10 Best PlayStation 5 Games Like The Legend Of Zelda

With a number of exclusive new titles coming this winter, the PlayStation 5 library is starting to look a lot more full. While the console will never be host to an actual Nintendo main series The Legend of Zelda game, there are now plenty of options for a player looking to satisfy their urge to fight and explore in a high fantasy setting.

The Legend of Zelda series is one of the most iconic, and Breath of the Wild was no exception with its expansive open world and breathtaking visuals to go with an engaging gameplay style. No other game provides quite the same experience but these titles will go a long way to filling that gap for PS5 players.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

The most Zelda-like entry to the massive Assassin’s Creed franchise, Valhalla provides a vast open-world experience and is the best Assassin’s Creed game so far. For players who enjoy the thrill of exploring a fantastical, or in this case historical world on foot or on horseback, Valhalla delivers. While the story itself is slightly more linear, there is so much to do and see in the game that lack of freedom is never a complaint.

Of course, the game also provides a lot of opportunities for engaging melee combat, as well as using bows and other weapons. The combat is significantly more brutal and realistic but players also have opportunities to use their stealth to complete missions in a more subtle fashion.

Godfall

One of the less well-known action role-playing games for the PlayStation 5, Godfall also resembles God of War in its action-packed gameplay punctuated by epic boss fights. The game allows the player to select from five different weapons categories and customize the game experience to their liking while exploring a world split into three elemental realms. Keeping weapons permanently may alone be a source of reassurance for players frustrated by Breath of the Wild’s weapons durability mechanic, which fans hope won’t be including in Breath of the Wild’s sequel.

Godfall is a strong entry in the ARPG genre making it a decent competitor for games like Breath of the Wild but it is also unique in a few ways. For example, the game is centered around completing missions and gaining better loot, similar to the looter-shooter style of games like Destiny 2. Overall it provides an enjoyable gameplay experience with some beautiful environments.

Tales Of Arise

While not as well-known as the Zelda series, the Tales franchise is another series of Japanese RPGs that has been around almost as long. Bandai Namco’s latest entry in the series, Tales of Arise, is the most successful to date, outselling the previous titles and receiving a positive response from critics.

Just as with Zelda games, a player can expect sharp combat, an ambitious story, beautiful visuals, and of course an excellent soundtrack to compliment the experience. Tales of Arise doesn’t feature an open world but nevertheless gives the sense of a well-fleshed-out setting that will keep players engrossed.

Immortals Fenyx Rising

For players who enjoy games like Breath of the Wild and have an affinity for Greek mythology, Immortals Fenyx Rising may be ideal. Originally known as Gods and Monsters, the game tells the story of a mortal, a player-created character, tasked with stopping the evil Typhon after his escape from the underworld.

The game features an expansive open world that is visually very similar to Breath of the Wild and likewise makes exploration an enjoyable part of the game in its own right. While the game delves quite deeply into Greek mythology, Immortals Fenyx Rising is a game worth checking out for anyone who enjoys engaging combat in cool environments and it even features a challenging nightmare mode after beating the game.

Ratchet And Clank: Rift Apart

Like previous entries in the Ratchet and Clank series, Rift Apart is a third-person shooter set in a fun futuristic setting that spans planets and dimensions. The gameplay also mixes in different gameplay elements including strafing and platforming for players who might not usually be interested in shooter games.

While not an open-world game in the traditional sense, the game introduces a lot of interesting environments to traverse as well as a new system that uses interdimensional portals to instantly travel between locations. The characters also remain very charming and, as with Zelda games, this is a title that makes a player want to spend as much time in its world as possible.

Cris Tales

Developed by a pair of indie game studios, Cris Tales is a visually stunning turn-based RPG centered on the idea of manipulating time to create a brighter future for the protagonist, Crisbell. The game is incredibly stylish especially for an indie game and the music, environments, and character designs are all top-notch.

For players who enjoyed using time travel to solve problems in previous Legend of Zelda titles, Cris Tales brings back that thrill. Turn-based combat may be slightly less engaging for the player, but it is even possible to manipulate time within battles and gain an important edge, keeping things interesting.

Returnal

Released earlier this year as a PlayStation 5 exclusive, Returnal is a rogue-like third-person shooter game set in a futuristic environment that might not seem very similar to Zelda games at all at first. However, where Returnal does resemble Zelda games and specifically Breath of the Wild, is in the importance of exploration in the game.

Returnal is a game that uses the idea of a player-controlled character stuck in a time loop and each time the player dies, the landscape changes to something completely different. The player is tasked with breaking the loop in an ever-shape-shifting world, traversing alien environments, and encountering hostile entities as they go.

Ghost Of Tsushima

Ghost of Tsushima utilizes the historical setting of Tsushima Island during the first Mongol invasion of Japan to tell a rich story in a visually striking location. The game features a large open world and allows the player to travel on horseback to various places on the island, which is full of interesting NPCs and a large number of side quests.

While the open world and some of the side quests can leave a little to be desired, the combat is also fun and intuitive and it is impossible not to be drawn in by the story and art direction. As with Breath of the Wild, it is easy to get lost in the world and spend hours just exploring and completing side missions.

Demon’s Souls

A remake of the original Demon’s Souls, a PS3 title from From Software, Bluepoint Games’ Demon’s souls is a notoriously difficult action role-playing game. As with the Dark Souls games, the player is tasked with defeating a range of extremely difficult enemies and monsters in a darkly beautiful world.

While the gameplay is a step up from Zelda titles, the game does test similar skills in melee combat. Exploration can be more punishing in Demon’s Souls, but it can also be similarly rewarding. The game is a significant improvement over the original and well worth playing for any player up for a challenge.

Horizon Forbidden West

Set for a release early next year, Horizon Forbidden West is the sequel to Guerrilla Games’ action role-playing game Horizon Zero Dawn, which contained one of the best open worlds to explore, and features the same visually striking post-apocalyptic environment.

The game’s trailer has a lot to be excited about and the new title will feature an even larger explorable area than the original (per NME), even adding in underwater exploration. For those looking for the thrills of exploration and combat in a fantastical setting, Horizon Forbidden West will likely be a great substitute on the PS5 for any Zelda game.
