Across all four entries of the Batman: Arkham games, the Joker remained a consistent threat to Batman and his pursuit to protect Gotham City. Not only is he Batman’s most iconic rival but he always provides a new and unique plot that tends to push Batman to his limits.

Voiced by both Mark Hamill and Troy Baker, the Joker is equal parts sinister as he is charismatic and darkly humorous. Since he is almost constantly toying with or taunting Batman, he has a plethora of lines that are memorable but which ones put the most smiles on fans’ faces.

10 “What Is It About Dead Relatives That Turns You Into A Giant Rodent?” – Arkham Knight

While investigating the origins of Man-Bat in one of the Arkham games’ scariest quests, Batman discovers that it was originally Dr. Kirk Langstrom, who used bat DNA to try to cure deafness. Instead, he mutated into a giant bat creature and accidentally murdered his own wife in the process.

Of course, the Phantom Joker following Batman can’t help but make a witty comment, “His wife, your parents, hehe, what is it about dead relatives that turn you into a giant rodent?” As uncaring and cruel as that line is, it is a humorous one thus fitting the Joker’s personality perfectly.

9 “That Reminds Me, I Really Need To Get Me Some New Shoes.” – Arkham Asylum

Killer Croc makes quite the introduction in Batman: Arkham Asylum as one of that game’s scariest villains. He rises out of an elevator standing over ten feet tall, threatening to hunt down and devour Batman. Of course, the Joker while being transferred through the Asylum shows no fear.

Instead, all he can think about is Croc’s leathery hide, “That reminds me, I really need to get me some new shoes.” Likely pondering the idea of skinning Croc and combined with his comment, it leads to quite the impact of levity after such an ominous intro to Killer Croc.

8 “How About ‘Getting Your Ass Kicked’ 101?” – Arkham City

After the Joker puts Batman through so much, the Clown is miraculously cured thanks to stealing it from Mr. Freeze. The Joker feels so good, he even decides to take on the Batman himself in hand-to-hand combat, offering to teach him a lesson. Of course, Batman responds with, “There’s nothing you can teach me, Joker.”

“There’s always something to learn. How about ‘Getting Your Ass Kicked’ 101?” This line is even delivered in an awesome way by Mark Hamill, giving one of his best Joker performances but what really makes the line great is that Batman instantly overpowers him with a few punches.

7 “Have You Ever Had A Really Bad Day?” – Arkham Origins

Despite fans’ initial disappointment that Mark Hamill did not return for Batman: Arkham Origins, Troy Baker gave a fan-favorite performance that proved him to be a worthy replacement. One of the best examples in which Troy shines in the prequel is when he first meets Harleen Quinzel.

The Joker delivers a very long monologue reminiscent of The Killing Joke. It’s a great one but it all starts with a variation of the famous line from The Killing Joke, “Have you ever had a really bad day?” Troy Baker is both charming and sinister in his delivery and it sucks the player in for one of the Joker’s best segments across the four games.

6 “That Actually Is Pretty Funny!” – Arkham City

In a shocking twist, the cured Joker was actually Clayface in disguise to pull one last great trick on Batman and give the player one of the Arkham games’ best boss fights. The real Joker is on death’s door and demanding Batman to give him the cure. Batman comments on how he and Joker are stuck on a constant loop leading to Joker overreacting, stabbing Batman from behind.

Joker’s own actions cause Batman to drop and destroy the cure to Joker’s sickness. Batman asks, “You want to hear something funny? Even after everything you’ve done, I would have saved you.” This causes the Joker to let out one last laugh which he chokes to death on before saying, “That actually is pretty funny!” Allowing the Joker to have an iconic death with an actual smile on his face.

5 “Get Ready For The Encore.” – Arkham Knight

The climax of Batman: Arkham Knight is not a predictable one, especially when Batman is injected with enough fear toxin that allows the Phantom Joker to actually take over his body. Fooled by his own hubris, Joker taunts Scarecrow thinking that he is immune to fear leading to Scarecrow asking, “Do you not understand? It is over!”

The Joker plays into Batman’s plan perfectly and says, “Get ready for the encore.” This continues the running theme of the Joker viewing himself as the world’s greatest showman. It makes Scarecrow inject Joker with the fear toxin, allowing Batman to fight Joker in the mind.

4 “Oh, This Is Going To Be Fun!” – Arkham Asylum

Not only did Batman stop all assassins, but he also managed to outsmart and beat the Joker at his own game. Batman was able to save stop the Joker, incapacitate Bane, and save Jim Gordon without killing anyone which at first makes the Joker angry.

However, as he’s being rolled into the Arkham Ward of Blackgate Prison, he’s laughing about it and even yelling out, “Good one, Bats!” As he continues to laugh, he looks at the camera, “Oh, this is going to be fun!” guaranteeing that the rivalry between Batman and Joker will last forever.

3 “You Of All People Should Know, There’s Plenty Wrong With Me.” – Arkham City

For the first chapter of Batman: Arkham City, the Joker had been kept in shadows and it’s because the Titan process from Arkham Asylum has afflicted him. At first, Batman thinks it’s just a trick and says, “There’s nothing wrong with you.” Then Joker slowly walks into the light after a laugh.

“Nice of you to say but you of all people should know, there’s plenty wrong with me.” Proud of his dark and twisted nature while also poking fun at his ill state. His face is covered in sores, lesions, and bloodshot eyes. It makes for a perfect reintroduction to the character and establishes the sickness that is rapidly killing him.

2 “Miss Me?” – Arkham City

After his rather visceral death in Arkham City, nobody expected the Joker to make a return in Batman: Arkham Knight. The marketing actually did a better job hiding the fact that Joker was in the game than they did hiding the fact that the Arkham Knight was really Jason Todd.

So when first-time players are at Ace Chemicals trying to reduce the blast of Scarecrow’s bomb, they are not expecting to turn around and see Joker standing there with a gun before it all goes silent, “Miss me?” Joker shoots Batman and the player is shocked and confused by the Joker’s presence.

1 “Welcome To The Madhouse, Batman!” – Arkham Asylum

Of course, the Joker wanted to be brought to Arkham Asylum just so he can escape and take control of the island. So upon getting loose (thanks to Harley Quinn), the Joker gets behind a barrier and taunts the Caped Crusader, “Welcome to the Madhouse, Batman! I set a trap and you sprang it gloriously! Now let’s get this party started…”

This is how the game and franchise truly begin and from that line alone until his ending in Arkham Knight, the Joker remains a constant threat to Batman in both a physical and psychological way. It’s why the Joker will forever be Batman’s greatest foe.
