MasterChef is one of many reality series currently on television as part of celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay’s culinary growing empire. On this particular series, he and two other judges welcome everyday home cooks and invite them to show off their signature dishes and skills. Those who are chosen compete in different challenges and one is eventually crowned winner.
The contestants come from all walks of life, some of whom work in kitchens but most are just passionate home cooks with regular 9-5 jobs. They test their skills, work to improve, learn to work with others and add adventure into their cooking. There have been 10 seasons and 10 winners thus far. How do they all rank? Who’s the best of the best and who earned Gordon’s respect the most? Without further delay, here are all 10 winners of MasterChef, ranked.
10 Jennifer Behm (Season 2)
Winning season two, this realtor by trade quickly showed that she had a knack for cooking. While one might tell others not to quit their day job, with her, it would be a logical suggestion. Her final dish of scallops, quail, and poached pear had the judges salivating and naming her winner.
So where is she now? Well, she has her own restaurant and a catering company and she even appeared in the latest season with other past winners. As guests, they came to try out the new contestants’ food in one of the challenges.
9 Whitney Miller (Season 1)
Miller won while she was a student still in college – she hadn’t even begun a career yet! But her natural abilities as a cook impressed the judges, catapulting her to becoming the very first winner of the show.
Since her win, she completed her degree, released a cookbook focusing on her hometown southern comfort food, has appeared on television, and has done some consulting work. She also works as a food stylist. While she definitely earned her win, there have been so many more compelling winners since her season.
8 Courtney Lapresi (Season 5)
She butted heads with a lot of other contestants and dressed like she was going for a night out on the town while cooking, with high heels and full makeup. And yet, this dancer wasn’t fazed by people judging her by her appearance.
Courtney showed that she had the talent to back up being there, impressing the judges week after week with her consistently delicious dishes. She won the fifth season and went on to release a cookbook. She has, however, switched careers and now works in sales.
7 Claudia Sandoval (Season 6)
Always sticking to her Mexican roots, Sandoval’s bold and spicy flavors were always a hit with the judges, and a match for her vibrant red hair. That’s why she won the sixth season and went on to release a cookbook of Mexican-inspired recipes.
She has also been a brand ambassador, launched her own catering businesses, hosting cooking classes, and even became a judge on MasterChef Latino. She has plans in the works to open her own bakery to venture into desserts in addition to savory dishes.
6 Dorian Hunter (Season 10)
The most recent winner, Hunter came in as a home cook who simply loved making food for her husband and kids after she got home from work. But it was her deep passion, intensity, and drive that got her the win. If she didn’t know how to do or make something, she didn’t let it get her down and she conquered every challenge with her head high. When it was something she knew how to make, boy, did she ever know how to make it! She was the ultimate underdog who proved that one should never be underestimated.
Hunter is set to train with restaurants owned by all three judges, is working on a cookbook, and plans to open her own restaurant sometime soon.
5 Gerron Hurt (Season 9)
A big teddy bear of a man, Hurt came across as someone who simply loved to cook basic everyday dishes; not someone with a killer palette. But after making it onto the show, he demonstrated his eagerness to learn and his desire to listen and improve.
He took every piece of advice he was given to heart and kept putting out better and better dishes every time. Finally, he won the ninth season. He returned as the subject of a challenge in the latest season when the teams had to cook for his wedding.
4 Luca Manfe (Season 4)
His Italian accent and insistence on always injecting his Italian flair into everything he did made Manfe an entertaining contestant to watch. Already working in the restaurant business as a manager, it was his cooking skills that really captivated the judges.
He won season four and, like other former winners, penned a cookbook before starting his own personal catering service. He also runs a food truck, does cooking classes, and is a brand ambassador.
3 Shaun O’Neale (Season 7)
He was a fan favorite from the get-go, a humble DJ from Las Vegas who always wore his signature baseball cap while cooking and had an arm full of tattoos. But O’Neale cooked like he was a five-star chef, proving that he could make just as sweet music with food as he could with spinning records.
Like the others, he released a cookbook and hosted a number of dining events and cooking classes. But he remains one of the most memorable winners and has returned to the show on a few occasions.
2 Dino Angelo Luciano (Season 8)
By far the most memorable contestant on the show ever, Luciano caught everyone off guard as a dancer with bleached blonde hair, a tattooed body, and a deep voice with a thick New York accent who called everyone “baby doll.” But despite being underestimated because of his appearance and quirky attitude, Luciano proved that he really could cook.
His squid ink pasta was one that truly impressed the judges and helped get him to a win in season eight. He has since hosted a number of dinners and pop-up dining experiences and worked as an executive chef at a restaurant in Phoenix.
1 Christine Ha (Season 3)
Ha remains the most impressive winner in the show’s history because of her incredible skills despite being different abled: Ha is blind yet still navigated her way around the kitchen as though she had 20/20 vision. She cooked dishes that most people wouldn’t even dream of being able to cook and was able to inject bold flavours and beautiful presentations into every dish.
After winning the third season of the show, Ha released a cookbook with Asian and American comfort food recipes. She offers private chef services and has her own restaurant in Houston. She is also a brand ambassador, food blogger, and works for a cooking show designed for those with visual impairments. Ha remains an inspiration to any home cook who doubts themselves and was awarded the Helen Keller Personal Achievement Award in 2014 to mark her many achievements.
