True crime has long been a popular genre of literature, film, and TV, and it seems more popular now than ever before thanks to the likes of podcasts and Netflix documentaries. There’s just something endlessly fascinating about serial killers, even if their actions are obviously deplorable.

Countless movies have been made about serial killers, whether fictitious or based in reality. Most of these movies have happy endings, with the killer either dying or receiving their comeuppance at the hands of the law. But, not every movie has a happy ending; sometimes the killer gets away, as is the case in these 10 films.

10 The Silence Of The Lambs (1991)

The main villain in The Silence of the Lambs, Buffalo Bill, is caught and killed by Clarice Starling, but there are two serial killers at the heart of the movie, with the other being Hannibal Lecter himself. The movie begins with Hannibal in prison following his killing spree, aiding Clarice in her hunt for Buffalo Bill.

However, he manages to manipulate Clarice into granting him better accommodations, and he uses the opportunity to kill various prison guards and paramedics, escape, and flee to some exotic country where he lives the rest of his life in anonymity—that is, if viewers ignore the events of Hannibal.

9 The Strangers (2008)

Loosely based on the Manson family murders, The Strangers sees various criminals/serial killers breaking into a couple’s house and torturing the occupants. They manage to kill James and James’s friend Mike, but Kristen manages to survive her multiple stab wounds.

In the end, there is no comeuppance to be found for the killers. Their motive is simply to cause chaos and kill people, and they successfully drive away after their night of debauchery, promising each other that “it’ll be easier next time.”

8 Wolf Creek (2005)

Wolf Creek is loosely based on the Backpacker murders of Australia, a slew of killings spanning the late 80s and early 90s that resulted in seven deaths. The real story has a happy ending, with perpetrator Ivan Milat being arrested and sentenced to seven separate life imprisonments.

The movie isn’t so conclusive, though. It stars John Jarratt as Mick Taylor, a psychopath who kidnaps, tortures, and kills backpackers traveling through the remote Australian outback. Mick gets away with the killings, and the ending literally sees him walking into the sunset a free man.

7 American Psycho (200o)

American Psycho stars Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman, a wealthy Wall Street banker and serial killer. The end of the movie is quite bizarre, as it sees Bateman desperately trying to confess to his crimes. However, friends and colleagues don’t take his confessions seriously, and Bateman is left questioning if the killings were actually real.

He then goes to dinner with his friends, explaining through voiceover narration that he will escape punishment. And escape punishment he does.

6 Funny Games (1997)

The Strangers was essentially a remake of Funny Games. Originally released in Austria in 1997, Funny Games concerns two young adults breaking into the home of a wealthy family and torturing the occupants with their titular and sadistic “funny games.”

The end of the film is quite experimental, as one of the killers breaks the fourth wall and literally rewinds the film to prevent the death of his criminal partner. They kill the family and proceed to the next house, furthering their criminal misadventures.

5 Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer (1986)

Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer is loosely based on the life of real-life killers Henry Lee Lucas and Otis Toole. Both Lucas and Toole were eventually apprehended and arrested, and both men died while serving life sentences in prison.

In the film, Otis is killed by Henry. It is also implied that he kills Otis’s sister Becky, despite her confession of love. The end of the movie sees Henry dumping Becky’s suitcase at the side of the road before driving away as a free man, presumably ready to kill again.

4 Halloween (1978)

The original Halloween is an all-time slasher classic. It concerns Michael Myers, a psychotic man who breaks out of a mental hospital and murders a handful of teenagers on Halloween night. It’s also implied that Michael is some type of supernatural creature who is unable to die.

This is proven at the end of the movie, as Michael survives multiple gunshots and walks away into the night to seek new victims. The story was obviously continued in Halloween II, but most people ignore that. Even the filmmakers of the 2018 sequel.

3 Zodiac (2007)

As the title suggests, Zodiac is based on the hunt for the Zodiac Killer. This still-unidentified man killed at least five people—while claiming to have killed a total of—between the late 60s and early 70s. It is perhaps the most famous cold case in American history, and one of the rare cases in which a prominent and publicized serial killer got away.

The case is made even more amazing owing to the Zodiac’s continued correspondence with the police and press. Just as the real Zodiac Killer got away, so too does the killer in Zodiac.

2 The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)

Arguably the most influential slasher in movie history, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre was released in the fall of 1974 to great controversy. It concerns Leatherface, a fictional serial killer who kills a group of young adults around his house in rural Texas.

Leatherface was loosely based on Ed Gein, complete with human bone house decorations and a mask made of human skin. Sally proves the only survivor of the ordeal, and Leatherface is left swinging his chainsaw in frustration in the early morning sunrise.

1 Natural Born Killers (1994)

Natural Born Killers was another controversial film, having released in the summer of 1994. It concerns Mickey and Mallory Knox, a mass-murdering couple who are given great attention, glorification, and popularity by the media.

The two are eventually imprisoned for their numerous crimes and set to transfer to mental hospitals, but they escape during a prison riot and kill a tabloid journalist. The movie ends with Mickey and Mallory on the run, having started a happy family together.
