From Rob Reiner’s Stand By Me, the coming-of-age classic about a group of four boys who venture into the woods to see a fabled dead body, is one of the greatest cinematic studies of friendship, to movies like Super Bad and The Shawshank Redemption, here are some films that really capture friendship.
10 Stand By Me (1986)
Rob Reiner turned Stephen King’s nostalgic novella The Body into one of the definitive cinematic portraits of friendship in 1986. The story is simple enough, as four boys in the 1950s journey through the woods to find a corpse, allowing Reiner to focus on the boys’ friendship.
Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, and Jerry O’Connell are all well-matched in the lead roles, and the movie wouldn’t work nearly as well without their convincing dynamic.
9 Superbad (2007)
On the surface, Superbad is a raunchy comedy about a pair of high schoolers – Seth and Evan, played by the perfectly matched Jonah Hill and Michael Cera – who get an unprecedented invitation to a cool party and spend the night trying to secure some booze to bring along.
But as the story progresses, it becomes more about Seth and Evan’s separation anxiety as they’re about to head to different colleges and don’t want to accept that they’ll miss each other.
8 Lady Bird (2017)
Greta Gerwig’s coming-of-age masterpiece Lady Bird covers all facets of growing up, like tensions with parents, falling in love for the first time, and getting a weekend job. At the beginning of the movie, the title character’s best friend is Julie, played by Beanie Feldstein, but she neglects Julie for Jenna, a more popular girl played by Odeya Rush, to get closer to her latest crush.
Lady Bird eventually comes to realize that Jenna isn’t really her friend and that Julie is her best friend, and in one of the movie’s greatest scenes, they go to prom together.
7 Thelma & Louise (1991)
Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis star in Ridley Scott’s feminist classic Thelma & Louise, portraying one of the most iconic movie friendships ever. The movie follows this pair of best friends who go on the run after killing a man who attempts to sexually assault them.
Both characters are stuck in toxic relationships and feel trapped in their lives. The only people in the world that they can trust are each other.
6 Bridesmaids (2011)
Paul Feig’s Bridesmaids is a movie about a wedding that’s much more about the friendship between the bride and the maid of honor than the bride and groom’s relationship. In fact, the groom is barely a character.
This movie is anchored by Kristen Wiig as Annie, whose friendship with her engaged bestie Maya Rudolph is threatened by the arrival of Rose Byrne, a fancy new friend who threatens to overshadow her.
5 The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Frank Darabont’s prison drama The Shawshank Redemption is a harrowing look at life behind bars, but it has a decidedly sweet emotional core, thanks to the friendship that newcomer Andy Dufresne, played by Tim Robbins, develops with veteran inmate Red, played by Morgan Freeman.
The story has an epic scope, but Andy and Red’s friendship gives it an intimate feel. Robbins and Freeman shared impeccable on-screen chemistry in the roles.
4 Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid (1969)
William Goldman’s script for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is now praised as a perfect screenplay. However, at the time, since it upended so many conventions of the western genre, it was a tough sell. Butch and Sundance flee from danger, which isn’t very heroic.

Billy Crystal and John Goodman share fantastic chemistry in the lead roles. They recorded their lines together, a rarity in animation, so they could create a more tangible relationship between the characters.
1 Frances Ha (2012)
Greta Gerwig stars in Noah Baumbach’s black-and-white gem Frances Ha as the title character, a ballerina approaching 30 who’s still trying to figure out her life. The movie is anchored by Frances’ relationship with her best friend Sophie. Frances jokes, “We’re the same person with different hair.”
Things become complicated when Sophie moves in with her boyfriend, forcing Frances to discover her identity outside the friendship and make connections with other people.
