Despite having a large cast of esteemed, well-known actors, reviews for The Big Wedding were primarily negative, with a 5.6 rating on IMDb. Nevertheless, Barnes put on a great performance as the son and newly-wed-to-be stuck in the middle of uninhibited family drama.

9 Jackie & Ryan – 5.9

In the romantic drama Jackie & Ryan, Barnes stars opposite Katherine Heigl, and they both play musicians that are struggling in the current stages of their life. Heigl’s character Jackie is a single mom who’s attempting to gain full custody of her daughter, and Barnes’ character Ryan is a wayward train hopper who wants to make it in the music industry. Barnes reprised his role of Caspian, who has become more mature and grown as the King of Narnia in their absence. Together, they all set sail on a treacherous journey to rescue seven lords.

5 Killing Bono – 6.4

Inspired by a true story, Killing Bono follows the fame adjacent-band led by Neil McCormick (played by Barnes) and his brother Ivan, the friends and former classmates of Bono who becomes the lead singer for the band U2. Along with his younger brother, Neil has a front row seat to the international fame and fortune that U2, and Bono especially, achieve. As the film goes on, Neil lusts after the same acclaim, which consequently leads to his downfall as an artist and harms his personal relationships.

In The Words, Clay wrote a novel about a struggling author, Rory, who suspiciously has a lot in common with Clay. After many unsuccessful attempts to publish his own books, Rory discovers an old, eloquently written manuscript that he claims as his own, making him extremely successful. Rory’s life is on a major upswing until an old man approaches him and shares his backstory, revealing that he was the one who penned and lived the story. This impacts Rory’s path forward, and in turn, the author Clay’s, as he attempts to justify the novel’s ending.

In one of his greatest film roles thus far, Barnes played the younger version of the old man in flashbacks. His performance beautifully captures the many profound emotions — love, loss, and regret — that his character experienced. The old man’s backstory propelled the plot forward and was a compelling part of this embedded narrative. The Words received a 7.0 rating on IMDb, with Barnes succeeding in tugging on the audience’s heartstrings.

1 Stardust – 7.6

Director Matthew Vaughn’s film Stardust, adapted from Neil Gaiman’s book of the same name, tells a tale about Tristan Thorn— played by Charlie Cox pre-Daredevil fame — who embarks on a quest to retrieve a fallen star in hopes of earning Victoria’s hand in marriage. Much to Tristan’s surprise, the star is actually a woman named Yvaine, and they fall in love as they protect each other from those who seek to harm them.

Barnes briefly played young Dunstan, Tristan’s father, who met and spent the night with a captive princess. Stardust received a 7.6 rating on IMDb, and while Barnes played a smaller role in this film, the remainder of the story wouldn’t be possible without his character’s choices as a young man.
