A common element in horror movies is to include a “final girl.” As the name suggests, this is the last remaining central female horror character, the one who is still alive even after going up against an unrelenting villain like a masked killer.
Over the years, there have been iconic final girls, making up some of the most popular film characters of all time. They are all smart and brave; they’re doing whatever it takes to save others and themselves. Throughout horror history, there are countless female survivors who have tangled with evil and live to tell the tale. However, only ten of them can rank among the best.
10 Lorraine Warren
While Lorraine Warren from the Conjuring Universe may not be defined as a traditional final girl in horror, she deserves a spot on this list. She goes up against supernatural beings and spirits all the time, putting her life at risk in order to save others.
Her and her husband, Ed, were real-life paranormal investigators, and fans have been able to watch Vera Farmiga bring these stories to the big screen.
9 Gale Weathers
Gale Weathers, who is portrayed by Courteney Cox, is not the star of the Scream movies, but she has always been part of the journey, going from a foil to a final girl in horror. In the first flick, she was a not-so-nice journalist, following the story of Sidney Prescott and Ghostface.
After helping out the main characters, falling in love with one of them, and surviving multiple run-ins with multiple bad guys and gals, she has become a strong, smart, and inspiring character.
8 Julie James
Jennifer Love Hewitt played Julie James in I Know What You Did Last Summer from 1997, as well as I Still Know What You Did Last Summer from 1998. Her and Ray Bronson survived yet continued to be stalked and tormented by the hooked fisherman.
While some people in this genre can be quite dumb, Julie remembers what she went through and attempts to warn others about all of these dangers.
7 Kirsty Cotton
Throughout the years, there have been several Hellraiser films, and Ashley Laurence has played Kirsty Cotton in a few of them. It is not common to see a character survive and keep coming back, time and time. But it is possible if/when said character thinks clearly, fights fiercely and continues to outwit and outrun the antagonist.
6 Jess Bradford
An early example of a final girl is Jess Bradford, who is portrayed by Olivia Hussey in Black Christmas from 1974. This film focused on sorority girls being stalked and killed, but Jess never backed down or gave up, making her a true survivor and hero.
5 Nancy Thompson
On a similar note, there is Nancy Thompson, a main character in A Nightmare on Elm Street. Played by Heather Langenkamp, she had to put up with and think about Freddy Krueger in real life and in her dreams, as he was killing those around her and attempting to take her out, as well.
She was young and scared, but she showed strength and determination, which helped keep her alive and earn her a spot on this list.
4 Sally Hardesty
Another well-known final girl is Sally Hardesty; Marilyn Burns brought this character to life in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre back in 1974. She and her friends ran into some trouble after meeting a family of cannibals.
But she jumps out of windows and eventually escapes for good, even after being tied up, gagged and surrounded by dead people and bad guys with weapons like a chainsaw.
3 Ellen Ripley
Ellen Ripley of the Alien franchise was played by Sigourney Weaver, and this character put so many positive traits on display.
Like a true final girl, Ripley is intelligent, a leader, bold and a survivor who has inspired many others in and out of this story.
2 Laurie Strode
One of the most classic horror movies of all time is Halloween, and a main character who has continued to star in these films is Laurie Strode.
In the first installment, back in 1978, this character was just a high schooler. In the most recent installment, which released in 2018, 40 years had passed; this character, played by Jamie Lee Curtis, was dealing with the repercussions of all that had happened, but she was still alive and strong and ready for whatever came next.
1 Sidney Prescott
And perhaps the most enduring final girl of all horror movies is Neve Campbell’s character from the Scream franchise: Sidney Prescott.
Many people in scary movies run up the stairs when they should run outside, drop their phones when they should call the cops, leave their weapons lying next to the villain’s body, thinking that said villain is dead. Not Sid, though. She is a thoughtful and careful person who never backs down and does whatever it takes to protect her loved ones and stop Ghostface. Plus, she has survived even though she is not a virgin any longer, which usually, in this genre, would have led to her death.
