10 Peter Pan (1953) – Disney+

Peter Pan features Bobby Driscoll and Kathryn Beaumont as Peter Pan, a boy who never grows up, and 12-year-old girl Wendy Darling. After being spirited away from their home by the supernatural Peter Pan, Wendy and her siblings join him in his attempts to defeat his rival, the notorious pirate Captain Hook.

Based on a 1904 play by J.M. Barrie, the film adaptation brings gorgeous visuals and catchy tunes to this classic tale. My Neighbor Totoro features Dakota and Elle Fanning in the English version of the Japanese original as sisters Satsuki and Mei Kusakabe. After befriending a roaring, mystical being called “Totoro”, the pair embark on a magical adventure, encountering all manner of fantastical creatures.

Finding Dory features Ellen DeGeneres and Albert Brooks as the regal blue tang, Dory, and clownfish, Marlin. While struggling with short-term memory loss, Dory enlists the help of Marlin and the rest of her friends to find her parents.

A spin-off sequel to the 2003 film Finding Nemo, this movie more than lives up to the high standard set by the original. 7 Despicable Me (2010) – iTunes

Despicable Me features Steve Carell and Jason Segel as rival supervillains Gru and Vector. After adopting three orphan girls to enact an evil plot, Gru eventually grows to love them as his children battling his archrival.

This hilarious film turns the prototypical kid’s movie formula on its head, focusing on a villain rather than a hero, and Carell perfectly plays his role of villain-turned-beleaguered-single-dad. There likely weren’t many viewers who didn’t sympathize with Gru’s plight when he was rejected for a bank loan, even if it was from the “Bank of Evil”.

6 Howl’s Moving Castle (1994) – Netflix

Howl’s Moving Castle features Emily Mortimer and Christian Bale in the English version of the Japanese original as an 18-year-0ld girl named Sophie Hatter and a magician named Howl. The malicious Witch of the Waste casts a curse upon Sophie and turns her into an old woman, causing her to get caught up in a war after enlisting the help of Howl.

While Hayao Miyazaki has many acclaimed films to his credit, this complex, anti-war fantasy story just may be his magnum opus. The international hit was nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Film, and deftly balances nuanced messages about liberty, identity, conflict, and more.

5 The Lion King (2001) – Disney+

The Lion King features Matthew Broderick and Jeremy Irons as a lion prince named Simba and his uncle Scar. After Scar murders and usurps Simba’s father to become the king of the Pride Lands, Simba returns from exile to expose and challenge the unlawfully crowned king.

This classic animated musical boasts the combined talents of legends of their crafts such as lyricist Tim Rice, singer Elton John, and composer Hans Zimmer. These ingredients, along with a gripping plot, well-rounded characters, and one of the best movie villains of all time, added up to one of the most beloved animated films ever.

4 One Hundred And One Dalmations (1961) – Disney+

One Hundred and One Dalmations features Rod Taylor and Betty Lou Gerson as a dalmatian named Pongo and fur enthusiast Cruella de Vil. After being rebuked in her offer to purchase Pongo and his litter, the terrible de Vil steals the puppies, who then must make their way back home with the help of many animal friends.

While most animated kids movies have “heart”, few are as overflowing with love as this silver screen adaptation of Dodie Smith’s 1956 novel. From the couple who own the dogs to the dog couple who care for the litter, to the countless friends they make along the way, the whole movie is one great love fest. Perhaps that’s why it’s so beloved by cinephiles, even 60 years after its release.

3 Lady And The Tramp (1955) – Disney+

Lady and the Tramp features Barbara Luddy and Larry Roberts as an American Cocker Spaniel named Lady and a mixed Terrier named Tramp. After being separated from her upscale owners, Lady meets the scruffily affable Tramp, who helps her return home.

This old-fashioned romance tale of the upper-class lady and the lower-class man is likely the first foray into the narrative archetype for many young viewers, and seeing the adorable relationship among the lead duo evolve throughout the film is a joy. Though Lady and the Tramp has some qualities that haven’t aged well, it retains some real charm and sweetness.

2 The Polar Express (2004) – Prime Video

The Polar Express features Daryl Sabara and Tom Hanks as Hero Boy and Conductor. After being invited aboard a train heading for the North Pole on Christmas Eve, the young boy joins the mysterious train conductor and a group of other children on their way to see Santa Claus.

Though some criticized the film for falling into the uncanny valley with regards to their near-perfect animations of human characters, it serves to underscore the unsettling, mystical quality that pervades the movie. While most Christmas movies have messages about keeping maintaining a childlike faith in things like Santa Claus, few have done so as memorably as this Robert Zemeckis masterpiece.

1 Toy Story (1995) – Disney+

Toy Story features Tim Allen and Tom Hanks as pull-string cowboy doll Sheriff Woody Pride and astronaut action figure Buzz Lightyear. Though the pair initially compete for the attention of their owner, a child named Andy, they eventually put aside their differences when left behind on a family outing.

As the first feature-length CGI-animated film, Toy Story has gone on to become one of Disney’s most recognizable franchises. While most animated children’s movies are complimented with the caveat that their quality is relative to their genre, no such qualifications are required for this generational favorite. Not only is it the best animated movie of all time, but it’s also the most rewatchable movie of all time.
