10 Web Therapy (6.6/10)
Lisa Kudrow’s beautifully, simple, offbeat, and completely improvised comedy web series was originally found on LStudio.com. Kudrow starred as Fiona Wallice, a self-centered therapist who conducts therapy sessions via Skype.
Showtime adapted the single-camera web series into a fully-fledged television series in 2010 and packed it with savvy comedic guest stars like Julia Louise-Dreyfus, Rashida Jones, Lily Tomlin, and more.
9 Children’s Hospital (7.8/10)
Dark comedy Children’s Hospital has found success on Adult Swim since it aired in 2010, but before it reached this milestone, it achieved popularity on a now-defunct Warner Brothers streaming website called TheWB.com.
Originally a ten-episode program with five-minute episodes, Children’s Hospital gained a lot of regard on the site as a medical drama parody, and it was picked up by Adult Swim just a year after it first began streaming.
8 Portlandia (7.8/10)
This popular sketch comedy was born out of a web series project from Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein originally called ThunderAnt. Their collaborative internet sketches weren’t Portland-specific from the beginning but became more so as they got into playing more exaggerated, eccentric hipster characters.
A few of these ThunderAnt characters – like Women & Women First’s Candace and Toni – carried over into Portlandia after Armisen and Brownstein successfully pitched the idea to IFC.
7 Drunk History (7.8/10)
With a hilariously original concept, Drunk History is an educational comedy that quickly outgrew its original residence at Funny or Die and has enjoyed continued success on Comedy Central.
The idea behind the web series and television show first came to be when show creator Derek Waters was drinking with actor Jake Johnson. Johnson was attempting to talk to Waters about the life of R&B artist Otis Redding but struggling due to being intoxicated. Waters thought it would be funny to film other drunk people discussing historical figures and events – and thus Drunk History was born.
6 Insecure (7.9/10)
Originally known as YouTube’s Awkward Black Girl, Insecure follows Molly (Yvonne Orji) and Issa (Issa Rae) as they navigate daily life, awkward and uncomfortable situations with their friends, love interests, and co-workers.
Series creator Issa Rae was inspired to create the series after dealing with awkward situations in her real life and realizing that a lot of television shows didn’t present the black female perspective. Awkward Black Girl originally had a single protagonist named J who largely dealt with similar awkward situations as Insecure’s Molly and Issa.
Rae’s project quickly gained traction through social media and word-of-mouth. Rae and her producer were then able to finance it with a successful Kickstarter campaign. Insecure has since found a home on HBO from 2015 to the present and will end on its fifth and final season after much success and critical acclaim.
5 Ugly Americans (8.0/10)
Ugly Americans began as 5 On With Alan Whiter, which was launched in 2009 on Comedy Central’s website “CC Studios” and streamed on Vimeo. The web series had a man-on-the-street interview format where the host, Alan Whiter, would interview various demons and other ghoulish beings on current events and issues.
5 On With Alan Whiter was poised for success from the start – written by John Mulaney, Nick Kroll, Pete Holmes, developed by The Simpsons writer David M. Stern, and directed and animated by Devin Clark. Clark would go on to create Ugly Americans after Comedy Central picked it up in 2009.
Ugly Americans takes place in the same universe as 5 On With Alan Whiter. The series is centered on a social worker in New York City – where there are mythical creatures, monsters, and magic beings living alongside humans.
4 Adam Ruins Everything (8.0/10)
This educational comedy rose to prominence on CollegeHumor’s website before finding a home on TruTV. The show has a loose storyline but mainly focuses on sketches within the episode explaining a misconception or debunking a myth.
Adam Conover serves as the show’s knowledgeable and sometimes pestiferous host, usually butting into the lives of other recurring characters to educate them on common misconceptions. While Conover often frustrates the other characters, the episodes usually end with a positive spin. In late 2020, Conover revealed an upcoming Netflix project called The G Word With Adam Conover and announced that Adam Ruins Everything had been concluded after enjoying success both on television and the web.
3 Burning Love (8.0/10)
There are many great web series and television series that spoof reality TV, like Facebook’s The Real Bros Of Simi Valley and Hulu’s Hotwives Of Orlando. Burning Love became both a web series and television series once it gained popularity lampooning shows like The Bachelor.
Originally premiering on a video hosting site called Yahoo! Screen, Burning Love was created by Erica Oyama. Her partner Ken Marino produced, directed and starred in the series while Ben Stiller served as the executive producer.
In 2013, Burning Love moved to E!, and the 12-minute webisodes become 20 minute long episodes, featuring actors and comedians such as Nick Kroll, Kerri Kenney-Silver, Adam Scott, Kristen Bell, and various others.
2 High Maintenance (8.2/10)
High Maintenance had humble beginnings as a 2012 Vimeo web series before getting picked up by HBO in 2016. The comedy-drama was created by Ben Sinclair and Katja Blitchfeld and is partially based on Sinclair’s real-life experiences.
With a protagonist only known as “The Guy,” High Maintenance gives the viewer a window into the lives of random New Yorkers interacting with the nameless main character. While the series ended in 2020, all four seasons are available on HBO GO, and the original web series can still be found on Vimeo.
1 Broad City (8.4/10)
One of the most well-known internet-to-television success stories, Broad City started out on YouTube back in 2009 and is based on the real-life friendship of Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer. The duo met at the Upright Citizens Brigade and acted in a couple of improv sketch comedy groups together – along with Paul W. Downs and Lucia Aniello – who would each go on to direct and produce Broad City.
Amy Poehler came across their YouTube channel and even guest-starred in a webisode as they were filming nearby her residence in New York. Poehler acted as both a mentor and executive producer and helped them pitch Broad City to Comedy Central. The show would go on to be considered one of the best sitcoms of the 2010s.
