With Thanksgiving behind us, the holiday season has officially begun. For many that means the start of decorating, gift shopping, and spending time with family. However, it also means that all the best television shows will air holiday-themed episodes.

Christmas usually gets all the attention when it comes to holiday-themed TV episodes, but there are other holidays that shouldn’t be overlooked, like Hanukkah. While it might not be as widely celebrated on television, there are a handful of hilarious and heartfelt Hanukkah-themed episodes that are perfect for everyone to enjoy this holiday season.

10 Big Mouth: “A Very Big Mouth Christmas” (Season 5, Episode 8) – 7.1

Since Big Mouth is one of Netflix’s best animated original shows, it’s no surprise they got in on the holiday-themed episode train. While “A Very Big Mouth Christmas” isn’t exclusively about Hanukkah it does feature a themed vignette.

In the vignette, Andrew wishes he weren’t Jewish but when his wish comes true in a dream he realizes how great being Jewish actually is. The episode also features narrations by the hormone monsters as puppets which is sure to add a level of inappropriate hilarity.

9 Even Stevens: “Heck Of A Hanukkah” (Season 1, Episode 15) – 7.4

One of Disney Channel’s first Jewish families was the Stevens family from Even Stevens so it only makes sense that they aired a Hanukkah-themed episode during season one. After Louis accidentally destroys the family’s Hanukkah gifts by snooping, he gets sent to his room where he is visited by the ghost of a relative.

The episode is a fun tribute to It’s A Wonderful Life and features plenty of Hanukkah traditions like playing dreidel and lighting the Menorah as a family. It manages to balance all the usual shenanigans of an Even Stevens episode with holiday traditions making it one of the best Disney Channel holiday episodes.

8 Rugrats: “A Rugrats Chanukah” (Season 4, Episode 1) – 7.5

When it comes to animated shows, Rugrats was the most inclusive and diverse when it came to celebrating various holidays, including Hanukkah since Tommy is half-Jewish. The episode begins with Grandpa Boris telling the babies about the story of Hanukkah and quickly turns into the babies reimagining the story.

The episode managed to explain the history of the holiday in a kid-friendly way making it accessible to audiences of all ages. It also featured a fun side plot with Grandpa Boris and his rival Shlomo vying for the lead role in the synagogue’s Chanukah play.

7 The Nanny: “The Hanukkah Story” (Season 6, Episode 10) – 7.5

The Nanny is one of the most Jewish television shows ever led by the hilarious Fran Drescher, but it wasn’t until season 6 that the show actually celebrated the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah. Though fans had to wait, it was well worth it as the episode is now considered a classic.

Having just gotten married, Fran is excited to spend Hanukkah with her new husband and family but of course, things go wrong. In the end, though, things work out thanks to a little Hanukkah magic the gas in her husband’s car lasted 8 hours instead of one just like the oil in the history of Hanukkah.

6 Crazy Ex-Girlfriend: “My Mom, Greg’s Mom and Josh’s Sweet Dance Moves” (Season 1, Episode 8) – 8.1

16 years after Fran, TV got another iconic Jewish lead to root for in the form of Rebecca Bunch in The CW’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. The episode opens with Rebecca preparing for her mother to visit by decorating her house for Hanukkah. The opening also features a hilarious moment where Rebecca contemplates the proper spelling of “Hanukkah” with three different banners.

While the episode doesn’t lean too heavily into the traditions of Hanukkah, it does show how stressful having family visit you can be especially when you don’t always see eye-to-eye.

5 The Goldbergs: “A Christmas Story” (Season 3, Episode 10) – 8.1

The Goldberg family of ABC’s The Goldbergs are one of the best examples of a Jewish family on television, especially during the holidays. In fact, it’s the only broadcast show that regularly releases a Hanukkah-themed episode, however, the best was the season 3 episode which also served as a parody of the iconic Christmas classic A Christmas Story.

In the episode, the children start gravitating more towards Christmas traditions which annoys Beverly. In an attempt to get her kids back in the festive mood, she adapts Christmas traditions into Hanukkah ones like creating the hilarious “Hanukkah Bush.” The episode is hilarious and it also showcases the struggle many young Jewish teenagers go through comparing their holiday to Christmas.

4 Elena Of Avalor: “Festival Of Lights” (Season 3, Episode 17) – 8.3

While it might have taken decades, Disney officially has a Jewish Disney Princess: Rebeca of Galonia. She premiered in 2019 on the hit Disney Channel animated show Elena of Avalor and was met with major praise. One of the reasons audiences love this episode is because it’s completely centered around Hanukkah.

After getting stranded in Avalor while traveling home for Hanukkah, Princess Rebeca, Prince Ari, and their Bubbie are taken in by Elena and her family. Elena encourages Rebeca to celebrate Hanukkah like she would at home and in turn teaches Elena all about the holiday and its fun traditions.

3 The O.C.: “The Best Chrismukkah Ever” (Season 1, Episode 11) – 8.6

While there are a plethora of teen drama shows with holiday episodes, there is only one show that perfectly captured both Hanukkah and Christmas and that show is The O.C. “Chrismukkah” became a tradition on The O.C. than continued for all four of the show’s seasons.

With his first holiday seasons with the Cohen’s on the horizon, Seth introduces Ryan to his family’s tradition of celebrating “Chrismukkah” given that they’re half Jewish and half Catholic. It’s the perfect Hanukkah episode for blended families and shows that it is possible to celebrate and honor both religious holidays.

2 Seinfeld: “The Strike” (Season 9, Episode 10) – 8.8

Seinfeld aired dozens of iconic episodes over its 9 season run, but “The Strike” remains one of the best. While not everyone remembers it as being a Hanukkah-themed episode, the holiday is mentioned long enough for many to consider it as such.

In the episode opening, Jerry, Elaine, and George attend a Hanukkah party that pulled out all the stops in terms of decoration and food. It’s the “Festivus” celebration though that truly makes this episode iconic. The “Festivus” holiday is a secular holiday created as an alternative to the commercialism pressures of the holiday season.

1 Puppy Dog Pals: “The Latke Kerfuffle” (Season 1, Episode 20) – 9.2

Disney Junior got in on the Hanukkah traditions in 2017 when Puppy Dog Pals aired “The Latke Kerfuffle.” The 15-minute animated segment opens with Bob leaving for work while worried about having enough time to make latkes for a neighbor’s Hanukkah party. Wanting to make Bob proud, Bingo and Rolly decide to make the latkes while he’s away.

While the episode doesn’t showcase the history of Hanukkah, it is a fun episode that features a core tradition of the holiday celebration. It also features an adorable song about making latkes that is sure to get stuck in everyone’s head.
