10 Best Doctor Who Monsters

Since its return in 2005, Doctor Who has featured a huge range of new and classic aliens and monsters. But which of these creatures are the best?

Since it returned in 2005, Doctor Who has featured a plethora of horrifying monsters and aliens. Some of these monsters, such as the Daleks and Cybermen, have been brought back from the classic era of the show and introduced to a new generation of fans.

The new era of the show has also managed to create some of its own memorable monsters to join these such as the Weeping Angels and the Ood. Creepy and enthralling, fans have become just as enamored by these monsters as they are with the main protagonists of the show.

The Ood

The Ood debuted in season 2 of New Who and instantly became iconic Doctor Who monsters. They are an enslaved race used by humans in the far future and are most recognizable for their tentacle mouths.

In nature, the Ood are peaceful and benevolent, but they are highly susceptible to possession. In their first appearance, they are taken over by the Beast and use their communication devices in order to kill. While the Ood have only been the main focus of two stories, they have made various cameos over the years and have become an important and recognizable Doctor Who monster.

The Judoon

The Judoon first appeared back in season 3. They resemble humanoid rhinos and act as intergalactic law enforcement. These creatures aren’t exactly villainous, but their methods are usually unorthodox and they are ruthless in delivering punishment and eliminating obstacles.

The Judoon have become one of the most recurring monsters in the revived era of the show and even appear in spinoff The Sarah Jane Adventures. As the Judoon had a warrant out for the Doctor’s arrest in one of the best episodes of Doctor Who season 12, it’s likely that fans will see them again in the near future.

The Flood

The Flood is a viral species that infect people and use them as hosts in the Tenth Doctor story, “The Waters of Mars.” Although the Flood only appears in the show once, they are a terrifying and effective one-off villain. They infect water and the most terrifying aspect of the monster is its liquid state.

Just one drop of water can infect someone, turning people into zombies determined to infect others. While many of Doctor Who’s one-time villains are quite forgettable, the Flood is still one of the creepiest villains in the show’s history.

The Cybermen

The Cybermen are one of the most feared and iconic monsters in Doctor Who. The classic robotic enemies first reappear in season 2 of New Who and immediately make their mark after killing the parallel version of Jackie Tyler.

The Cybermen are involved in some of the biggest moments in New Who and are often associated with the Doctor’s other long-term enemy, the Master. In one of the most heartbreaking moments from Doctor Who, the Cybermen convert the 12th Doctor’s companion Bill Potts, solidifying them as one of the show’s most ruthless adversaries.

The Family Of Blood

While their true form is never really seen, the Family of Blood is still terrifying during their appearance in one of the best two-part stories from Doctor Who. The Doctor is so afraid of the Family that he turns himself human in order to hide from them. Joining this story, fans are able to see new sides to the Doctor, both when he’s human and forgotten his true origins and when he issues the Family with their punishments.

The Family of Blood is merciless, killing many innocent people within the story and using animated scarecrows that are equally as horrifying as they are. The Family of Blood is a powerful, forceful, and effective enemy that pushes the Doctor to his limits.

The Silence

In the first story of season 5, the 11th doctor is ominously told that silence will fall. At the beginning of season 6, this is picked up again, and the Silence finally shows up as humanoid creatures with long fingers and sunken eyes.

The Silence is unique in that the person seeing them instantly forgets them once they turn away, which makes them particularly difficult to defeat and certainly adds to their scare factor. Although the creatures haven’t appeared much in the show, they certainly left their mark (quite literally on a few of the characters). The Silence would be a great monster to explore again in the future due to their unique and chilling ability.

The Midnight Entity

When season 4’s companion-lite episode “Midnight” came along, fans weren’t quite sure what to expect. The story is both claustrophobic and atmospheric, taking place almost entirely in the small interior of a space shuttle bus.

What makes the Midnight Entity one of the most terrifying Doctor Who monsters is the fact that it is never seen and its origins are never explored. Without the help of a companion, the Doctor is left alone and vulnerable and he’s helpless when the other passengers turn against him, believing he has been possessed by the entity. The story does end with the Midnight Entity being expelled from the shuttle bus, but it is left ambiguous as to whether it is still alive, which means it could still be out there waiting for another chance to steal the Doctor’s voice.

Vashta Nerada

The Vashta Nerada are introduced in season 4 and are living shadows. The creatures are highly deadly and reduce their victims to skeletons. When he encounters them, the Doctor announces that the Vashta Nerada could be any shadow, which means they’re probably living on Earth too.

The living shadows appear almost impossible to escape and once they have a hold of someone, there’s no way to save them. Seeing the Vashta Nerada again under different circumstances and in a different location would certainly prove for an exciting Doctor Who story in the future.

The Daleks

The Daleks, with their cry of “exterminate,” are the most iconic and most recognizable monsters in Doctor Who’s history. The metal pepperpots were created by Davros and have only one emotion: hatred.

The Daleks often feature in huge scale stories like the season 4 finale and are ruthless and maniacal in their approach. The Doctor has battled the Daleks since their very first incarnation and has continued to do so ever since. The Daleks also play a part in several Doctors’ and companions’ exits from the show, which makes them all the more intimidating.

The Weeping Angels

The Weeping Angels were first introduced in “Blink” which is one of the scariest episodes from the Doctor Who franchise. The stone statues can only move when they’re not being observed and predominantly send people back in time to feed off their potential life force.

The Weeping Angels appear multiple times over the years and continue to frighten viewers. They were also memorably responsible for the departures of companions Amy and Rory in season 6, which solidifies them as one of the deadliest enemies in the show. With the recent reveal that the angels will be returning in season 13, they have arguably become the most memorable and beloved monster introduced in the modern era of Doctor Who.
