10 Actors Best-Suited To Play Video Game Characters

Video game-based movies are entering a new renaissance, and here are 10 actors best suited to portray some of gaming’s greatest icons.

With the release of films like Detective Pikachu, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Mortal Kombat, video game movies are slowly starting to pull themselves out of the dark ages and into a new era. With vast improvements in effects, casting, and writing choices, the gaming world could potentially see a new age of movies wholly removed from the failures of previous decades.

Of course, every film needs some top-tier talent to portray its leads, and, while many classic video game characters are created through computer graphics, there are more than enough performers in Hollywood that are just absolutely made to play these iconic roles.

10 Helena Bonham Carter (Hornet)

If Tim Burton hasn’t already gotten the idea to create a Hollow Knight film adaptation, he really should. The game practically fits many hallmarks of Burton’s typical aesthetic, and his gift for stop-motion animation would make this creepy-crawly adventure something unique. But, since the Knight played by the player is a silent role, the movie might benefit from a change in perspective, preferably Hornet.

Hornet is a character frequently encountered along the quest, and, since she’s worked with Burton before, Helena Bonham Carter is the ideal choice for the stinging, needle-wielding warrior. The role would have to be expanded, but Carter’s performance would no doubt give it a touch of power and grace as the two explore the lands of Hallownest.

9 Kurt Russel (Solid Snake)

According to Polygon, Snake from the Metal Gear series was inspired by Snake Plissken from Escape From New York, it only seems fitting that Kurt Russel should be given the chance to play the Big Boss on the big screen.

An older Snake does appear in the video game series, namely the fourth entry, and it is entirely plausible for Russel to portray the character that already bears a strong resemblance to the actor. With the right script, direction, and conditions, it could be a major success.

8 Nicholas Cage (Jacket)

No matter who they get to portray the masked maniac in the Hotline Miami adaptation, Quinten Tarantino needs to direct. The game is a violent and gory affair that already comes with a Pulp Fiction vibe, and there’s only one actor that could fit into the protagonist’s jacket, Nicholas Cage.

Cage is a wildcard that would be absolutely ideal for this strange and psychedelic setting. Given his experience in movies like Mandy and Willy’s Wonderland, Cage would fit into a Hotline Miami movie like a round peg and a round hole.

7 Liam Neeson (Shovel Knight)

A movie inspired by Shovel Knight would absolutely have to be animated, a delightful comedy poking fun at archetypes of both fantasy and retrogaming practically demands it. But, while the other cast members could easily be comedians and character actors, Shovel Knight himself needs a serious performer to deliver his lines in a noble authoritative tone.

Sean Bean and Ewan McGregor would also be excellent choices, but Liam Neeson’s gravelly voice is perfect for a seasoned warrior like Shovel Knight. At the heart of it, he’s a noble knight on a perilous quest, so the man portraying him requires a classically-trained performer who can take things as seriously as possible.

6 Thomas Brodie-Sangster (Link)

A live-action film inspired by The Legend of Zelda has been desired by fans of the adventure series for decades, and a Netflix series is little more than a pipe dream—but, that doesn’t mean the potential still isn’t there. Since no quest in the lands of Zelda’s Hyrule can begin without its champion, casting Link is one of the key decisions in adapting the game.

Known mainly for his work in things like Game Of Thrones, Thomas Brodie-Sangster is one of the dozens of actors who would make a magnificent Link. With his experience and imp-like features, the actor already has a few advantages. He’d be a solid casting choice for Hyrule’s hero if there ever was one.

5 Jason Momoa (Kratos)

There are dozens of action actors that would make a great Kratos, but playing the Ghost of Sparta requires more than a muscular form and a deep commanding voice, and the fact that Jason Momoa has both is merely icing on the cake. Momoa has already proven he can play a god and a warrior with his work as Khal Drogo and Aquaman, but Kratos could be the best of both worlds for the prolific actor.

Kratos is a character of raw power, both physical and emotional. If Momoa could take the intensity of Khal Drogo and mix it with the mythic quality of Aquaman, Kratos would be a walk in the park for him.

4 Chris Hemsworth (Simon Belmont)

If someone were to make a true-to-form adaptation of the original Castlevania, the two most important roles would definitely be that of monster-slayer Simon Belmont and his nemesis Count Dracula. While there certainly is no shortage of capable Dracula actors, there’s only one action-movie mainstay that could give Simon the over-the-top flair he deserves.

With his work in Thor and Snow White and the Huntsman, Chris Hemsworth as the most famous member of the Belmont clan should be a no-brainer, especially if the filmmaker’s pull from the original Nintendo artwork. Having Tom Hiddleston as Dracula might also be a winning choice for a little extra fan service.

3 Gwendoline Christie (Samus Aran)

The realms of science-fiction are in no short supply of leading ladies, but Samus Aran has deserved a big-screen version for a long time. While there might be some that would fight tooth and nail for the crown, Gwendoline Christie should be at the front of the line.

Samus is a bounty hunter, so she needs to be cool, calculating, and ready for anything. If Christie applies the same methods she did with Captain Phasma from Star Wars, walking onscreen in full armor as Samus should practically be second nature to her—especially if, in true Metroid fashion, her identity is kept secret until the very end.

2 Orlando Bloom (The Dragonborn)

It might work better as a TV series, but a Skyrim movie would be a fantasy epic in every sense of the term. While there are plenty of actors and actresses who could step into the steel boots of the Dragonborn, a movie of this size and scale needs someone who has experience in the realms like Middle-Earth.

Due to his work in films like Troy, Kingdom of Heaven, and, most crucially, The Lord of the Rings, Orlando Bloom would be one of the top choices for a wielder of the voice. His mastery of swordplay and epic settings would certainly help his case in the long run.

1 Charles Martinet (Mario)

While a movie is already set to premiere in 2022, only one cast member has been announced, and Mario’s actor still hasn’t been revealed. While Hollywood might try to cast some big-name celebrity, comedian, or character actor to put on the overalls as everyone’s favorite plumber, Mario has already had a performer for decades.

At the end of the day, there’s only one actor who can truly do the character justice, Charles Martinet. Martinet has been the man behind Mario since the days of the N64, and he still hasn’t stopped. Hearing anyone else’s voice come out of that familiar character would be a bit too jarring.
