These amazing sci-fi movies have been made all the better by their badass female lead characters.

The film industry is getting better all the time when it comes to shaking up the male-dominated nature of most movies. One genre that has particularly suffered from being catered to men, for the most part, over the years is the sci-fi genre. It’s a bit absurd to think of how many sci-fi films are comprised solely of men in the lead positions.
This is especially true when considering how high-quality sci-fi movies with female leads are! Because some of the best sci-fi films of all-time come from stories headed by female protagonists, one would think that the balance would have evened out by now. While there’s still work to be done, these ten films show the strides made already.
10 A Wrinkle In Time
First up on the list is A Wrinkle in Time. Back when it was released in 2018, Ava DuVernay’s sci-fi adventure epic for Disney was met with critical vitriol. However, this criticism is entirely unfair.
It’s a story with a massive heart that embraces unabashed themes of togetherness, love, and human connection. Throw in some fun supporting turns from Mindy Kaling, Reese Witherspoon, and Chris Pine and A Wrinkle in Time is a ton of fun. Plus, Storm Reid as Meg Murry is an all-time great sci-fi child performance!
9 Annihilation
One of the most exciting sci-fi filmmakers working today is Alex Garland, who followed up his breakout hit, Ex Machina, with the 2018 female-led Annihilation.
Starring Natalie Portman as Lena (and rounding out the main cast with Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, and Tessa Thompson), Annihilation centers around the story of “The Shimmer” and the explorers who enter it to investigate alien potential. It’s thrilling and underrated and Portman is a revelation in it.
8 The Shape Of Water
The Shape of Water is the rare sci-fi movie that actually won Best Picture at the Oscars. Reduced to the tagline of the “fish sex movie,” The Shape of Water is still one of Guillermo del Toro’s best films.
The lead of the film is Elisa Esposito, a mute cleaner in the lab that houses the humanoid lizard she falls in love with. Sally Hawkins plays Elisa to perfection and she even received a nomination for Best Actress for the performance.
7 The Invisible Man
Like Annihilation, The Invisible Man (the newest film on the list, having been released this past February) has as much horror in the mix as it does sci-fi. By updating the original H.G. Wells tale to depict the “Invisible Man” as using technology, Leigh Whannell’s sci-fi horror movie feels as relevant as can be.
The best part of the movie is absolutely Elisabeth Moss’ performance, though. The world already knows that Moss is one of the best living performers, but this just cemented it even further.
6 Aliens
When people think of female-led sci-fi movies, Aliens is usually one of the first that comes to mind. The sequel to Ridley Scott’s Alien (more on that later), James Cameron’s horror-turned-action take on the franchise remains one of cinema’s best sequels.
That’s partly because of the mind-blowing action sequences in the movie, but it’s also due to Sigourney Weaver’s performance. She carries the entire movie to the point that she received an Oscar nomination for her turn. It’s a seminal moment in sci-fi history.
5 The Hunger Games
The entire Hunger Games franchise is pretty solid and remains one of the best book-to-film adaptations in the young adult/dystopia genre. Jennifer Lawrence’s performance as Katniss Everdeen is such a flawless, star-making endeavor.
The first Hunger Games film remains the best of the four, though. Granted, Catching Fire is right there behind it, but there was nothing like watching Gary Ross’ 2012 rendition unfold for the first time.
4 Gravity
Alfonso Cuarón’s 2013 sci-fi space thriller Gravity was a massive success. It earned hundreds of million at the box office and dominated the Oscars. The concept was pure in conception (a woman gets stranded in space and has no control of her direction) and executed to perfection.
The cast is very slimmed down with George Clooney and Sandra Bullock anchoring the majority of the film. But it’s Bullock who is the dominant force in the movie. Her astronaut doctor, Ryan Stone, is easy to empathize with and root for throughout her twisting efforts above the Earth.
3 Star Wars: The Last Jedi
The first crop of Star Wars films centered around characters like Luke Skywalker and Han Solo as the leads with Princess Leia playing a supporting part. That began to change with Disney’s era of Star Wars, as Rogue One starred Felicity Jones at the helm.
The best female-led Star Wars film is absolutely The Last Jedi, though. Not only is the film itself a daring and innovative take on the revered franchise, but it also revolves around Daisy Ridley’s Rey. One of the best characters in recent memory, Rey hit her peak in Rian Johnson’s sequel.
2 Arrival
Not only is Arrival one of the best sci-fi films of the century, but it’s also the greatest linguistic movie of all-time. Directed by Denis Villeneuve, Arrival deals with aliens coming to Earth by evaluating it through the lens of immense heart and family.
This comes courtesy of Amy Adams in the lead role. Adams is always an underrated performer and she carries Arrival to its highly emotional conclusion. Her Louise Banks character conjures up so much empathy and so many tears by the film’s conclusion.
1 Alien
After including Aliens, there was no doubt that Alien would be featured, too. Alien has to be considered the greatest sci-fi movie with a female lead of all-time.
Ridley Scott’s 1979 sci-fi horror film about alien-hunting astronauts on the Nostromo vessel is haunting and thrilling in equal measure. But Ripley is the one who anchors the film throughout. Weaver cemented herself as one of the big screen’s best talents through this performance, which she even won a BAFTA award for. 41 years later, Alien remains the gold standard.
