Unfortunately, josei anime consistently fly under the radar. Some titles like Chihayafuru and Princess Jellyfish have been hits with newer fans, but others have fallen by the wayside. There are very few titles adapted for the josei, or “adult woman,” demographic.

Unlike shojo, josei anime focus on more serious, realistic relationships and even the ups and downs of adulthood. Working a job, taking care of a family, even a messy divorce or break-up. The protagonists have experienced a whirlwind romance and now have to see the world for what it is. However, that doesn’t mean their stories are any less entertaining. Some can even be more wholesome than any shojo.

Hakuoki is a fantastic option for anyone looking for a history-based anime series, and Chizuru Yukimura is an equally unforgettable heroine.

After her father’s disappearance, she travels to search for him, disguising herself as a man to join the Shinsengumi. Yashiro “Shiro” Isana is a regular student until he’s accused of murder. The victim in question belongs to HOMRA, one of the infamous gangs to roam the city, and the culprit greatly resembles Shiro. The vengeful HOMRA members gradually hunt him down, and he’s more than willing to do anything to avoid them.

Unlike most mainstream anime, Honey and Clover involves a group of art college students enjoying their respective fields. Their professor’s cousin, Hagumi, enrolls in her first year, taking her classmates by surprise with her proficient art skills. Two of the main characters, Yuta and Shinobu, become smitten with Hagumi and find unique ways to show their love for her.

Animal lovers will love Polar Bear Café. This anime was quite popular when it aired in 2012, but it fell by the wayside after its ending. It’s a nice blend of punny comedy and slice-of-life relatability that adult fans will enjoy. It’s even better with a mostly-animal cast.

The lazy but naive Panda just got a part-time job at the local zoo, but his co-workers have a hard time getting him to actually work. 07-Ghost is an older title, but it’s got an outstanding balance of military-based action and fantasy elements. Not to mention, there are plenty of attractive and exciting characters for fans to ogle at. The story follows an amnesiac student, Teito Klein, who’s at the top of his class but disrespected by his classmates.

He soon uncovers a dark secret about his past, specifically the identity of his father’s killer. Teito attempts to avenge his late father but is promptly imprisoned for his actions. Mikage, Teito’s mysterious new friend, helps him escape, jumpstarting his journey to learn more about himself.
