10 Sam Elliot
In an emotionally fraught four-episode arc, Sam Elliot plays Phil Milstein in season 2 of Grace and Frankie. Although he was married at the time, he once had an affair with Grace but felt so bad that he confessed everything to his wife. When she contracted Alzheimer’s years later, he was callously prepared to rekindle his romance with Grace.
However, the way the love triangle plays out is unpredictable and surprisingly touching, with Elliot bringing balancing his gruff gravel-voiced machismo with a tenderness he doesn’t always get to showcase.
9 Marsha Mason
Four-time Oscar nominee Marsha Mason enjoyed a juicy seven-episode arc on the show as Arlene, a longtime friend of Grace who helps her and Frankie promote their Vybrant sex toy line among her religious prayer group. The taboo topic in such a strict setting leads to all kinds of awkward hilarity.
Driving home the theme of aging and the difficulty adjusting to such, Marsha agrees to enter the upscale nursing home called Walden Villas at the behest of her son Scott (Mark Atteberry). Grace often visits Arlene in her new environment, which furthers her own anxieties about aging but also underscores what a great friend she is.
8 Craig T. Nelson
Shattering his iconic role as Hayden Fox on the hit sitcom Coach, Craig T. Nelson played the bohemian wanderer Guy in season 1, becoming Grace’s reluctant first suitor following her separation from Robert (Martin Sheen).
While it’s fun seeing Nelson play against type so well, his character is really there to encourage Grace to find the confidence to date again, enjoy sex at an advanced age despite being out of practice for so long, and pursue happiness post-divorce. But Grace realizes she isn’t quite ready to move on, making Guy instrumental in her long-term healing process.
7 Michael McKean
Laverne & Shirley star Michael McKean played Jack Ayres in a five-episode guest-spot of Grace and Frankie season 6, a sweet-hearted hippie who competes with Frankie at an auction to purchase Jerry Garcia’s shoes. However, it’s his complicated backstory involving Sol (Sam Waterston) and Robert that gives the character so much weight.
Jack reveals that Sol and Robert were the lawyers who defended his wife in a nasty divorce, which ultimately led to the psychological breakdown that sent him to a mental institution. Talented as ever, McKean goes from comedy to drama in a blink, with his character reinforcing how good a friend Frankie is when she teaches him how to forgive Robert and Sol.
6 Talia Shire
Two-time Oscar nominee Talia Shire (Rocky, The Godfather: Part II), made a surprising two-episode guest spot on the show as Teddie Mengela during season 4. She plays Frankie’s estranged younger sister who tried to warn her that Sol was gay on her wedding day, returning to La Jolla 40 years later to make amends.
With a much more stern and strict demeanor, Teddie is hardened by the death of her and Frankie’s 12-year-old brother and her returned cancer diagnosis. Still, in addition to giving more backstory about Frankie’s childhood, Teddie finds the strength to ask for forgiveness.
5 Michael Gross
Family Ties and Tremors star Michael Gross played Jeff on the show during a delightful four-episode guest spot spanning as many years. The ebullient caterer is one of Sol and Robert’s old friends who is married to Peter (Tim Bagley), Robert’s community theater director.
Aside from the enjoyment of seeing Gross play such a wildly different character than he’s known for, his revelation that he had an affair with Robert while Robert was already having an affair with Sol (while still married to Grace) paints a whole other side of Robert previously unseen. Like all of the best guest spots, Jeff is there to help peel back the layers of the main characters.
4 Lisa Kudrow
Friends superstar Lisa Kudrow brings her quirky brand of humor to three episodes of Grace and Frankie season 4. Playing the role of Sheree, Grace’s longtime manicurist, she causes quite a row when Frankie thinks she’s getting in between the two best friends.
However, once Frankie spends some time with Sheree and realizes how much she likes her, her enraged jealousy subsides and the two become friendly. It’s another case of a character potentially coming between the titular leads, only to bolster their bond in the end. In Sheree’s final episode, Frankie and Grace show how much they care for her by illegally breaking into her home to prove her ownership.
3 Ed Asner
Television legend Ed Asner, who very recently passed away at age 91, won seven Primetime Emmys in his illustrious career. One of his final roles to air prior to his death was that of Howard Jay on Grace and Frankie season 7, playing an old friend who helps Frankie launder Nick’s hidden money.
Still equipped with perfect comedic timing, Asner nails his role as an irascible sarcastic older gent with a criminal past. Howard agrees to help Frankie set up a phony candy shop front to launder the money, but only if he can take her friend Joan-Margaret (Millicent Martin) on a date. In a prophetically salient line, Howard says he wants to “spend a few of my last precious moments on Earth with her.” A touching sendoff for an all-time great in Asner.
2 Mary Steenburgen
Longtime TV actor and Oscar-winner Mary Steenburgen gave a hysterical two-episode performance during season 6. As Nick’s ex-wife Miriam Skolka who is prone to casual sexual indiscretions, she once slept with her son’s friend Giacomo, who happened to be her housecleaner, and once injured herself by giving professional tennis player Pete Sampras a handjob.
Despite her wild lifestyle, Miriam manages to stay friendly with Grace even when she marries Nick, emphasizing the emotional maturity of advanced adulthood. Despite her limited screen time, Miriam still makes a lasting impression.
1 RuPaul
The fabulous RuPaul graces the first two episodes of season 5 as Benjamin Le Day, the sassy assistant to a mystery buyer purchasing Grace’s extravagant beach house. Le Day immediately establishes who’s boss when introduced to Grace and Frankie, barking “Who the f*** are you?”
When Frankie returns the powerplay with “who the f*** you?” Le Day does one better by responding with “No, I ‘who-the-f***-are-you’d?’ first,” which is a perfect way for RuPaul to enter the show. Coming in hot and leaving a fiery trail in his wake, RuPaul’s minor guest-spot on Grace and Frankie is one of the all-time best.
