Daniel Craig’s stint in the role of James Bond has come to an explosive, emotionally charged, and hugely satisfying conclusion with the release of No Time to Die. Director Cary Joji Fukunaga took the surprising segue into serialized storytelling from Spectre and ran with it. Just as Casino Royale gave Craig’s Bond an intriguing origin story, No Time to Die gave him a grand finale.
If Eon sticks with the serialized narrative established in Spectre and carried into No Time to Die, then that narrative has some exciting places to go in the future. As much as No Time to Die was conceived as a conclusive ending for Craig’s 007, it has a few setups that could lead into the next chapter of this franchise.
7 Daniel Craig’s Bond Replacement
Despite the finality of No Time to Die and the definitiveness of Craig’s take on Bond, the movie’s end credits bear the usual promise, “James Bond will return.” The next incarnation of 007 might have a similarly dark tone to the Craig era, or they might want to shake it up with a more lighthearted take like the wacky slapstick approach of the Roger Moore movies.
According to Deadline, producer Barbara Broccoli has said that she won’t even think about who Craig’s successor will be until next year, but another actor will eventually play the role of James Bond. Popular fan castings include Tom Hardy, Idris Elba, and Bridgerton’s Regé-Jean Page.
6 A Paloma Spin-Off
Since Ana de Armas is one of the biggest movie stars in the world right now and she starred alongside Craig in Rian Johnson’s murder mystery gem Knives Out, Bond fans expected her to have a bigger role in No Time to Die. Her CIA character Paloma only appears in one sequence when Bond travels to Cuba to infiltrate Blofeld’s birthday party, but de Armas made a huge impression with the character.
Paloma is hilariously reckless and thinks on her toes to come up with plans like driving a car into scaffolding to apprehend a scientist who’s trying to climb that scaffolding. This character is worthy of her own spin-off movie, or even a series of them.
5 The Darker Side Of MI6
A couple of Bond stories have concerned the darker side of MI6. In GoldenEye, Bond’s friend and fellow operative 006 is presumed dead and later revealed to be the mastermind behind the villainous scheme. In No Time to Die, M is revealed to be responsible for the Heracles virus. He wanted to prevent collateral damage for MI6 agents, but just ended up putting a bioweapon in the hands of a megalomaniacal genius with a “god complex.”
After No Time to Die turned Ralph Fiennes’ M into an antihero with the revelation that he created the thing that the villain uses to threaten the entire globe, it begs the question: what other dark secrets is M hiding?
4 Mathilde Grows Up To Become A Spy
When Bond reconnects with Madeleine and she introduces him to her five-year-old daughter Mathilde, she’s quick to tell him that she’s not his child. But, as it turns out, she is his daughter. It’s possible that Madeleine wanted to protect Mathilde, because Bond rejected her as soon as he suspected she’d betrayed him when she actually hadn’t. After Bond opens up emotionally, Madeleine feels comfortable revealing that Mathilde is his kid.
In the final scene of No Time to Die, Madeleine is seen driving Bond’s car with Mathilde in the passenger seat, ready to tell her the story of her father, James Bond. This could lead to Mathilde growing up and becoming a spy herself.
3 The Fallout Of Spectre
No Time to Die closed out Craig’s Bond tenure with the world saved from certain doom and Spectre in ruins. Safin eliminated Spectre by releasing the Heracles virus at Blofeld’s birthday bash, and then Bond saved the world from Safin himself.
One of the remaining few Spectre operatives or one of their relatives infected with Heracles could rise up and start a new criminal organization to rival the old one. If the Bond franchise continues on from No Time to Die, then MI6 is living in a post-Spectre world, waiting for a new shady enterprise to take its place.
2 Mourning James Bond
No Time to Die did something that no Bond movie has ever done before: kill off Bond. The character who has famously escaped certain death dozens of times found himself in a situation he couldn’t make it out of, infected with a deadly virus and stranded on an island with a nuclear strike headed its way. At the end of No Time to Die, after Bond has been decimated by nukes, his inner circle toasts him with a drink.
If the next movie in the franchise follows on from No Time to Die’s ending, then mourning Bond’s death will be a big part of it. A drink in his honor was a nice start, but a legend of his stature isn’t forgotten about easily.
1 Continuing Nomi’s Adventures As The New 007
Lashana Lynch is the clear breakout star of No Time to Die. After Bond retires from MI6, her character Nomi is given his 007 designation. Lynch doesn’t try to play Nomi as a replacement for Bond; she just plays her as her own kind of quippy, cool-as-ice action hero with grace under fire.
Nomi made a fun mismatched sidekick for Craig’s Bond in No Time to Die, but Lynch’s performance is strong enough to anchor its own movie. The search for a new 007 might not begin until next year, but the producers have already cast an awesome new 007.
