10 Arthur Christmas (2011) – 7.1

2011’s Arthur Christmas is an animated film that tells the story of Arthur, Santa’s clumsy grandson who is assigned to answer children’s letters to Santa. After a present is left behind, he is given the task to deliver it to a little girl before Christmas morning.

Arthur Christmas is a great family film that viewers of all ages can enjoy. It’s colorful and entertaining, with amusing humor and likable characters. At the heart of the movie is its depiction of a slightly dysfunctional family whose members love one another nonetheless.

The movie experiments with suspense and imagination, leaving the murders to happen offscreen. This decision both spares the viewer of the gory details and lets their imaginations run wild.

Christmas in Connecticut is an excellent screwball comedy that is big in laughs and heart. Stanwyck is charming in her role as Elizabeth Lane, the journalist, a departure from her more villainous role in her previous film Double Indemnity. The performances from the rest of the cast are equally great, making for a light-hearted and fun holiday viewing.

7 A Christmas Carol (1938) – 7.5

In this rather short – one hour and nine minutes – black and white adaptation of the Charles Dickens novel, Reginald Owen plays Ebenezer Scrooge, the old and rich grouch who hates Christmas and everything it represents. However, after being visited by three ghosts he has a change of heart and embraces the season of giving.

This early version of A Christmas Carol features well-received performances from the entire cast and works to flesh out the supporting characters including Bob Cratchit, Scrooge’s clerk.

Bing Crosby stars in White Christmas, a musical about two male performers who become romantically involved with a sister act. Together, the two duos team up to save a failing inn.

The film is a timeless holiday movie that dazzles audiences with its grand costumes and fun musical numbers. Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, and Vera-Ellen prove themselves to be bonified triple threats, playfully executing each song and dance routine.

Although Clark is obviously desperate, he is an extremely likable character that the audience grows to love. His love for his family is very clear, and the lengths he is set to go to make them happy are heartwarming and hilarious.

There is no better way to make an old story feel new again than by adding the beloved Muppets in the mix. The Muppet Christmas Carol is a live-action adaptation of the novel as told by Kermit, Gonzo, and the rest of the gang. Michael Caine stars, in person, as Scrooge.

The Muppets breathe life into the story with their light-hearted humor and silly voices. Although they don’t stray from the original story, they add some color. Caine was praised for his role as Scrooge and for his ability to act alongside his Muppet co-stars.

The iconic A Christmas Story tells the story of Ralphie, a little boy in the 1940s whose one and only Christmas wish is a BB gun. Unfortunately, the adults in his life, including his mother, his teacher, and the Santa Claus at the local department store decline his wish for safety reasons.

The movie finds the perfect balance of humor and sentimentality in its various plot points. There are multiple hilarious yet relatable situations in the film, including a scene involving a tongue on a frozen pole, that resonates with audiences.

2 The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) – 8.0

Disney’s The Nightmare Before Christmas is a unique film for it fits equally within the Christmas-movie and Halloween-movie genres. The Tim Burton produced animated movie tells the story of a skeleton named Jack in Halloween Town who, after accidentally visiting Christmas Town, decides to take over from Santa Claus.

The songs in the film are very catchy and beautifully scored, and the stop-motion animation is amazing. Children and adults alike can find the fun in its story. However, it’s possible that some of the inhabitants of Halloween Town might scare smaller children.

Brian Desmond Hurst’s A Christmas Carol (released as Scrooge outside of the US) finds Alastair Sim in the role of Ebenezer Scrooge. Like in other adaptations, Scrooge is a miserable businessman who believes that Christmas is a waste of time until he is visited by three ghosts.

Hurst is excellent as Scrooge, particularly in the way he uses his facial expressions to depict a sense of soullessness and vulnerability. He plays Scrooge as a multi-dimensional character rather than as a caricature. Additionally, the stunning black and white cinematography and overall production value still hold up today, proving that this movie is indeed a timeless classic.
