Thankfully, there are some standout roguelite games that are worth playing over and over again (pun intended).
The main challenge behind creating a good roguelite game is to craft a world that keeps players interested enough to play repeatedly. The best ones keep every run interesting with new items and challenges. These roguelites have well-designed procedurally-generated maps, fun mechanics, and sometimes, a compelling story.
10 Risk of Rain 2
Following the success of the platform game, Risk of Rain, Hopoo Games released the third-person shooter, Risk of Rain 2. There is a stark contrast in the visuals between the two, as the latter takes place in a 3D environment. Fans of the first title will find the sequel exciting, as it brings several of the same 2D monsters and playable characters into its alien 3D planet.
Like the first game, the player’s goal in Risk of Rain 2 is to reach the teleporter at every level and build up enough strength to defeat the final boss. While it doesn’t bring too many new things to the genre, it does the classic roguelite mechanics justice and gets more challenging the farther the player progresses.
9 Noita
Developed by an independent game studio, Nolla Games, Noita is one of the more pleasantly surprising roguelites to come out in 2020. The game lets you play as a witch and the goal is pretty straightforward – kill all the magical creatures in the witch’s path. These magical creatures, by the way, are named after Finnish mythological creatures, adding an interesting layer to the roguelite’s lore.
The main draw of the game is its claim to have simulated every pixel. This means that each pixel can change and react to the player’s actions. Pair this with the seemingly random wands and weapons that can sometimes kill the witch, and players get a somewhat chaotic but highly enjoyable game.
8 Nuclear Throne
This top-down shooter developed by Vlambeer turns players into mutants who have to shoot through a post-apocalyptic world full of terrifying monsters. The goal is to go through each procedurally-generated level and survive long enough to take the throne.
Nuclear Throne’s story is simple and straightforward, but it makes up for this lack of depth with challenging combat mechanics. Each level presents difficult battles with an increasingly overwhelming mob of monsters. Not only are there powerful weapons to collect to defeat these monsters, but mutants can also morph their body parts to improve their skills.
7 FTL: Faster Than Light
In a galaxy far, far away, players are tasked to become the captain of a ship that needs to deliver an important message to an allied fleet. Of course, the Rebellion is hot on its heels, and it’s up to the player to navigate the ship through hostile territory, upgrade its parts, and recruit new crew members along the way.
It’s ridiculously easy to die in this roguelite game developed by Subset Games. The number of missiles targeted towards the ship can be overwhelming at times. But the challenges in FTL make it thrilling, too, as players have to fend enemies off while making sure that the ship’s essential systems are intact.
6 Crypt of the NecroDancer
This unique roguelite game lets players defeat enemies with the power of dance. Developed by Brace Yourself Games, it’s essentially a rhythm game where the player must time attacks with the music playing in the background.
If that sounds difficult, that’s because it is! Although NecroDancer is a great rhythm game for beginners, it still takes some skill to master the gameplay. The music, composed by Danny Baranowsky, is designed to become more complex the deeper the player gets into the crypt. While it does take some time to get into a groove, the actual story and combat are impressive and fun to get through. Players who want to take it a step further can also ditch their console and opt to use a dance pad.
5 Enter the Gungeon
Developed by Dodge Roll, Enter the Gungeon takes players on a wild adventure through a dungeon full of guns. Its procedurally-generated levels have enemies like anthropomorphized bullets and gunpowder with a face. The adventurers’ goal in the game is to find the holy grail weapon, which is a gun that can kill the past.
Players have to shoot their way through goofy-looking enemies to reach this ultimate gun. The often funny dungeon bosses in Enter the Gungeon are surprisingly challenging to battle. Defeating these bosses and finishing the roguelite will take a lot of skill, guns, and dodge rolls.
4 The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth
The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is a remake of the original 2011 game designed by Edmund McMillen. The remake’s plot is faithful to the original and is inspired by McMillen’s religious upbringing. The RPG revolves around the story of Isaac who must escape his evil mother and go through scary dungeons with dangerous creatures.
The game’s dark story about how Isaac’s mother wants to sacrifice him extends into the gameplay itself. Players can use Isaac’s tears as projectiles and disfigure his naked body to gain new skills. Rebirth’s often creepy and sometimes comedic approach to the genre makes it one of the more interesting roguelites to experience.
3 Monster Train
This deck-building game developed by Shiny Shoe takes players on a unique train ride full of invaders to defeat. Players are in control of cards that can summon monsters who will defend the pyre from the enemies. There are four floors to get through, and on each one, players must strategize and react to current invaders while preparing for the next ones.
With more than 200 cards and even more upgrades to choose from, the possibilities in Monster Train are endless. Each playthrough feels novel thanks to this plethora of combinations, which is the hallmark of an excellent roguelite.
2 Dead Cells
In the Metroidvania-style action-platformer, Dead Cells, players control a corpse that must fight through stunning monster-filled dungeons. Each random level contains some information about the lore behind the game and gives players clues about the overarching story. The developers from Motion Twin also introduce the now-iconic in-game currency, “cells,” early in the game. These can be spent on weapons, health, upgrade, and more on each level.
The actual gameplay encourages players to be reckless, as the smooth combat mechanics and multi-kill bonuses make it fun to speed through the game. Of course, this means permadeath is unavoidable and happens more often than some players may expect. However, death in the game does not come with the usual frustration that roguelite fans are familiar with, as each new game brings new weapons, abilities, skins, and power-ups. The “Keepers” or bosses within the dungeons are extremely difficult to defeat, so players will get a lot of hours and thrilling battles out of the game.
1 Hades
Developed by Supergiant Games, Hades features recognizable characters from Greek mythology and weaves a story about family and redemption. One of the best modern mythology retellings, Hades features gods like Ares and Athena. The player controls Zagreus, Hades’ son, as he fights his way out of the underworld to find answers about his past and change his future.
With the Boons and Infernal Arms in the game, players must wade through the endless array of lost souls that are hellbent on killing Zagreus. As it is a roguelite, the enemies often win, which sends the player back to his father’s palace where he can prepare to start over again. The interesting story, engaging gameplay, and multitude of items to uncover in the game make it an ideal representation of the genre.
