Gearbox Software shares the first full look at Claptrap in Eli Roth’s Borderlands as filming wraps on the adaptation of the hit game franchise. Co-written by Roth and Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin, the story will center on the infamous outlaw Lilith as she builds a team of unexpected allies to travel to her home planet of Pandora to find the daughter of the universe’s most powerful figure, Atlas. Cate Blanchett leads the ensemble cast, including Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Ariana Greenblatt, Jamie Lee Curtis, Florian Munteanu, Édgar Ramírez, and Haley Bennett.
The first-person shooter video game franchise began in 2009 and has been a hit across its three mainline installments, 2014’s Pre-Sequel, and Telltale’s spin-off title Tales from the Borderlands, amassing over $1 billion in net revenue. A film adaptation began in 2015 with Lionsgate teaming with Ari and Avi Arad to produce, though languished in development hell until Roth signed on to direct in early 2020. After beginning production in April, progress looks to have moved quickly for the project.
Just over two months after getting underway, the official Twitter account for the Borderlands film shared the first full look at Claptrap from the adaptation. The lovable wise-cracking robot also holds a film clapper revealing that production is officially wrapped on the project. Check out the new image below:
Claptrap really wanted to let you all know he made it down the stairs safely. That, and the production of #BorderlandsMovie has officially wrapped! See you at the theaters in 20 💣 💣 pic.twitter.com/69NFljVjDc
After spending five years in development hell, it’s been exciting for those who have been eager to see the world of Borderlands come to life on screen to see how fast production has moved on the film. Roth and the studios have also done an effective job of building anticipation with the silhouetted photos of the cast from the set of the film. Still, with all of the characters to possibly show in full for the production wrap announcement, it’s a nice touch to see Claptrap bringing the news. Even more impressive is to see the extent of detail put into the live-action design of the robot, adding a few unique touches to the mix while also remaining wholly faithful to the source material.
It is also interesting to note that the chair Claptrap is situated in is not his own but rather for someone named “Randy,” likely referring to Randy Pitchford, the controversial co-founder of Gearbox and co-writer of the Borderlands franchise. With Pitchford serving as executive producer on the project, this shouldn’t come as much of a surprise but should also assure a sense of authenticity for Roth’s film. Now that production has concluded, a release date announcement is hopefully right around the corner for the film adaptation.
