10 Best Alternative Versions Of Thor (Including Throg)

Spoiler Warning for Disney+’s Loki

Disney+’s Loki was packed with Easter eggs and one of the best was Throg, a frog version of Thor, who appeared in episode five of the series. Loki has many variants in the comics and MCU, but Thor has just as many alternate versions in Marvel Comics, including Jane Foster, who will be coming to the screen very shortly.

With nearly 60 years of comic book history under his belt, Thor has had a number of variants. Some exist in main Marvel continuity and others in alternate timelines and realities. Thor is also a title, one that is held by those worthy of the power of Mjolnir, and Odinson isn’t the only one who has shown his worth.

10 Throg

Throg appeared briefly in The Void in episode five, trapped in a jar labeled T365. This is a reference to Thor #365, the issue where the character made his first full appearance. Loki turned Thor into a frog, one of his many cruel tricks, in one of the comic book storylines that inspired Loki.

This isn’t the only version of Throg in the comics, though. Another version, Simon Walterson, debuted in Lockjaw and the Pet Avengers #1 in 2009, which featured animal versions of the Avengers roster.

9 Thunderstrike

Thunderstrike is a version of Thor from the early ’90s. He’s Eric Masterson, who takes over the role first as Thor and then later adopts his own identity, Thunderstrike. Masterson was actually merged with Thor in the comics but later split off from him.

He shared all of Thor’s abilities and later as Thunderstrike, used an enchanted mace (where he got his name from). It was commonplace in the early 90s for Marvel and DC to swap out their big stars with new versions, as witnessed in the classic but controversial Death of Superman event.

8 Ragnarok

Ragnarok was a clone of Thor who Iron Man made for the express purpose of fighting the other Avengers. It was a low moment among many for Tony Stark and his side in the Civil War comic book event that inspired that MCU movie of the same title.

He has most of Thor’s powers, but his hammer isn’t mystical like Mjolnir. Still, it’s a serious weapon, made of both vibranium and adamantium. Ragnarok debuted in Civil War #3, co-created by writer Mark Millar and artist Steve McNiven.

7 Thor 2099

10 Best Alternative Versions Of Thor (Including Throg)

The future of 2099 is one of Marvel Comics’ darkest timelines. In this future, the world is largely ruled by corporations and superheroes are few and far between. Thor 2099 is Cecil McAdams, who is actually a priest in a religion devoted to the original Thor from a century before.

He becomes Thor not by being worthy of Mjolnir, but by being deceived by the CEO of the Alchemax Corporation that he is a Norse god. Alchemax also grants McAdams his powers, which mirror the original Thor’s in large measure.

6 Thor-El

10 Best Alternative Versions Of Thor (Including Throg)

Thor-El is likely the most powerful version of Thor in all of comic book history because he’s a fusion of Thor and Superman. He emerged in the Unlimited Access crossover between Marvel and DC back in the late 1990s. The storyline featured many of the companies’ top heroes and villains fusing with their respective counterparts.

At the time, Superman was in his blue energy form, lending Thor-El his distinct blue look. The crossover was part of a series of such events between Marvel and DC in the ’90s, beginning with Amalgam Comics.

5 Iron Hammer

10 Best Alternative Versions Of Thor (Including Throg)

Iron Hammer is a variant of Thor who is a fusion of Thor and Iron Man. He appeared in the Infinity Wars storyline from 2018, in which Gamora uses the Infinity Stones to fold space and time. This leads to countless characters being jammed together like Iron Hammer.

Sigurd Stark was aided by an A.I. assistant H.E.I.M.D.A.L.L. and fought against the Dark Elves who captured and tried to kill him. Like his mystical hammer, his armor was enchanted, making him truly powerful.

4 Ultimate Thor

10 Best Alternative Versions Of Thor (Including Throg)

Ultimate Thor is initially distrusted and written off as insane by his teammates on the Ultimates, but he eventually proves himself as the God Of Thunder. His powers are very similar to the Thor of the main Marvel continuity in Earth-616 but derive in some measure from a mystical belt he wears.

Early on, he wields an ax that foreshadows Stormbreaker in Earth-616 and in the MCU. He later uses the regular Mjolnir and generally becomes more like his original comic book counterpart as time goes on.

3 Storm

10 Best Alternative Versions Of Thor (Including Throg)

Storm is an Omega-Level mutant and one of the most powerful mutants alive. She became even more powerful when she proved she was worthy of lifting Mjolnir. She first gained these powers in X-Men Annual #9 in 1985, when Loki presented Storm the Stormcaster hammer, a version of Mjolnir.

She relinquished the hammer but would later lift it again many years later. Versions of Storm in other realities have also had the power of Thor, most notably in Earth-904, which was introduced in What If..? #12 from 1990. In this issue, Storm fights another version of Throg.

2 King Thor

10 Best Alternative Versions Of Thor (Including Throg)

An older version of Loki appeared in the MCU series, played by Richard E. Grant. An older King Thor fought him in the comics in a dark alternate future. King Thor assumed the throne of Asgard after the death of his father and the murder of many Marvel gods, all slain by Gorr The God Butcher.

Other versions of King Thor exist in the comics, including a tyrannical one who is ultimately deposed by his son and the comic version of Lady Sif in a storyline from the early 2000s

1 Jane Foster

Jane Foster become of the best and most intriguing versions of Thor in main continuity when Thor was deemed unworthy of Mjolnir. Though it was a mystery to comic fans at first, it was later revealed that the cancer-stricken Jane Foster proved worthy of the hammer.

She escaped the pain of cancer while using the hammer, but continued use of such power actually advanced the cancer by purging all toxins from her body including her chemotherapy. She sacrificed her life fighting as Thor but was resurrected by Odin.
