Thanks to self-isolation and quarantines imposed by the coronavirus pandemic, people around the world have found themselves having to spend extended amounts of time with family members, but no two families are the same, and some have had an easier time dealing with family members with others.

Hollywood has seen several families of successful actors over its history, and these 10 movies offer the best performances by those who share the same blood.

10 Zoolander (2001)

Playing the roles of Victor and Chris Honeywell respectively, Hot Pursuit (1987) marked the first time that Jerry Stiller co-starred with his son Ben Stiller. The two didn’t always play family members in the movies they shared since then, but it was common for their characters to have a father-son type relationship.

Their best-known collaboration was Zoolander, where Jerry played Maury Ballstein – the agent of Ben’s Derek Zoolander model character. The movie also features Ben’s mother – Anne Meara – and his then-wife – Christine Taylor – both of whom frequently co-star in Ben’s movies.

9 Ricki And The Flash (2015)

With a record 21 Academy Award acting nominations, Meryl Streep’s name is universally recognized among movie fans, but not nearly as many are familiar with her daughter – Mamie Gummer.

As a toddler, Gummer played the baby of Streep’s character in Heartburn (1986) before the two played young and old versions of the same character in Evening (2007), but their best work together comes in Ricki and the Flash, where Gummer plays the daughter of a woman (Streep) who must make amends with her family after abandoning them to pursue a rock and roll career.

8 The Great Buck Howard (2008)

Sticking with movies featuring legendary actors with their children, The Great Buck Howard stars Colin Hanks (King Kong) as a Troy Gable – a man who drops out of law school to work for an illusionist named Buck Howard (John Malkovich).

The decision causes a major rift between Troy and his father, who’s played by Colin’s real father – Tom Hanks. Colin also had a small part in That Thing You Do! (1996), which Tom wrote, directed, and starred in. The father and son have also both portrayed TV personality Mister Rogers on separate occasions.

7 Knocked Up (2007)

Judd Apatow’s Knocked Up was a big success, thanks to the performances from stars Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl as unlikely couple Ben and Alison, but it’s another family in the movie that steals the show.

The rocky dynamics between spouses Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann) and their kids are hilariously relatable. Not only is Mann married to Apatow, but their daughters – Iris and Maude – also play Debbie’s children. The characters got a spin-off with This Is 40 (2012), and the little Apatows also played Mann’s character’s children in Apatow’s Funny People (2009).

6 Grosse Pointe Blank (1997)

Siblings John and Joan Cusack shared their first professional movie with relatively minor roles in Class (1983), but have now done so eight different times in classics like Sixteen Candles (1984), Broadcast News (1987), and High Fidelity (2000), but their best chemistry comes in Grosse Pointe Blank.

John plays Martin Blank – a contract killer who receives an invitation to his high school reunion but resists when his nosy but caring secretary (played by Joan) urges him to go. She books him an assignment in his hometown anyway, giving him no excuse not to attend the reunion.

5 Wall Street (1987)

Polarizing celebrity Charlie Sheen followed in the acting footsteps of his father Martin at a young age, and while he’s not credited in all of them, he’s shared almost 10 movies with his old man. The best performance between the two famously came in Wall Street.

Charlie plays Bud Fox, an upstart stockbroker who idolizes his greedy but successful superior – Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas). In his blind ambition for success, Bud’s increasingly underhanded and illegal decisions jeopardize the livelihood and relationship with his father, played by Martin.

4 Good Will Hunting (1998)

Not many pairs of brothers can claim to have both won Academy Awards, but it’s safe to say the parents of Ben and Casey Affleck are proud of their accomplishments. They first acted together in Chasing Amy (1997), and later in 200 Cigarettes (1999), with their best joint performance coming in between with Good Will Hunting.

In the powerful movie that nabbed Oscars for Ben, Matt Damon, and Robin Williams, the Massachusetts-grown Affleck brothers perform their most honest acting as they portray a pair of close, working-class friends who grew up together in Boston.

3 The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)

Brothers Luke and Owen Wilson both saw their feature acting debuts in Bottle Rocket (1996) – the same movie that launched the filmmaking career of Wes Anderson (and also featured Andrew Wilson). The pair became recurring actors in Anderson’s work, with their best performance together coming in The Royal Tenenbaums, which Owen co-wrote.

Ironically, in a story about a large, dysfunctional family, the Wilson brothers don’t play blood relatives, as Luke plays clinically depressed ex-tennis pro, Richie Tenenbaum, while Owen plays the eccentric author and Richie’s best friend – Eli Cash.

2 Donnie Darko (2001)

Jake Gyllenhaal first acted alongside his sister Maggie in A Dangerous Woman (1993) and Homegrown (1998) (both directed by their father – Stephen) before co-starring as brother and sister in Donnie Darko – the time-bending teen sci-fi drama generally credited with vaulting Jake into mainstream Hollywood conversations.

The complex and layered portrayal of the mentally tortured Donnie Darko feels like the work of a far more experienced actor than the 20-year-old Jake, whose bickering with his sister Liz (Maggie) feels realistically flawed and is well-acted, likely through years of practice.

1 The Pursuit Of Happyness (2006)

Will Smith has made a great career out of charismatic comedy roles and action heroes, but his most heartbreaking and emotionally nuanced performance is real-life homeless man-turned-stockbroker Chris Gardner in The Pursuit of Happyness.

Driving Gardner to work tirelessly to change his life is the well-being of his young son, played adorably by Smith’s son – Jaden – in a performance impossible not to fall in love with. Smith’s daughter – Willow – played his character’s daughter a year later in I Am Legend (2007), and Will and Jaden played father and son again in After Earth (2013).
