10 How The Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) 6.2

Karloff might have originated the role of the Grinch in the original Christmas movie, but Carrey’s spin on the character became an instant classic. And while it’s not as timeless as the original, the live-action adaptation of Dr. Seuss’s Christmas tale has more than a bit of a fanbase.

Frank Cross is the stand-in for Scrooge in this contemporary adaptation, and his ghostly encounters are a bit more aggressive than specters wearing heavy chains. Brutal slapstick and mean-spirited humor is the name of the game in this film, but at least there’s a musical number and a happy ending to tie it up in a Christmassy bow.
