American Dragon: Jake Long was an American cartoon series created for the Disney Channel during the mid-2000s. The show revolved around the titular Jake Long who could transform into a dragon, thanks to his family bloodline, and is tasked with protecting the line between the magical world and the mundane world. especially from the clutches of the evil Huntsclan.

The series featured an interesting cast of supporting characters, from Spud and Trixie, Jake’s human friends who eventually discover his secret, and Rose, Jake’s love interest and the alter-ego of the villainous Huntsgirl. The cartoon was known for its drastic change in art style between the two seasons.

10 In “Dragon Breath” Jake Dates A Friendly Succubus

Jake tells his crush Rose that he has a date for an upcoming dance. Looking at the magical world, Jake asks out a beautiful girl who turns out to be a nix. Ignoring her warning to leave at a special curfew, she comes into her full powers and tries to steal everyone’s souls.

This is also the episode that introduces the Magus Bazaar, a supernatural marketplace that would appear throughout the series. Spud and Trixie switching bodies at the end was also pretty funny.

9 In “The Long Weekend” Jake & Friends Visit New Jersey

Jake and his friends go camping in New Jersey. While Jake contends with his clumsy father embarrassing him, some fairies request his help against the Jersey Devil. Meanwhile, Jake’s mother and sister end up having to escape a prison-like boot camp after missing a bus to a spa.

In the end, Jake’s dad stops the Jersey Devil and is hailed as a hero by the fairy villages of New Jersey. It’s also interesting to see New Jersey and its local folklore get representation in a Disney cartoon.

8 In “Eye Of The Beholder” Jake Meets Monty Hall

A beauty contest is being hosted for supernatural creatures by an evil wizard. Jake and his gang try to infiltrate the pageant, but their mole, an attractive spider-woman, gets injured at the last second. Fu Dog is forced to take her place at the last second. Along the way, it turns out the evil wizard needs to marry the most beautiful creature to increase his dark powers.

Fu Dog wins but he gets rescued by the other contestants. In the end, everyone learns a good lesson about respecting women.

7 In “Bring It On” Gorgons Try To Take Over The World With Cheerleading

One of Medusa’s sisters is restored to life and schemes to revive her sisters in an evil plot involving the school’s cheerleaders. In order to stop her, Trixie has to infiltrate the squad.

Eventually, Trixie realizes the way to stop the gorgons is to turn them against each other. All she needs to do is remind them that Medusa is the only one anyone has ever heard of and the three take each other out for the heroes.

6 In “Supernatural Tuesday” Jake Meets A British Kid Wizard

Jake becomes rivals with a British kid wizard named Nigel and the two run for student body president. Jake tries to get an advantage using a mind-reading helmet that allows him to tap into what the student body really wants. Unfortunately, it brings about a vengeful ogre against the school.

In the end, Nigel and Jake team up to save the day and it’s nice to see Jake finally get a helping hand from the magical community. Meanwhile, Spud and Trixie end up co-presidents while trying to cover for Jake. It’s a happy ending all around.

5 In “Shaggy Frog” Spud Turns Into Teen Wolf (But With Frogs)

Spud is starting to feel useless and wants to be special like Jake and his wish is granted when he gets bitten by a magical frog, transforming him into a werefrog. With his new abilities, like heightened jumping abilities and vocal tricks, he soon becomes popular at school, but soon finds himself the target on the Huntsclan.

In the end, Spud is made to take an antidote to change back to normal, but Spud learns he can be a hero just by being himself. Then again, with him singing his own theme song during the credits, the series shows there’s no harm in dreaming.

4 In “Game On” Jake Makes His Life A Video Game

While performing an errand for three witches, Jake comes across a magical artifact that essentially works like a real-life video game controller, allowing him to give himself a boost in power, strength, intelligence, or even charm when he needs it.

Eventually, the whole thing turns out to be a lesson on how you really can’t cheat in life to get the things you want, but with all the magical world asks of Jake, it’s nice to see him get a break for once in the series, even a short-lived one. And plenty of people would like to live out a video game if given the chance.

3 In “Siren Says” Jake Learns Not To Judge By Appearances

Jake enters a bachelor auction at his school and finds himself in the middle of two girls: the lovely Danika and the geeky Vicky. Eventually, the cast becomes aware that a siren has infiltrated the contest and the characters assume it’s Danika. Not only does it turn out that Vicky is the real siren, and the one setting up Danika, Trixie has to face off against her and the boys she bewitched before the spell is broken.

Ultimately, it’s a good lesson not to judge by appearances. And to do your research on sirens: they can look like all kinds of things, from bird monsters to fish creatures. And there even used to be male sirens in older stories.

2 In “Dreamscape” Rose Learns She Has A Family

Jake and Rose come up with a secret way to keep up their relationship without anyone knowing: they meet each other in their dreams using magic. Jake decides to exploit this magic to get answers to a test to outwit the scheming Rotwood. Unfortunately, he accidentally releases an evil chimera that attacks people in their dreams.

Rose helps to fight the Chimera and, while in the Dreamworld, she learns that she has a twin sister, her parents are still alive, and that the Huntsclan stole her as a baby, having been previously raised to believe she was an orphan.

1 In “Homecoming” Both Jake & Rose Must Sacrifice For Each Other

Jake and Rose become their school’s king and queen for the homecoming dance. Unfortunately, the Huntsclan have discovered Rose’s connection to the American Dragon and is forced to use magic to destroy the Huntsclan, even sacrificing herself. Luckily, Jake is able to save her at the last second by warping reality so that she was never taken from her real parents to begin with. While the end assures she’s safe, she has lost all memory of him, at least for the time being.

It’s a good lesson in that true love comes from sacrifice. Eventually, Rose would reunite with Jake in Hong Kong, but it’s still a touching part of their story. The one thing that probably would have appeased fans more was if whatever happened to Rose’s sister was brought up, even if it was allegedly being saved for another, unmade season.
