2018’s Lost in Space is a Netflix reboot of the 1965 series by the same name, but packs a lot more sci-fi punch in its first episode than the original does in its entirety. The show boasts of serious star power, mainly in the form of Molly Parker (of Deadwood fame) and the scintillatingly evil Parker Posey.

Although Lost in Space will be ending with its third season, due sometime next year, the present two have obtained considerable acclaim for their scientific accuracy and relationship struggles, but most of all, for that adorable Robot. The public has voted on which episodes they consider the best, so here is a list based on the IMDb ratings for this show.

10 Scarecrow (S2 E4) – 7.8

The Resolute tells Maureen and John that they have lost the alien engine to SAR. The Robinsons offer their own engine (currently on the Jupiter 2.) The temporary colony on the planet below finds itself plagued by an unknown disease — rapidly deteriorating all metallic objects in the area.

Dr. Smith escapes the clutches of justice once again by poisoning the only man who knows of her history, and creates a new identity on the ship’s mainframe. Scarecrow tries to maul a friendly Will, but Ben manages to stop it in time. The kid’s fears are allayed almost immediately, when he discovers that his Robot is not dead.

9 Shipwrecked (S2 E1) – 7.8

The first thing anyone notices about this show is the sheer grandeur of CGI. The premiere of Season 2 has the Robinsons marooned for over half a year on an entirely marine world (for the most part), so the family decides it’s time to set sail: literally. The path to the lightning storm, where they will find the fuel they need, is riddled with titanic waves.

Luckily, Dr. Smith’s childhood sailing lessons come in handy when she saves them from being shattered against a reef. The end of this episode has the group in total awe, finding an alien trench that feels like it was built by Robot’s kind.

8 Echoes (S2 E3) – 7.8

The Jupiter 2 finally finds a port in the form of the Resolute, but it seems abandoned for some reason. Dr. Smith plays more of her traitorous cards, splitting the family apart by strategically shutting different parts of the deck. A small girl is shown to have been left alone; Samantha’s terror is soon explained with the revelation of Scarecrow, a severely maimed robot.

Don helps the parents reorient themselves, being able to view them from the cockpit of the Jupiter 2. Through his telepathic (?) connection with Robot, Will learns that Scarecrow was being abused by humans in order to power/direct the Resolute.

7 Run (S2 E5) – 8.0

This episode lays most of its focus on Judy: depicting her drive and love for her family, but most of all, her sheer stamina. She is forced to run miles (across a terrain studded with complex landforms and haunted by Velociraptor-esque predators.) Judy has to find her dad, who is trapped in a well, before his time runs out.

Penny wants to expose Smith for her horrific crimes, but the latter is too confident for the threat to work on her. More immediate danger starts seeping into the Resolute, as Penny observes that the alien corrosion has reached the mother ship.

6 Evolution (S2 E7) – 8.1

John Robinson makes an unexpected alliance with Dr. Smith, which is of course reciprocated with betrayal. With this act, she can now hang around Hastings and the other superior officers, enhancing her status enormously. Robot forms a deep bond with the group’s horse, and is miserable when it dies.

John tells Maureen that the crew plan to use (read: violate) Robot to “pilot” The Resolute. In fact, they intend to abandon the colonists already on the planet and just leave for Alpha Centauri. Maureen observes a huge gas planet from the porthole, and a plan forms in her mind.

5 Severed (S2 E6) – 8.1

Several characters are forced into quarantine to avoid the spread of the alien infection. Of them, Mr. Jackson’s claustrophobia prevents him from going along with Don’s plan — to pack him along with Dr. Smith, Vijay and Penny into a tiny storage compartment that is to be shot out into space.

Although the outcome has zero casualties, this act of sci-fi genius uncovers the hero’s smuggled goods. On the surface, Will travels along with his mother and Ben to find Robot, but what he instead finds is SAR, pretending to be his friend. SAR is killed, and the real Robot is soon located at the bottom of the cave.

4 Unknown (S2 E 8) – 8.2

In one of the most exquisite scenes of cinematic thrill, John and Maureen weave in and out of the gorgeous smokey planet, even finding an ethereal sparkling beast that lives within the clouds.

This only happens after their successful “mutiny”, convincing Captain Kamal that Maureen’s idea of obtaining water from the gas giant’s atmosphere is the only hope they have. Robot rejects Will’s orders for the first time (even his pleadings) as he goes to find his friend rather than the human workers currently in line for a very gruesome death.

3 Shell Game (S2 E9) – 8.2

Things start heating up when Hasting tries to have Maureen and John killed by preventing their service pods from docking back: this, after they put their own lives in grave peril to save the Resolute. Robot pleads with Will to save Scarecrow, calling him “family”.

This clear show of compassion changes Ben’s mind entirely about the aliens, as he now understands that his prior contempt for them was just a mask for his bigotry. Will and Ben travel to the planet, where they intend to heal Scarecrow (via recharge by lightning bolt.)

2 Danger, Will Robinson (S1 E10) – 8.3

Will friend, Robot, is honestly one of the most darling characters in the entire series (not entirely shocking because who knows how emotionally complex alien robots can be?) Unfortunately, Dr. Smith controls Robot now, and neither Will’s screaming nor crying has no effect on his former friend.

When SAR appears to obtain the alien engine, it tries to murder Will, but this sight sparks Robot’s memories back into existence. It attacks SAR, and they are both tossed out into space. The ending of the Season 1 finale has the Jupiter 2 shunted off into a new planetary system when the engine unexpectedly triggers.

1 Ninety-Seven (S2 E10) – 8.5

The adults make the difficult decision to protect the kids, ninety-seven of them in total. The mess is considerably worse when a bunch of alien ships enters the Resolute, looking for their teleportation device. Scarecrow fights off his own kin as a debt to Robot, and perishes bravely.

It seems that Dr. Smith is also killed, as Maureen finds her destroyed helmet bobbing about in outer space, but it is likely that she has somehow stowed away on the kids’ Jupiter. One can hardly imagine the budget of a show like this, especially in the final scene of the Season 2 finale — the Fortuna, floating amidst the wreckage of a splintered planet.
