The very popular, mysterious, vampire savvy CW series The Vampire Diaries has been off the air since 2017, but the show still has a very strong fan base and is the perfect show to binge-watch over and over again. When the series first premiered in September of 2009 many believed that it would be a lot like the Twilight movie series since it was released around the same time, but it could not be more different! The show follows two vampire brothers that just happen to fall in love with the same teenage girl who strangely looks a lot like their past love from the 1800s and the storyline has a ton of different twists and turns throughout.

After following the show for some time, you get obsessed and feel like you have a possible connection to the characters and actors, so seeing those awesome behind the scenes photos of the cast and crew can really make you feel nostalgic and show you why you started loving the show in the first place. 10 A Sweet Throwback From The ‘Pilot’ Episode

It is crazy to think that the first episode of the series was released in 2009 and seeing just how young Nina Dobrev looks in this photo can really prove how long ago that really was. Not only was the “Pilot” episode, but it was also the start of a huge new television series. According to Wikipedia, when the episode aired it received over 5 million viewers within just the first thirty minutes!

9 The Salvatore Brothers

Throughout the series, it is shown many times that brothers Stefan and Damon do not get along very well, but that couldn’t be more false in real life between the two actors. Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley have been great friends since the very beginning of filming the series and they have a much better relationship in real life than they do on screen. In many of the behind the scenes photos, it’s easy to spot the two goofing off in the background.

8 A Classic Hair & Makeup Photo

After following a show for a long time, getting to see the stars behind the scenes photos of them getting their everyday hair and makeup done can be a really interesting thing. In this photo, we see Nina Dobrev alongside Matt Davis getting prepped for filming an episode during 2017.

7 The Girls Rockin’ 50s Costumes

In season one’s episode titled “Unpleasantville,” the characters get all dolled up for their high school dance which has a 1950’s theme. This episode is definitely the one with the best costumes and the cutest behind the scenes photos! In this picture, we see actresses Nina Dobrev, Candice Accola, and Kat Graham wearing their best clothes that look to be pulled straight out of the ’50s!

6 The Real Salvatore Mansion

Though the real-life Salvatore Mansion located in Atlanta, GA got torn down in 2015 due to steep payments and upkeep- that didn’t stop the cast and crew of The Vampire Diaries from keeping some of it in a few of the last season’s episodes. In this behind the scenes photo, we see Tyler Lockwood, played by Michael Trevino, along with writer Kevin Williamson. Surprisingly, what the two are standing in front of isn’t just a black screen and trees but it is actually the front of the Salvatore house!

5 Ian’s Vampire Makeup Touch-Up

One of the things that The Vampire Diaries is most known for is their crazy vampire eye makeup, but it turns out that in order for the creators to achieve that wicked veiny vampire eye look, they have to use digital effects. That easily explains why there are so many black dots all over Ian Somerhalder’s face!

Guest star Malese Jow shared with MTV in 2010 that she thought the makeup crew would be drawing on the red eyes and little veins, but it turns out that it’s actually just the little black dots above and below your eyes and they CGI everything else.

4 Bonnie & Caroline Goofing Off In “Unpleasantville”

Although the episode’s title in season one does sound pretty unpleasant, this behind the scenes photo definitely tells a different story. It is so easy to see how much fun the cast really has with each other by just simply seeing their reactions and how they interact with one another! Here we see Candice Accola, who plays Caroline Forbes, along with Kat Graham, aka Bonnie Bennett, enjoying themselves in between scenes.

3 An Old School Katherine & Damon

It is very well known among fans of the show that Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev had a previous 3-year relationship during the earlier seasons and ended up splitting due to all of the rumors and controversy that they were receiving from tabloids. Although the two are no longer together, they did take some awesome photos together while in costume on the set during the first season. In this photo, Nina is in her best vampire Katherine get-up and Ian is channeling his best Damon straight out of the 1920s.

2 Nina & Candice In-Between Takes For “Friday Night Bites”

“Friday Night Bites” is definitely a big fan-favorite episode for its massive plot twists and for the fact that it is really where the main storyline began for the first season. In the episode, Stefan joins the football team and Elena shows up to support him all while Caroline, who is at the time being used by Damon, is one of the head cheerleaders.

Not only is this behind the scenes photo very cute, but it also shows a ton of nostalgia for the first season of the series!

1 “It’s A Wrap!” Cake

On the cast and crew’s last day of filming, they threw a wrap party and were gifted a fully customized cake with everything including tiny figurines of the cast, the famous Mystic Grill restaurant, the building, and, of course, the Camaro. This cake looks like it was taken straight out of the show and was perfectly done. Sadly, there weren’t many more behind the scenes photos from the wrap party but this cake definitely makes up for it!
