Disney movies are known for their fun and lovable characters both their human characters and their animal characters especially in their iconic animated movies from the 1990s and ones that were released just within the last few years.

Most Disney animated movies have Disney princesses and they have animal sidekicks who help them along the way. From Jasmine and Rajah to Rapunzel and Pascal, there are a number of great Disney animal sidekicks throughout the years.

10 Zazu

Zazu is a bit of a pest as a sidekick in The Lion King as the young Nala and Simba are annoyed by his presence, but overall he’s a loyal sidekick to them and Mufasa.

Although Zazu is a worrier, he’s usually right in his worries and only wants to help keep everyone he loves safe and no one can fault him for that. He tries his best to protect everyone and that makes him a good animal sidekick.

9 Sebastian

Sebastian the crab is a great Disney sidekick to Ariel in The Little Mermaid and is very similar to Zazu as he’s the assistant to King Triton and he helps to protect the underwater kingdom. Sebastian has more of a laid-back attitude unless he has to spring into action to help save someone.

Sebastian is a loyal sidekick and sings some of the best songs in the movie including “Kiss the Girl” and “Under the Sea” that make him even more iconic.

8 Rajah

Both Rajah and Abu from Aladdin are great animal sidekicks to both Jasmine and Aladdin respectively, and anyone would be happy to have either the tiger or the monkey by their side.

Rajah is Jasmine’s incredibly loyal best friend and also a body guard who always protects the Disney princess. It would be undeniably nice to have a tiger as a best friend and have constant protection whenever danger appeared.

7 Sven

Sven is a loyal reindeer and best friend sidekick to Kristoff in Frozen. Kristoff and Sven have been friends since they were young and it’s clear that Kristoff feels his most comfortable when it’s just him and Sven.

Sven is a competent and smart sidekick who is always there for Kristoff and quickly supports Anna when they first meet her. Sven was there for Kristoff when no one else was and is a great friend to anyone he meets.

6 Abu

Abu is another lovable animal sidekick from Aladdin who is constantly by Aladdin’s side whether he’s a pauper or a prince. Abu is always there for Aladdin through thick and thin and is willing to lend a helping hand.

Aladdin shows more of Abu than Rajah making Abu a bit more accessible as a character to the audience and although Abu has some bad traits like being a bit selfish and greedy at times, at his core Abu is a generous and loyal companion.

5 Pegasus

Pegasus has been Hercules’ animal sidekick since his father Zeus created the winged horse to be his companion when he was born. Pegasus follows Hercules closely and is always there to help Hercules whether he needs to get somewhere quickly or backup in a battle or just a friend to talk to.

Pegasus is a powerful creature yet he’s endearingly quirky and friendly to almost everyone unless they pose a threat to his best friend Hercules.

4 Pua And HeiHei

It’s difficult to choose the best animal side kick to Moana as Pua is one of the most adorable Disney animated animals, but HeiHei is the one who ends up joining Moana on her journey and they’re both fun sidekicks in the movie.

Pua seems to be the more helpful companion but is left on the island when Moana leaves, and she finds that HeiHei has snuck onto her boat. HeiHei is almost more trouble than he’s worth as the chicken constantly falls overboard, but in the end he’s a fun sidekick and presence on Moana’s journey.

3 Stitch

Stitch is a complicated character and has a difficult time adjusting to his new domestic life on earth even after he meets new best friend Lilo. Stitch is a difficult companion at first as he doesn’t understand how to be a friend, but Lilo stays by him and supports him until he does get it.

Once Stitch falls for Lilo and her older sister Nani, he becomes one of the most loyal sidekicks and would do anything for them. Stitch is a fun and chaotic presence and a great sidekick to Lilo.

2 Pascal

Disney’s Tangled re-tells the fairy tale story of Rapunzel stuck in her tower with her unbelievably long hair and introduces a chameleon named Pascal as her animal sidekick.

Although Pascal doesn’t talk, he has a lot of personality just in his facial features, when he chooses to use his camouflage, and how he’s always on Rapunzel’s shoulder whether she needs emotional support or help taking down a foe. Most everyone would love a little Pascal on their shoulder.

1 Mushu

Disney’s Mulan is iconic, and Mushu is arguably the most popular and lovable Disney movie sidekick. Mushu helps Mulan as she joins the Chinese military in her father’s place, and although he’s not the most reliable or smooth sidekick, Mulan certainly appreciates his help.

Mushu is as lovable as any other Disney animal sidekick and scrambles to help keep Mulan’s secret and help keep her alive during training and when fighting the Hun armies. Mushu is also a hilarious companion who has nothing but love and support for Mulan.
