The beauty of gaming lies in the simple fact that there is something for everybody. For people wanting to get lost for uncountable hours in a virtual world far far away, there are open-world RPGs such as Skyrim and Witcher 3, and for those who yearn for a more cinematic experience, there are story-driven games like The Last Of Us. Big-time developers try to load as much as they can into a game, as they intend to get players to spend as much time on their product as possible.

On the other hand, most indie games are relatively smaller in size and can be seen as bite-sized adventures, suited best for those who don’t have an abundance of free time to spare. For their convenience, these are just a few games that can be certainly finished within a day.

10 What Remains of Edith Finch (2017): Approximately 2 Hours

Since its founding in 2016, Annapurna Games (a sub-division of Annapurna Pictures) have published some highly acclaimed indie games which are all more artistically beautiful than the other, and What Remains of Edith Finch is one of their biggest hits yet.

At the center of the story is the titular Finch family, and the strange phenomenon that surrounds them. Except for one person, everybody else in the family of each generation ends up dead in one way or another. For those who don’t believe video games can be a form of art too, this is the answer.

9 Firewatch (2016): Approximately 4 Hours

Firewatch puts the player in the shoes of a park ranger working at a certain national forest, which is actually a lot more entertaining than it sounds. Like many other indie games, the game’s narrative is its strongest point, made even more so by the fact that gameplay-wise, there is little to do except walk around and talk with a character named Delilah through a walkie-talkie.

Underneath its simple premise is a bigger mystery at work, and the experience of getting to the end of the story is an atmospheric and lonely one, which is part of the charm really.

8 ABZÛ (2016): Approximately 2 Hours

For people who have always wanted to go on an underwater adventure but never got the chance, ABZÛ presents the experience in its full beauty. Subnautica is a more famous member of this niche category of video games, but ABZÛ comes with the advantage of being very short in length.

But in that short span of time, players get to explore a world that is vibrant and full of (marine) life like no other. Chilling with fishes isn’t the only thing to do though, as there are mysteries to be uncovered as well.

7 Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons (2013): Approximately 3 Hours

As the title so straightforwardly says, the game tells the tale of two brothers on a journey to obtain a certain special type of water from a place called the Tree of Life, which they need to cure their ill father.

The unique gameplay makes the player control two characters at once (a controller is compulsory to play) as they solve various puzzles and cross many obstacles together. The Switch version of the game allowed for a fun co-op experience with a friend (or perhaps a brother) as well, while on the other platforms it is strictly single-player.

6 A Short Hike (2019): Approximately 1.5 Hours

Developed by a one-man team (Adam Robinson-Yu), A Short Hike takes players on a journey worthy of its name, as it involves plenty of hiking and can be finished in a matter of hours. The protagonist Claire is a young bird visiting her aunt at the Hawk Peak Provincial Park. Cell phone reception at the park is poor except for at its highest point, called Hawk Peak, and the premise of the game revolves around Claire trying to reach the top of the hill.

It’s not just a glorified mountain climbing simulator, as there are numerous other side activities to do as well that involve interacting with other animals.

5 Inside (2016): Approximately 3.5 Hours

Few games express the feeling of a dark and dystopian setting as subtly and yet clearly as Inside. At no point is the player made aware of what is actually going on in the world of Inside, but the sinister and depressing aura present at all times is impossible to ignore.

The visuals are like nothing else, monochromatic for the most part, mixing the classic 2D side-scrolling platform style gameplay with unique 3D animations. Limbo, the spiritual predecessor of Inside from the same developer, shares many of the same characteristics.

4 Donut County (2017): Approximately 2 Hours

Some games let the player play as humans, some as aliens, some as animals (particularly geese or goats). In Donut County the player is a literal hole in the ground that needs to grow in size by “eating” things available in the surrounding area.

To clear the levels, every object on the map needs to be devoured, which is not nearly as easy as it sounds, as there are some puzzling sequences to be solved. There is even a plot, featuring a talking raccoon named BK who runs a donut shop with his friend Mira.

3 Portal (2007): Approximately 3 Hours

Having created games like Left 4 Dead and Half-Life, few studios have been as influential in the PC gaming industry as Valve, and Steam is considered the go-to place for buying PC games. Portal is seen as a pioneer in terms of puzzle-platformers, and its gameplay still holds up today 14 years after being released, which certainly makes it worthy of a recommendation.

Player’s are handed a “portal gun” that can create traversable portals that can connect any two places together, which makes for some crazy fun and creative puzzle-solving.

2 Superhot (2016): Approximately 2.5 Hours

The tagline for the game reads “time moves only when you do”, and that’s as good as a description of the game as any.

Players are confined in a restrained scenario and have to deal with several enemies who are shooting at them. The fun part is that enemies (and the bullets) only move when the player does. This makes for a smart brain exercise where it needs to be decided exactly when to move and how, as the wrong step will likely result in instantaneous death in this fast but also not fast-paced FPS.

1 The Darkside Detective (2017): Approximately 3.5 Hours

Pixel games have found new life in recent years, as people have come to appreciate the aesthetic even more, and it has become the go-to style for many indie developers.

A detective story set in the fictional city of Twin Lakes, this point-and-click adventure game is bound to take players back to the late 90s era of gaming. The soundtrack is awesome to boot, and the game even makes funny pop-culture references all the time. The names of cases that are to be solved are a good example, such as “Malice in Wonderland”, “Tome Alone”, and more.
