However, this means that there are some movies that are made just to cash in on a popular franchise and are lower in quality.
There are still plenty of franchise movies that are treated with care and turn out to be great. A franchise with great films can often be the one that is remembered most fondly by audiences and can grow into a large and passionate fanbase. Here are the best franchises of all time, according to their average IMDb scores.
10 John Wick: 7.5
John Wick was a complete surprise in 2014. It is an awesome, assassin thriller with a unique world and a great comeback performance from Keanu Reeves. John Wick: Chapter 2 and John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum both expanded upon the first film’s unique setting and created even crazier action sequences with amazing stunts and gun combat.
It has been recently confirmed that John Wick 4 and 5 are going to be shot back to back, so all those anonymous henchmen better not touch John Wick’s dog.
9 Star Wars: 7.5
The original Star Wars trilogy is considered to be one of the greatest trilogies of all time. The prequel and sequel trilogies were divisive, to say the least. The 7.5 IMDb rating may be a product of Star Wars fans disagreeing on the quality of certain movies within the franchise. Still, there is no other franchise that has a fanbase as passionate.
Even if some fans feel that the recent movies may not be as good as the original trilogy, Star Wars is filled with stories, settings, characters, and quotes that many love. Star Wars may not be the most consistent, but it is one of the most beloved.
8 Marvel Cinematic Universe: 7.5
The MCU is easily the most powerful recent franchise in Hollywood, as audiences flock to the movies every year. What is impressive is that the MCU has 23 movies and the audience score is still this high, which speaks to how consistent the films are.
The lowest score in the MCU is The Incredible Hulk at 6.7, which isn’t really that low. The highest is Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, which both have an 8.4. The MCU is a perfect example of how to create epic blockbusters that also give audiences a great experience.
7 Indiana Jones: 7.6
Indiana Jones is another fantastic trilogy. Each movie has a fun action-adventure story as Indy explores while cracking jokes along with his whip. Harrison Ford is awesome as the titular character as he punches Nazis and escapes ancient ruins.
Unfortunately, there is also a weird fourth movie involving aliens and Shia Labeouf swinging on vines with monkeys. While many would like to pretend that Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull doesn’t exist, it only has a 6.1 rating on IMDb, which is still much lower than the first three and a low rating for a movie directed by Steven Spielberg.
6 The Matrix: 7.6
The Matrix is considered one of the greatest action and sci-fi movies of all time. However, as a franchise, the series is not regarded as highly. The Matrix Reloaded has its share of defenders, but The Matrix Revolutions is less liked.
While the sequels may not be nearly as good as the original, The Matrix has a whopping 8.7 on IMDb, so the score for the first movie is doing a lot of the heavy lifting. The sequels can just be regarded as a glitch in the matrix.

Harry Potter is a rare gem because all eight movies in the series are highly praised by critics and fans alike. The lowest score on IMDb is Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, with a 7.4, which is high for any movie.
The highest score is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 with an 8.1, sending the series out on a high note that satisfied hardcore fans. There are plenty of people who criticize these movies, as many claim they are not nearly as good as the books, but there is still plenty to enjoy with all eight of these awesome, fantastical movies.

Each film evolves this friendship between the two, which provides so much heart, it is hard to dislike these hilarious and heartwarming animated films. These movies make audiences around the world want their own pet dragon.
3 Toy Story: 8.1
Toy Story is Pixar’s baby. Each film is treated with such love and care and the first film is an incredibly influential movie, as it began the movement of successful CGI animation. As good as Toy Story is, there is still so much debate about which Toy Story is the best. There are emotional scenes, such as Jessie recounting her previous owner and Andy finally giving his toys away, which made kids and grown-ups grow like babies.
Toy Story 4 was also a welcome surprise by many, who thought the franchise should have remained a trilogy. The Toy Story movies make audiences cry, laugh, and wonder what adventures their toys will go on when they leave the room.
2 Middle Earth: 8.2
If this rating was only taken from The Lord of the Rings trilogy, it would be way higher. The Lord of the Rings movies are considered to be some of the best movies ever made, with amazing fantasy spectacles, epic characters, and an inspiring quest. Return of the King, the third chapter of the trilogy, even won Best Picture at the Academy Awards.
What brings the score down is The Hobbit trilogy, a set prequels that follow the adventures of Bilbo Baggins and a group of dwarves. While not considered to be terrible, this trilogy pales in comparison to its predecessor, especially since director Peter Jackson is at the helm once more. Maybe taking a small book and stretching it into three three-hour-long movies wasn’t the best idea.
1 The Godfather: 8.6
The Godfather and The Godfather Part II are considered to be two of the best movies of all time. The Godfather has a 9.2 rating on IMDb and The Godfather Part II has a 9. These are staggering scores, as very few movies have anything even close to a 9. These films have unforgettable performances from Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, and Marlon Brando. The Godfather Part III has a 7.6, which isn’t bad, but it is generally felt that it’s nowhere as good as the first two.
Francis Ford Coppola created a powerful mob story that captures the rise and fall of a dynasty. Even if the third isn’t as good, the first two still stand as two masterpieces that deserve their high praise.
