With two seasons on HBO and a third on the way, His Dark Materials has been a hit with fans and critics, sitting at 81-percent fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

Based on the novel series of the same name by Philip Pullman, the series shows two separate, parallel worlds, connected by a secret pathway, and a young girl named Lyra discovers a secret that could shatter the world in which she lives. Dafne Keen (Logan) stars as Lyra while Ruth Wilson and James McAvoy headline the cast.

9 The Umbrella Academy (83%) – Available To Watch On Netflix

While people seem to love the superhero action TV shows from Marvel and DC, Netflix has gone a little more fantasy-oriented with its superhero series in recent years. Based on the comics by Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba, The Umbrella Academy is about superheroes.

However, it is more about time travel and alternate Earth and trying to stop an apocalypse that seems to follow these six superpowered siblings everywhere they go. There are two seasons so far on Netflix, with a third coming soon.

Lovecraft Country came to HBO in 2020 and shook up the television audience. Based on the novel by Matt Ruff, this fantasy series is about a young Black man traveling across America in the 1950s, mostly trying to make it across the segregated south.

He is searching for his missing father, but what he finds are horrors that he never imagined, all rooted in the intense racism of the south and all leading to a supernatural conclusion that he never dreamed was coming.

The Handmaid’s Tale is based on the critically acclaimed novel by Margaret Atwood about an alternate America where a second American Civil War ended with a totalitarian society that emerges, strips women of all rights, and turns fertile women into Handmaids, where they are subjected to slavery as child bearers.

The fantasy series airs on Hulu and has been a massive success, currently in its fourth season and winning several Primetime Emmy awards throughout its run.

6 A Discovery of Witches (89%) – Available To Watch On Prime Video

Airing on Sky One, A Discovery of Witches, has been a huge critical hit, with an 89-percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Based on the All Souls Trilogy by author Deborah Harkness, and named after the first book in the trilogy, the show stars Teresa Palmer as a historian and witch who is forced back into magic to figure out the secrets of a bewitched manuscript. Matthew Goode stars as a vampire who allies with her to protect the book and learn its secrets. The second season hit in 2021, and a third is on the way.

5 Outlander (89%) – Available To Watch On Netflix

Outlander has been one of the most popular series to air on Starz, fantasy or not. Based on the novels by Diana Gabaldon, Outlander has aired five seasons on the network and have two more ordered and coming in the next couple of years.

The series is about a World War II nurse named Claire who is sent back in time to 1743 and falls in love with a Highland warrior named Jamie Fraser.

4 The Magicians (91%) – Available To Watch On Netflix

Based on the fantasy novels by Lev Grossman, The Magicians is about a school that trains people in magic. However, when a young man named Quentin Coldwater enrolls in the school, he learns the world from a beloved childhood book is real, and the real world in which he lives is in danger.

The series, which aires on SyFy, has been a huge success. On a network that often cancels shows early in their runs, The Magicians aired for a full five seasons, wrapping up its run in 2020. It is available on Netflix now for people to catch up on.

Wynonna Earp was a fantasy series that aired on SyFy and had a descendant of Wyatt Earp battling to defeat revenants of the classic outlaws of her great-grandfather’s era. She eventually ends up working with the legendary Doc Holliday, cursed with eternal health.
