Side characters are not often in the limelight and do not often alter the course of a sitcom, but their brilliance lies in what they bring to make a show more lovable or to propel the trajectory of the main characters. Although side characters are not always extensively explored during the course of a show, the writers in most sitcoms have a clear idea of what the purpose of such characters is.

By leaving a lot of things unanswered about these characters, writers are able to be flexible about their portrayal during the course of the show, especially the ones that span the course of more than five or six seasons.

10 Jerry Gergich – Parks And Recreation

Jerry Gergich is called by different names by the other characters in Parks and Recreation, which include Garry, Larry, and Terry. He is a long-time City Council employee working in the Parks Department of the city of Pawnee. Often taunted, pranked, and mocked by his colleagues, Jerry takes joy in doing mundane and repetitive jobs.

Fans of the show like the humor he brings to the show, and they especially love the pranks pulled on him by April and Tom.

9 Gunther – Friends

Gunther works at the Central Perk Cafe in Friends and he was Rachel’s coworker. He has a secret crush on Rachel for much of the show and this is reflected in his seemingly open hatred of Ross. He finally confesses his love towards Rachel in the final episode of season 10 when she is departing for Paris.

Fans will remember him for his jealousy-filled exchanges with Ross. It was Gunther who reveals to Rachel that Ross had sex with another woman while they were “on a break.” He even bans Ross from hanging flyers in Central Perk.

8 Dr. Berkowitz – One Day At A Time

Dr. Berkowitz is Penelope’s boss at the clinic in One Day At A Time. In the show, viewers can see how Dr. Berkowitz becomes an integral part of the Alvarez family as the show progresses. His dynamic with Lydia is presented in a very humorous manner and is much appreciated by the fans.

He is very understanding and has assisted the Alvarez family in different instances, be it to relax Penelope’s workload during her college hours or teaching Elena driving. He is very generous and kind and caring.

7 Ranjit – How I Met Your Mother

Ranjit is a limousine chauffeur in New York City in How I Met Your Mother, who Barney introduces to the other main characters in the show. He has several appearances in the show and is known for his classic “Hello!”

He is quite close with the group of friends and, in one instance, he even shares drinks with them at the McLaren’s Bar. He is a trusted aide of Barney’s and they both share a close bond, but he also shouts at him when he learns that he slept with Robin and even calls him a traitor.

6 Roland Schitt – Schitt’s Creek

Roland is the Mayor of the fictional town of Schitt’s Creek in the show of the same name. Fans like him for his eccentric behavior, but the Roses first don’t appreciate it, as they see him as unnecessarily prying in their domestic affairs.

But over the course of the show, Roland and his wife get very close with the Rose family to become close aides of each other in the town, even when Roland’s gross and often very inappropriate behavior is looked down upon by the Roses. He partners with Johnny to run the motel later in the series.

5 Kevin Malone – The Office

Kevin is a sloppy accountant at the Scranton branch of Dunder Mifflin Paper Company in The Office. He lacks even the most basic accounting knowledge and is often ridiculed by his co-accountants, Angela and Oscar.

He is probably best remembered for the scene in which he drops a huge box full of his homemade “Kevin’s Famous Chili”. He even claims that cooking that chili is the best thing he does. He is notoriously known for his inappropriate and offensive remarks directed towards Angela and Pam.

4 Jean Ralphio – Parks And Recreation

Jean Ralphio is Tom’s friend and a business partner in Parks and Recreation. He is introduced as a funny and quirky character who speaks and spontaneously raps.

Tom and Jean discuss a lot of business ideas and they finally start an entertainment company named Entertainment 720, which quickly runs out of cash due to their extravagant spending. He is a very funny character whose dialogue is based on normal conversations but always has an added quirkiness.

3 Janice – Friends

Possibly one of the most loved and hated characters in a sitcom, Janice from Friends has a special place in the hearts of fans of the show. A former lover of Chandler, Janice has many appearances in the show and keeps falling for him. Chandler never really loved Janice, and always tries to avoid any contact with her, but somehow always ends up meeting her.

She is best remembered for her signature expression, “Oh My God” with her particularly nasal voice. The friends find her unbearable due to how irritating she is, but she is also depicted to be caring, especially when she helps Rachel get through her labor pains.

2 Hitchcock & Scully – Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Hitchcock and Scully are longtime detectives working in the Nine-Nine Precinct of the NYPD in the show Brooklyn Nine-Nine. They are known for their lethargic nature and their easy-going attitude at work. They are very close friends and never shy away from expressing their affection for each other, which fans of the show just adore.

They are always seen together in the show and as Hitchcock himself says, they “are a package deal.” Their quirky and gross moments in the show are a highlight and they are considered two of the most well-written and funny side characters ever seen in a sitcom.

1 Creed Bratton – The Office

The ever mysterious and little-known employee of the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company, Creed Bratton from The Office is definitely a strong contender for the top position as the best sitcom side character. Despite his weird and out-of-place dialogue, Creed actually makes a lot of sense and even has a separate fanbase that supports his bizarreness.

He confesses from time to time to have an extensive criminal background and to being involved in a lot of illegal and outlandish activities. It is revealed that he never really secured a job at the company, but rather just started working there by chance. He now works as the quality assurance manager and it is a big puzzle as to how he is able to sustain his position there.
