10 Crocodile Dundee (6.6)
1986’s Crocodile Dundee saw the titular Australian bushman transported into the alien world of New York City. The film was a huge hit, and on a mere budget of less than $10 million, made more than $300 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing Australian film of all time.
The action-comedy’s huge success internationally can be attributed to its sense of humor, which translated well around the world. Crocodile Dundee went on to spawn two sequels, which failed to live up to the highs of the original.
9 Thor (7.0)
2011’s Thor is a superhero take on the fish-out-of-water genre, with the God of Thunder cast to Earth and sent on a journey to learn some must needed humility.
The unique spin on the concept leads to many comical situations, with Thor failing to understand the customs of Earth, such as is the way with many classic fish-out-of-water movies. Thor was a big success and launched the franchise, which is set to release its fourth entry in 2022.
8 School Of Rock (7.1)
The family-friendly comedy School of Rock was a huge success upon its release and proved to be one of Jack Black’s most defining roles.
The film sees a slacker musician impersonate a substitute teacher and teach a music class at an uptight school, bringing an unorthodox and hilariously inappropriate style of teaching that flies in the face of tradition, but brings out the best in his students. The crowd-pleasing and heartwarming comedy was released in 2003 and still holds up and delivers big laughs.
7 Sleeper (7.2)
1973’s Sleeper is perhaps the most out-of-water a fish has ever been, and the film sees a jazz musician mistakenly cryogenically frozen in 1973 and then defrosted in the far future of 2173.
When he awakes 200 years later, the world around him is not what he expected, likewise for the audience, too. Sleeper presents one of the more unique renditions of the future and the film subverts traditional sci-fi prediction with hilarious consequences.
6 Big (7.3)
The 80s classic Big proved to be one of Tom Hank’s defining roles and saw him play a 12-year old who wishes to be big and then finds himself transformed into a 30-something man. This allowed him to get a glimpse into the mysterious world of adults with many funny results.
His innocence and child-like naivete was a breath of fresh air and he found himself excelling at his job and proved to be a hit with the ladies. While certain elements of the film had dated poorly, on the whole, Big hold up as one of the genre’s best movies.
5 Beverly Hills Cop (7.3)
Beverly Hills Cop, starring Eddie Murphy, saw seasoned Detroit police detective Alex Foley find himself in the sunny and crime-infested streets of Los Angeles. The 1984 hit launched Murphy to international stardom and he quickly became one of Hollywood’s most reliable and successful comedians.
Swapping cities proved to be quite the culture shock for Alex and he found Los Angeles did things a little differently. Beverly Hills Cop spawned two more sequels that failed to capture the magic of the critically acclaimed original.
4 Pleasantville (7.5)
1998’s Pleasantville saw a pair of teenagers transported in the world of Pleasantville, a television sitcom from the 1950s. The biggest change they found themselves having to adapt to was the world’s lack of color, but beyond that, the values of the 50s were a world away from what they were used to.
This allowed the film to display and comment on the changes society had gone through, both the good and the bad, not to mention the obvious comic situation the 90s teens constantly found themselves in.
3 Groundhog Day (8.0)
Anti-social weatherman Phil found himself reliving the same day over and over again, trapped in the last place he’d want to be, the small tightknit town of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.
Groundhog Day continues to endure in popularity and the film’s universally relatable quandary is easy for anyone from anywhere to instantly understand and relate to. It is only through his newfound cursed existence that Phil become a better person and more fully appreciate his life.
2 Some Like It Hot (8.2)
The 1959 classic comedy Some Like It Hot is one of the more unusual fish-out-of-water films and features two male musicians who are forced to pose as females in an all-female band. This has given rise to all matter of cross-dressing comedies, which continue to endure in popularity to this day.
Though none have managed to reach the quality of Some Like It Hot which remains a timeless comedy. Their predicament leads to all matter of misunderstandings and uncomfortable situations as they try their best with their unconvincing disguises.

The 1985 science-fiction comedy Back to the Future has gone down in history as one of the all-time greats. Marty McFly finds himself transported back to the 1950s, and with the help of his genius inventor friend, he must get back to his own time before he is erased from existence.
To make his life even harder, his Mom has got the hots for him. The fish-out-of-water film sees Marty struggle to understand life in the 50s and, as a result, he comes across as a little odd to most of the people he meets.
