There are so many holiday movies out there that evoke the warmth of a wintery story without Christmas being at the forefront.

The holiday season is magical, but, for people who don’t celebrate Christmas, there aren’t very many movies that cater to the spirit of this time of year. While Frosty the Snowman and Rudolf The Red-Nosed Reindeer don’t necessarily revolve around the Christian aspects of the holiday, they don’t necessarily acknowledge other holiday experiences.

With all this in mind, there are several other films that embrace the feelings that come with the loveliness of a white winter without going overboard with their emphasis on Christmas, specifically.

10 Edward Scissorhands (1990) Available On Amazon Prime

Edward Scissorhands is one of the best fairytale movies set in the modern-day, and a Tim Burton classic that follows a lonely invention, played by Johnny Depp, who has scissors for hands. While he may seem a little scary as a main character, the story is actually really endearing and ends on a wintry snowy scene where he finally connects with his friend, Kim, played by Winona Ryder.

The film is a really sweet adventure and, while it does have some Christmas elements, what makes this film good for the holidays are its heartwarming themes of acceptance. This film captures the essence of the holiday spirit and thus, is a great watch for anyone.

9 The Night Before (2015) Available On Vudu

The Night Before is about a group of friends who have their last holiday hoorah together since one of them will be starting a family in the next year. To make the celebration the best they’ve ever had, they go on a night’s long adventure to find the Nutcracker Ball.

This film has some Christmas mentions, but that isn’t the main focus of this story. Not to mention, Seth Rogen’s character is Jewish which adds a little more religious diversity in this story. Overall, this story is less about Christmas and more about embracing the spirit of the holiday season by trying to spend time with people who are important in their lives.

8 While You Were Sleeping (1995) Available On Tubi

While You Were Sleeping is one of Sandra Bullock’s best movies, according to rotten tomatoes. It is a holiday romantic comedy that revolves around a woman named Lucy who saves a man, Peter, from an oncoming train – but he ends up in a coma. Not only does she convince his family that she is his fiancée, but she also begins to fall in love with his brother, Jack.

This film doesn’t make Christmas the center of attention, but it does have a distinct holiday feeling with its winter in New York setting. The dramatic irony in this script also adds the love story that emphasizes the importance of being truthful and caring for others, like Lucy finally learns.

7 Snow Dogs (2002) Available On Hulu Premium

Snow Dogs is the story of a Miami dentist who is named in a will and finds out he was left a team of sled dogs that are less than obedient. As the film wears on, he learns to work with the dogs and stop the mountain man, Jack, from taking them away from him.

A large part of this story takes place outside in a snowy Alaskan setting and it really isn’t about Christmas, but rather, a man learning to live with animals that he never suspected he would come to love. With this new dog-packed family, this movie embraces the spirit of coming together during the holidays.

6 Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (2004) Available On Peacock

Though some Jim Carrey fans hold unpopular opinions about Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, the film is still worth the watch. It is the story of two different people that were in a difficult relationship and both decided to have their memories of one another erased to ease their pain. They discover how much they love each other just as their memories slip away.

What makes this film a holiday watch is the fact that it has some of the most beautiful winter scenes and it uses this coldness to further the movie’s attempts to show how this couple miscommunicates with one another. Most holiday films end on a joyful note and this one, thankfully, does that too.

5 Silver Linings Playbook (2012) Available On Netflix

Silver Linings Playbook is one of the best holiday films to come out of 2012 and part of the reason is because it takes place over a course of several fall and winter months. The story follows, Pat, a man with bipolar who prepares for a dance competition with Tiffany, who says she will give his ex-wife a letter from him. Pat is played by Bradley Cooper, making this one of his best movies in his career so far.

The story is a romantic comedy that draws on the importance of mental health and being mindful of other peoples’ imperfections. With it taking place over the course of Halloween, Thanksgiving, and a holiday competition, it certainly embraces the feeling of all of these events as the story unfolds.

4 Mistletoe & Menorahs (2019) Available On Lifetime

Mistletoe & Menorahs is about Christy, who needs to learn more about Hanukah so that she can impress a big client of hers, so she enlists the help of Jonathan – who needs to learn more about Christmas to impress his girlfriend’s parents.

Though this film has Christmas as a prominent piece of the story, it also is one of the few films in existence that equates Hanukah as equally as important, which is refreshing to see. Having representation like this for Jewish audiences is extremely refreshing and gives people who don’t know a lot about it a better understanding of a different holiday celebration.

3 Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987) Available On Amazon Prime

Planes, Trains and Automobiles is less about Christmas and more about how terrible travel conditions are during the holidays. The story follows Neal and Del as they attempt to get home to their families while being trapped in a freakish snowstorm.

This film is great for audiences during the holidays because the ridiculousness that occurs with the men trying to get home may make someone’s real-life experiences with travel seem a little bit less extreme.

2 The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) Available On Amazon Prime

The Grand Budapest Hotel is one of Wes Anderson’s most recent films and it explores the compelling life of one of the previous managers of the hotel, M. Gustave, from the eyes of his apprentice, Zero. The two go on a fascinating journey together as they investigate the death of one of Gustave’s most beloved patrons.

With its characteristically quirky aesthetic and snowy setting, the story embraces the best parts of the winter season. Not to mention, the love story between Zero and Agatha is so adorable that it just increases the amount of holiday spirit in this particular film.

1 Narnia: The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe (2005) Available On Disney+

Narnia is an exciting holiday tale that is a favorite to watch as families prepare for their own winter celebrations. The film follows four children that find a wardrobe with an entire hidden world within its doors. They are surrounded by a winter wonderland that is anything, but perfect and must fix it.

The White Witch (Tilda Swinton) is an extremely frightening villain in this film and her icy reign gives the air of a holiday movie without actually expressing all the warmth and kindness that usually goes along with them. However, the kids learn to fight back against her and they save each other in some of the most endearing ways in the final battle.
