George Lucas’ THX 1138 is of a subgenre that is often overlooked in cinema – social science fiction. Such works concern themselves with the exploration of the way society works, rather than the technology used in it. THX 1138 does feature some technology, but it is more focused on the structure of the dystopian society presented in it.

Indeed, this focus on societal order is what made THX 1138 a cult classic despite its poor reception upon release. Some similar sci-fi movies that explore society have fewer social sci-fi elements (such as Gattaca), while others focus way more on this aspect of their stories, which is why fans of Lucas’ creation will definitely enjoy them.

Adapted from a French graphic novel, it depicts a world where climate change has led to the planet freezing and the surviving humans end up on a constantly moving train known as Snowpiercer. The lower class from the tail section decides to start an uprising to overthrow the higher class in the sections closer to the front of the train.

Based on the classic dystopian social science novel, 1984 was a critical success, which was in part a result of the faithfulness of the adaptation. Interestingly, the movie was released in 1984, with some of the scenes specifically shot on the dates in the original novel.

The movie that propelled Jennifer Lawrence to stardom, The Hunger Games may be made for teenagers, but it is actually an enjoyable watch for adults too (as is its sequel). Based on the novel of the same name, it is set in a dystopian future in the nation of Panem ruled from the Capitol. Panem is divided into 12 districts populated by working-class citizens that supply the Capitol where the elites reside. The poorest of these is District 12, where the main heroine, Katniss Everdeen, lives with her mother and younger sister. Every year, a boy and a girl are chosen from each district to compete as tributes in the deadly Hunger Games. After Katniss’s sister is chosen, Katniss volunteers instead of her and must now survive the Games.

Directed by the highly influential Francois Truffaut, Fahrenheit 451 is also an adaptation of a classic novel. Interestingly, this was Truffaut’s first color movie and only non-French-language work.

Set in a dystopian future in a society oppressed by the government, the movie depicts a world where a special force known as the Firemen are sent out by the government to destroy literature preventing people from thinking and, thus, from starting a revolution.

Yet another book adaptation, The Time Machine is based on H.G. Wells’ novella of the same name, which was quite influential on the sci-fi genre as a whole. The story follows a Victorian-era inventor who creates a time machine and travels into the future. Once there, he finds himself in a society where humankind has divided into two different species – one that is vegetarian and immature and another one that feeds on the former.

Alfonso Cuaron’s Children of Men is one of the most recent social sci-fi movies that is particularly impressive for its single-shot action sequences. The movie explores such themes as hope, faith, and redemption, while also centering on such topics as immigration and fertility.

Adapted from the novel of the same name, it takes place in 2027 in the UK. Humanity has experienced two decades of infertility, which has led society to an unsolvable crisis. Replicants are used as slave labor, so when a group of them rebels and escapes to Earth, an officer from a special police force known as the Blade Runner is sent to “retire” them.

Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange is known for its particularly violent scenes, but it has also been praised for its commentary on such social topics, such as juvenile delinquency, psychiatry, youth gangs, and others.

Based on the novel of the same name, it is set in a dystopian version of Britain and follows a group of young delinquents who engage in activities known as “ultra-violence” that include rape and theft, among other things.
