Love for Rocko’s Modern Life has endured over the years but what are considered to be the best episodes? Here are the highest-rated on IMDb.

For several years, the zany Nickelodeon cartoon known as Rocko’s Modern Life was somewhat forgotten outside of diehard fans of the network, as well as some early 90’s-era kids and teens. This colorful series, which starred an uptight wallaby, tended to fade into obscurity following its brief run from ’93-’96. But thanks to the recent release of the one-off TV special known as Static Cling – released on Netflix in 2019 – fans were reminded of its wacky sense of humor and unique charm. This nostalgic revisiting of Rocko and friends has given the original show some new life while providing exposure to new, younger audiences for the first time.
In a sense, it was ahead of its time anyway – featuring some risque and weird humor akin to a kid-friendly version of Adult Swim, with some shades of Ren & Stimpy loopiness for good measure. Given the overlooked nature of this humorous cartoon – and its recent resurgence via Static Cling – it seems appropriate to highlight the series’ ten best episodes, according to imdb.com. As most of the half-hour blocks consist of two smaller episodes sharing a single rating, we’ll be listing these entries as a twofer.
10 Hypno-Puppy Luv / Driving Mrs. Wolfe (8.3)
The timid protagonist of Rocko’s Modern Life has shown to be rather impressionable, as season four’s “Hypno-Puppy Luv” so humorously shows. In it, Rocko is hypnotized by his pals Heffer and Filburt into thinking he’s a dog. Naturally, some visually amusing scenes follow.
The second part of this block begins as a cheeky Driving Miss Daisy parody, before taking a left turn into insanity. It features an oblivious Rocko taking a gig as a driving instructor, which ends up turning into a chaotic demolition derby car showdown. This one’s a riot – thanks in part to the comedic chemistry between Rocko and the zany Mrs. Wolfe.
9 Put To Pasture / Future Schlock (8.3)
Not unlike a family-friendly version of South Park’s Eric Cartman, Heffer’s role is that of a goofy, gluttonous friend, who isn’t shy about his indulgences in snackfoods. Case in point? This laugher from season four, which sees Rocko’s friend being rushed to the hospital after overdosing on “Pasture Puffies.” As one might expect, this sets the stage for some amusing exchanges.
The following episode, “Future Schlock” takes on a more imaginative and epic premise. In a plot resembling that of Rick and Morty, it resides in a futuristic O-Town, where distant descendants of Filburt unearth the remains of an old banana.
8 Sugar-Frosted Frights / Ed Is Dead: A Thriller! (8.3)
Even more fun than the aforementioned sci-fi-tinged Rocko is this thriller-laden duo from the third season. The Halloween themes and horror tropes make for an amusing watch, as does the presence of the always-funny superhero caricature, “Really Really Big Man.”
The episode even draws a bit from the Hitchcock-esque suspense brand of thriller, as Rocko’s abrasive neighbor Ed Bighead mysteriously ends up missing.
7 I Have No Son! (8.3)
Most episodes highlighting Rocko’s off-the-wall toad neighbors tend to provide ample laughter, and this season two debut is no different. Taking its place as the first full-length episode made, “I Have No Son!” takes on a grander narrative structure, and actually contains some personal, character-driven moments.
Of course, there are still plenty of those typically wacky Rocko bouts, as the show follows the wallaby on an escapade to locate Mr. Bighead’s condemned son. This makes for an interesting watch for those seeking supplementary material for ’19’s Static Cling, as this character plays a key role in that special.
6 Keeping Up With The Bigheads / Skid Marks (8.3)
In another Bighead-centric romp, this one kicks off with Rocko and Heffer embarking on an over-the-top house renovation. This move comes in response to Ed’s scheme to kick the wallaby out by way of his home inspector nephew.
The second part features Rocko in some more driving-relating shenanigans, as he’s forced to go back to driving school following a gas cap mishap. In typical Rocko form, a seemingly tame incident quickly spirals into chaotic wackiness.
5 Crusin’ (8.4)
This one features a senior citizen cruise ship gown awry and a trip to the Bermuda Triangle, starring the daft Grandpa Wolfe. Given this premise, it perhaps goes without saying that viewers are in for a wild, laugh-out-loud romp here.
With its grand scale, absurd moments, and funny lines – like the captain’s claim that he “likes ramming ducks!” with the vessel – there’s much to find amusing about this 23-minute ride.
4 Power Trip / To Heck And Back (8.4)
Rocko’s fifth episode of the series quickly became a fan favorite, thanks to its memorably weird moments and goofy gags. This includes a simultaneously funny and unsettling scene where comic store CEO Rocko reprimands Filburt after becoming crazed with power.
We then shift to Heffer, who has a near-fatal incident at a suggestively-named chicken restaurant – clearly meant for adults to chuckle behind their kids’ backs. Yes, while being family-friendly overall, Rocko was notorious for its sprinkling of subtle adult humor meant to elude kids.
3 Spitballs / Popcorn Pandemonium (8.5)
This one starts on a seemingly tame note – as it features Rocko and Heffer kicking back at a baseball game. The second part hones in on another typical pastime, as this dynamic duo decides to go to a movie.
But being the comedic cartoon it is, these events quickly spiral into insanity – rife with slapstick, funny gags, and over-the-top animation. The Ren & Stimpy-esque craziness and somewhat-violent bouts are in full force in this romp.
2 Fish-N-Chumps / Camera Shy (8.6)
One would think a relaxing day at sea would seem to make for a pretty mild, uneventful time. But again, this is Rocko’s Modern Life, where almost anything goes; or at least anything that keeps the angry mail from parents at bay…
The first part shows Rocko, Heffer, and Filburt having to tangle with a slew of hostile fish as they set sail for a day of fishing. The second part keeps the laughs going with a very different, but equally funny plot involving a home video made by Rocko to send to his parents.
1 Wacky Delly (8.6)
In the appropriately-named “Wacky Delly” from season three, Ralph Bighead again takes center stage alongside Rocko and friends.
This yuk-worthy premise involves a plot by Ed’s cartoonist son to enlist the “help” of the leads to create an animated stinker in order to break free from his network contract. But surprise! This attempt at cartoon sabotage actually turns into a success. Could this be a cheeky, not-so-subtle message from the Rocko showrunners themselves? Who knows, but it makes for a hilarious watch regardless.
