The newest Call of Duty game in the franchise, Call of Duty: Vanguard, was released on November 5th. This game revives elements from the previous games along with new looks, and features for players to experience. Fans of Vanguard can happily know that anytime it gets old there are quite a few other games, old and new, for them to play in their free time.
2021 has become quite the year for new and updated First Person Shooter games. With the upcoming Warzone anti-cheat system, and the release of Halo Infinite and Vanguard, the latter chunk of the year has been an exciting time for FPS fans. From older games like CS: GO to games that haven’t even been fully released yet like Battlefield 2042, there are plenty of games like Vanguard to play in the next few months.
Valorant
Call of Duty fans who are looking for a change of pace but enjoy the Search and Destroy style of gameplay should look no further than Valorant. The Plant/Defuse game mode of Valorant is essentially Search and Destroy but with a spike instead of a bomb like in Vanguard.
Where Valorant diverges from Vanguard is certainly in its stylized visuals. With bright colors and comic book graphics, Valorant has a completely different feeling to the earth tones that are ever-present in Vanguard. The agents in Valorant have special abilities, some of which border on magical which implies that the setting is not necessarily Earth. In Vanguard, movement is everything but in Valorant, excessive activity is a surefire way to get shot down.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019)
Considering that Modern Warfare and Vanguard come from the franchise, it’s no surprise that they are similar games. In this case, Vanguard runs off of the same engine as Modern Warfare and is using essentially the same weapons attachments with minor WWII adjustments. Techniques like weapon mounting, tactical sprints, and perks were all brought over from Modern Warfare to Vanguard.
The most apparent difference between Vanguard and Modern Warfare is the World War 2 setting. The maps in Modern Warfare are all set in the fictional country of Urzikstan whereas the maps in Vanguard vary from the Pacific front to locations in North Africa. The weapons in Modern Warfare are modeled after weapons that exist in the modern-day (with slight visual alterations for legal reasons).
Counterstrike: Global Offensive
Counterstrike: Global Offensive has a Search and Destroy game mode like Vanguard. The Competitive Mode in CS: GO has one team planting a bomb and the other defusing, much like Vanguard. Finally, the earth tones of Vanguard give a similar kind of feeling to the sandy subtle colors of the maps in Counterstrike: Global Offensive.
The major difference between CS: GO and Vanguard is the competitiveness of the two games. Call of Duty games are often more casual games for the everyday player. Counterstrike, however, has strongly a skill-based advancement system, and a heavily competitive community. In CS: GO, players earn in-game money and purchase weapons at the beginning of each round.
Call of Duty: WW2
Vanguard is, like Call of Duty: WW2, set during the Second World War. Thus, there is a certain amount of overlap in two COD games set in the same era. The weapons for example have to be either the same weapons or similar ones when both games intend to go for vague historical realism.
The newest Call of Duty game naturally runs on a newer engine and naturally has better graphics and smoother gameplay because of this. COD: WW2’s best multiplayer maps are primarily set in Europe on the Western Front of World War 2. Vanguard as opposed to WW2 allows persistent damage to affect the surroundings and therefore change tactics needed to win part of the way through the round.
Rainbow Six Siege
Rainbow Six Siege is similar to Vanguard in the different rounds of play and the halfway switch between offensive and defensive sides. In Rainbow Six Siege, attention to opponent movement and listening for footsteps are very important. In Vanguard, the perks like Radar and Piercing Vision allow players to keep tabs on the enemy in a similar way.
However, Rainbow Six Siege’s primary game mode is similar to the hostage scenario of CS: GO. Tactics like barricading and guarding one area are essential to Rainbow Six while more of a nuisance in Vanguard. In Siege, each different operator has different speeds and different technology/tactics. Every time the teams switch sides in a game of Siege, each player can choose a different operator.
Call of Duty: Warzone
Soon Vanguard and Warzone will be integrated and Warzone players will be able to use Vanguard weapons in the battle royale game. With this integration will come a new map, the afore-mentioned weapons, and the long-awaited anti-cheat system. Warzone is expected to reset to season 1 with these updates on December 2nd.
Warzone takes Call of Duty into the battle royale arena. In Warzone, campers are rewarded even more than in regular COD for their slimy tactics. With trucks, jeeps, and motorbikes players can travel from one end of the large map to the other. After a player’s first death they are sent to the Gulag, where if they win a one-on-one battle they can rejoin their teammates.
Overwatch
Overwatch has been a popular game with many dedicated fans since its release in 2016. Both Overwatch and Vanguard have players earn experience after every game along with a leveling system. Like Vanguard, Overwatch has an active skill-based matchmaking system so that beginner players don’t have to compete against experienced veterans at the game.
Overwatch, like Valorant, has operators (or heroes) who have various skills and abilities. These skills are sometimes other-worldly and sometimes technological. Overwatch’s game mode Assault is played similarly to Vanguard’s Domination Mode. One of the teams has to capture a designated position and the other team has to defend the capture points.
Call of Duty: Cold War
Call of Duty: Cold War is one of the more recent games in the franchise. Many of the game modes in Vanguard are also available in Cold War such as Search and Destroy, Team Deathmatch, Hardpoint, Free-for-all, Domination, and Kill Confirmed. In addition, Cold War has quite a few maps from various countries that are similar to Vanguard.
Cold War has a game mode whose objective on the defense is to extract the V.I.P, a member of the defensive team. Instead of Vanguard’s bomb objective, this one requires players to defend one of their own until they can summon the escape chopper to rescue them. Cold War has a few more vibrantly colored maps with a variety of locations like America and Russia.
Halo Infinite
The newest release in the Halo franchise will officially come out in December 2021. Players in the open beta will find many entertaining ways to play. The game mode Arena Stronghold follows the same rules as Vanguard’s Domination game mode. With three capture points and both teams trying to capture and defend, COD fans will find this mode familiar.
Players of Halo: Infinite will be able to customize their armor including knee pads, visors, helmets, helmet attachments, and armor emblems as well. The Slayer game mode resembles Team Deathmatch from Vanguard. During a Slayer game, the two teams compete to see which can kill the enemies within a certain time constraint. Halo Infinite will give players the option to use classic Halo guns or brand new ones.
Battlefield 2042
In Battlefield 2042’s All-Out Warfare mode there are two game types: Conquest and Breakthrough. Conquest mimics the style of warfare in real life with two massive opposing teams trying to capture large areas of land. Whereas Breakthrough has teams capturing objectives in an area to overtake it.
Battlefield takes Vanguard’s style of play and combines it with Warzone levels of map scale. Instead of tiny teams of three or four competing in a battle royale, there are two teams with up to 128 players on PC and 64 players on console. Tornadoes on the map certainly shake things up mid-game and add some comedic effect to the game. With vehicles like helicopters, jets, tanks, bikes, and ATVs, players can travel over long distances and even roadkill enemies in midair.
