10 Awesome Retro Games That Got Modern Overhauls

A true classic never goes out of style, or so the saying goes. So it’s easy to understand why movies, shows, and video games continue to get remade and remastered year after year. But there’s something special about doing more than just giving an old game a fresh coat of graphical paint. True dedication is rebuilding the title and keeping what fans loved and adored about it.

Successful retro games are beloved for a reason, there’s always some form or factor that keeps players coming back again and again. Fortunately for fans, there are plenty of remakes out there that gave these classic titles a complete and total overhaul.

10 Resident Evil

Compared to the original “Directors Cut” of the game on the PS1, the first chapter of the Resident Evil franchise looks nothing like it did when it first premiered. While the original remake on the Gamecube is the more well-known version, the HD remake for more recent consoles is also worth picking up.

Resident Evil: Remake, as it’s called, definitely applies a little more spit-and-polish for modern consoles, and even makes the experience more user-friendly to those new to the experience. Although it’s not a 100% overhaul, it’s still a completely different title from its original release.

9 Prince Of Persia

Prince of Persia Classic was an X-Box Live Arcade title that essentially took everything from the very first title in the series, but gave it an entirely modern makeover. Using graphics and designs from the then-most-recent Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, the game essentially got a complete do-over with all the bells and whistles.

It maintains the same core gameplay, escape the dungeon and defeat the vizier to rescue the princess all before time runs out, but it does away with the rotoscope-inspired graphics of the MS-DOS age. At its core, this is how to do a remake 101.

8 Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, but a new coat of paint every now and then does help keep things fresh. Case in point, Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap. This beautifully-made remake of the Sega classic platformer not only featured an option to play the original title as the developers intended, but also gave it a completely new graphical overhaul.

The 16-bit sprites were replaced with fully-animated, hand-drawn characters that made the game like something out of a Saturday morning cartoon. The attention to detail and love for this title is truly felt in this bouncy and colorful redesign.

7 Ghosts ‘N Goblins: Resurrection

10 Awesome Retro Games That Got Modern Overhauls

Anyone who has picked up the original Ghosts ‘n Goblins knows that it’s one of the hardest platformers out there, as well as being easily one of the most infuriatingly difficult games on the NES. Fortunately for new players, this revamped remake updates nearly everything seen in the original title, as well as giving new players an easier difficulty.

Not only did it get a graphic reconstruction, but controls and learning curve got some much-needed reconditioning. Veteran players still have the hardcore platforming experience to enjoy, but it’s always beneficial to expand a game’s audience.

6 Gauntlet

If it wasn’t for Gauntlet, gamers wouldn’t have Diablo, pure and simple. While the game got several sequels, including PS2 and Gamecube releases, a true remake wasn’t seen until 2014. Not only did it truly capture the vibe of the arcade classic, but it expanded and improved on an already solid formula.

The game is loaded with the usual mazes and monsters, but each of the four champions got major updates and upgrades to their appearances and abilities. While the top-down perspective seems too far away compared to other titles, it’s still the dungeon-crawler fans remember.

5 Pac-Man

10 Awesome Retro Games That Got Modern Overhauls

Pac-Man is one of the pillars of the gaming industry, and his career stretches as far back as 1980. Of course, the ghost-muncher has done much within Namco’s power to keep up with the times. There are dozens and dozens of games, spinoffs, and other titles in his series, but none perfectly captures the arcadey atmosphere of the original title than Pac-Man: Championship Edition.

On the surface, it might appear to be just a suped-up Pac-Man title with dozens of trimmings and trappings to make the game more interesting. However, it is one of the few games in the extensive series that perfectly replicates the hypnotic nature of the original title. If it wasn’t for the graphics, this could have been an ’80s gaming classic.

4 Final Fantasy VII

10 Awesome Retro Games That Got Modern Overhauls

Final Fantasy VII was considered one of the best JRPGs, so it was only a matter of time before Final Fantasy VII got the HD-Remake treatment. Needless to say, the results were incredibly astounding. The remake featuring Cloud Strife and his party of freedom fighters truly stepped out of the ’90s and into the modern era.

Like so many on this list, this is an honest-to-goodness remake that reconstructed a familiar game from the ground up, and the work shows. Not only are the graphics insanely enhanced, but the gameplay, character models, and overall experience have been given a completely new life all their own.

3 Doom

10 Awesome Retro Games That Got Modern Overhauls

In no uncertain terms, when it comes to remaking retro video games, Bethesda understood the assignment. There’s not an element in the original FPS that didn’t get a major upgrade in the remake. Nearly every element was taken out, improved, and made to serve as the foundation of the 2016 reimagining.

The game even pokes fun at modern shooters in its reliance on combat and exploration rather than the story-telling avenue many modern alternatives have adopted. It’s still Doom, but with a whole lot more than Cacodeamons in store.

2 Sonic Mania

10 Awesome Retro Games That Got Modern Overhauls

Though not technically a remake per se, Sonic Mania deserves an honorable mention simply because it does rely on remade and reimagined levels from the best of the blue hedgehog’s career. Sonic has had tons of different games, but his return to the 2D, 16-bit medium was a stroke of genius.

The title represents how Sonic games are meant to be played. And since it not only keeps what made the classic titles great but improves on the formula, graphics, and gameplay as well, it earns a spot on the list.

1 Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening

Like Sonic, Link has also seen a return back to his roots with this top-down adventure. Ditching the 16-bit graphics for a more adorable toy-like appearance, the game was a brilliant throwback for longtime Zelda junkies to enjoy. A classic at its core full of Hyrulean dungeons and temples, but with a few bits and bobs thrown in for good measure.

The creative choices made in this remake enhance and definitely don’t take away. Don’t let the appearance mislead, it’s still the trippy and strange dreamlike narrative seen in the Gameboy version. All the more reason to experience it through a new set of eyes.
