When it comes to Spider-Man villains, the alien symbiote Venom is a clear fan-favorite. Almost any storyline featuring the juggernaut antagonist is bound to be epic. Since his introduction into Spider-Man’s canon way back in 1984, Venom has taken on the web-slinger plenty of times and even joined him side-by-side on the rare occasion.
Despite Venom’s few examples of morality, he’s mainly known for being a vicious monster and a thorn in the side of Peter Parker. Over the years, the two have taken part in some jaw-dropping fights that have made them one of the best rivalries in all of Marvel Comics. So, without further ado, let’s take a look at 10 of the greatest Spider-Man/Venom tilts from their extremely rich history.
10 Amazing Spider-Man #300
It only makes sense to start at the beginning. Although the black Spider-Man suit was introduced back in Amazing Spider-Man #252, Venom’s first full appearance wasn’t until 48 issues later. In the treasured 300th issue, Peter Parker finally clashes with the venomized Eddie Brock to duel for the first time.
The two face off in their first epic fight, which ultimately ends in Venom’s defeat. Their first fight also leads to Venom and Eddie Brock’s capture and eventual imprisonment in the Vault. Amazing Spider-Man #300 officially kicked off the twisted rivalry that has filled pages for decades.
9 Spider-Man #52
Just because Peter Parker is most well-known for taking on Venom, it doesn’t mean that other versions of Spider-Man haven’t also had violent meetings with the symbiote. That brings us to Ben Rielly, otherwise known as the Scarlet Spider.
The two engage in a serious deathmatch that nearly brings us the demise of Reilly. Just as the Spider Clone is on his knees at the mercy of Venom, the female symbiote Shriek steps in to take on Brock. Although Venom is dealt with, for the time being, it is far from the last time Venom and the Scarlet Spider come face-to-face in this storyline.
8 Amazing Spider-Man #347
Amazing Spider-Man #347 brings us one of the more unorthodox battles between Peter Parker and Venom. While the two usually clash across the streets of New York, this time they meet on a tropical island. Venom states he’s brought Spider-Man here as their battles in the city are typically interrupted.
The island fight sees the two trade blows until Peter finally escapes Venom for a quick breather. Realizing that his only chance to survive this island is to trick the symbiote, Peter disguises a skeleton in his suit and fakes his own death. Brock and Venom fall for it, thinking they’ve defeated Spider-Man and thus separate for the foreseeable future.
7 Spider-Man 2099 Meets Spider-Man #1
Like we mentioned above, Peter Parker is far from the only Spider-Man to take on Eddie Brock’s Venom. Miguel O’Hara found himself taking on the symbiote when he is transported to the present era, seemingly switching positions with Peter Parker.
As he tries to understand what has happened, Miguel is attacked by Venom. Their mainly airborne fight doesn’t last very long, as Eddie Brock is scared away by the appearance of the Avengers. Spider-Man 2099 Meets Spider-Man was an incredible spider-verse crossover that added a new layer to the Spider-Man versus Venom lineage.
6 Venom: Dark Origin
Zeb Wells’ 2008 Venom: Dark Origin gave us a new look at the emergence of the infamous character, bringing together Eddie Brock and the symbiote in a new light. By the time the fifth issue rolls around, we’re finally given the full-blown Spider-Man and Venom fight we’d been waiting for.
Donning his black suit, Peter takes the fight to Venom in one of the more brutal clashes we’ve seen between the two. After a long battle, Spider-Man is eventually able to sever the tie between Eddie and the symbiote, who find themselves both in the custody of the Fantastic Four’s sonic wave trap. The fight in Venom: Dark Origin showcased not only how bitter the rivalry between Peter Parker and Eddie Brock is, but also how the symbiote has always truly longed to reattach with Peter.
5 Ultimate Spider-Man #38
Now, in every fight we’ve covered up to this point, Peter Parker as Spider-Man has been wearing one of his two signature suits. You have to wonder though, what would it be like it he faced off against Venom without his suit on? Well, look no further. In Brian Michael Bendis’ run of Ultimate Spider-Man, we finally see what would happen if Peter was up against his symbiote nemesis in his street clothes, without the use of his web-shooters.
The incredible scenes of Peter Parker taking on Venom in Ultimate Spider-Man #38 is unlike any battle we’ve ever seen between the two. The fight essentially lasts the entire issue and shows Peter thinking of innovative ways to hold off Venom without his typical spidey powers. It’s one of the more unique bouts between the two you’ll see and was easily a highlight of the entire 200-issue storyline.
4 Spider-Man 3
It felt obligatory that we include Spider-Man and Venom’s only big-screen fight on this list. Most of you are likely familiar with the famous Raimi trilogy and especially the third and final film that brought the symbiote and Eddie Brock to life.
The fight that closes out the movie is a cinematic beauty and something any Spider-Man fan had been longing since the first Spider-Man film. Hopefully, as the likely crossover of Spider-Man and Venom in either the MCU or Sony “Venom-verse” gains momentum, we get to see a new take on a live-action fight between Peter Park and Eddie Brock.
3 Amazing Spider-Man #316
The true power of both Spider-Man and Venom is no secret. When the two clash, it’s always a heavyweight bout that typically results in one beating the pulp out of the other. That trend is certainly evident in one of the earlier fights between them that took place in David Michelinie and Todd McFarlane’s Amazing Spider-Man #316.

After beating up Black Cat while hunting down information on Spider-Man’s whereabouts, Venom finally lures Peter into a fight. The two battle inside a meatpacking plant, where Venom dumps a vat of blood on Spider-Man. Sent into a panic, Peter is able to knock down his enemy with machinery and escape. Since things ended prematurely and with Venom learning of Peter’s new address, the fight eventually spilled into the following issue.
2 DC/Marvel All Access #1
Fighting Venom doesn’t always have to be just a one-man job. Every now and again it’s fair that Spider-Man should get some help when taking down the monstrous symbiote. In terms of the best to help him take down his longtime enemy, who could possibly be a bigger help than the Man of Steel?
As strange as it may sound, there was once a time when Spider-Man and Superman joined forces to take on Venom. DC/Marvel All Access #1 was the first installment in a four-part crossover miniseries that brought together the heroes of the Marvel and DC universes. You’d think with the powers of Spider-Man and Superman working side-by-side that Venom would go down without a fight, but he surprisingly holds his own against two of the most iconic superheroes.
1 Venom: Space Knight #11
Robbie Thompson’s Venom: Space Knight follows the Flash Thompson version of Venom traveling the cosmos as an intergalactic agent and even Guardian of the Galaxy after bonding with the symbiote. However, in his travels, he manages to make his way back to his home planet of Earth where he reconnects with an old friend.
The 11th issue of the story brings us one of the most visually-stunning 10-page fights you’ll ever see between Spider-Man and Venom. We see Peter Parker use a variety of flashy new technology to try and cage the symbiote and free his former classmate Flash. This gorgeous brawl is unlike anything you’ve ever seen between the two characters and truly delivers on what a Spider-Man/Venom fight should be.
