10 Best Supporting Characters In Family Guy Ranked

Throughout the show’s two-decade run, Family Guy has seen its fair share of wacky cartoon pals. From doctors to news anchors, to ship captains, Quahog is definitely packed to the brim with fresh faces. As the show has gone on, a lot of these secondary characters have had entire episodes centered on them (with some going as far as getting their own show), and a lot of them have developed cult followings.

These are the ten best, funniest, and most memorable supporting characters on Family Guy. Basically, anyone without the last name Griffin was considered for this list. Also, no characters who have only appeared once, they have to be somewhat recurring.

10 Death

“I asked for Advil. But, you know, whatever. That’s good.” Death first appeared in episode six of season two, “Death is a B**ch.” Voiced by Norm MacDonald (who’s probably the best version of the character), he’s just trying to do his job until he gets injured. Death is a sarcastic, pop culture-savvy entity that seems to cross paths with the Griffins constantly.

His subsequent appearances after that were not as strong, due to Adam Corolla missing MacDonald’s cold wit, though there are plenty of great bits that prove he is an excellent character.

9 Carl

This convenience store manager is probably the most underused character, considering how funny he is. Voiced by veteran voice actor H. Jon Benjamin (Archer, Home Movies, Bob’s Burgers), this guy loves movies and, more importantly, nudity in movies. He and Chris love talking about films all the time, whether it’s stuff like Krull, Event Horizon, Cruel Intentions, or Lord of the Rings. Benjamin’s performance is among the best in the series and Carl really deserves more love from the writers.

He was also Yoda in one of the Family Guy Star Wars parodies, which he would thank Brian for.

8 Rupert

Stewie’s Teddy Bear may be inanimate but he’s probably the most developed character in all of Family Guy. Throughout the years, we have seen Rupert grow to be Stewie’s main confidant, sharing most of his secrets, confessions, and random conversation. He is clearly Stewie’s best friend and most consistent source of companionship.

They also seem to have a bizarre, psychosexual relationship, where Stewie is usually angry at him. The best bits come from cutaways showing Rupert as a muscular man with the head of a teddy bear, further developing him into more than a toy.

7 Dr. Hartman

10 Best Supporting Characters In Family Guy Ranked

Imagine if Dr. Nick from The Simpsons was somehow worse. Dr. Elmer Hartman is the Griffin family doctor, being there for the family’s medical needs. Known in the earlier season for some great misdirection, his incompetence knows no bounds (he had to figure out how to tell Joe he was paralyzed from the waist down, despite knowing that for years).

His Yale Medical school degree is a product of his great calligraphy skills, he constantly needs to be reminded to do his job, and seems to be at odds with the law. Oh well, at least he got that liver out of the microwave.

6 Bruce (And Any Other Character With His Voice)

10 Best Supporting Characters In Family Guy Ranked

“Oh no!” This soft-spoken resident of Quahog has been seen holding down various jobs around town. He’s worked at bowling, as a referee, a CPR coach, and even on the school board during PTA meetings. Bruce’s distinct voice and slow-paced delivery is now iconic, with his voice being used on other characters.

He has voiced a giant bee, a mutant rat, a Xenomorph from Aliens, the shark from Jaws, and was even Greedo in Star Wars. He lives with his partner Jeffery, though he is waiting for his mom to die so they can finally marry.

5 Cleveland

10 Best Supporting Characters In Family Guy Ranked

Cleveland Brown is one of Peter’s closest friends. Soft-spoken, sensible, and cultured, Cleavland acts as the voice of reason to Peter’s antics, often putting up with most of the blowback. Case in point: Peter has found a way to knock Cleveland from his bathtub in the iconic “no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no” bit.

Cleveland was also the only one to get a spin-off. While it was canceled after four seasons, his return to Quahog was met with insults from the guys about the quality of The Cleveland Show and how Seth MacFarland left the show during season three. Brutal.

4 Glenn Quagmire

10 Best Supporting Characters In Family Guy Ranked

Yes, Quagmire definitely supplies some of the most unnecessary, problematic humor in series history. Despite that, the non-problematic stuff shines just as well. Quagmire has evolved throughout the show’s run. He is shown to have Japanese roots and speaks it perfectly. He also loves cats, most notably by his now-deceased cat James, who he would parade around and treat like a son.

Quagmire is also a great pilot and has one of the more developed backstories in the show. He dated actress Cheryl Tiegs, was in the navy, and is actually 61 years old, thanks to carrots.

3 Mayor Adam West

10 Best Supporting Characters In Family Guy Ranked

“I love this job more than I love taffy, and I’m a man who loves his taffy.” Adam West plays a fictional version of himself as the wacky neighbor of Quahog. He has odd outbursts and some of the strangest mannerisms ever. He is also shown to be a terrible mayor, squandering town funds on a gold statue of Diggem’ the Sugar Smacks mascot, tries to exact revenge on the ocean by stabbing the water, rolls around in nuclear waste to gain superpowers and even thinks someone is trying to steal his water as it goes down the drain.

2 Carter Pewterschmidt

10 Best Supporting Characters In Family Guy Ranked

Lois’s billionaire father is a grumpy old conservative man with a disdain for Peter. He is the head of his own company and constantly tries to outdo himself in how wicked he could be. His hatred for Peter is a running theme, as he constantly resents the fact that Lois married him. On several occasions, he’s made Peter eat a pinecone and drink his diabetic blood, had him kidnapped and dropped off to the middle of the ocean and even made him star in a remake of Liar, Liar as Jim Carrey’s character.

1 Joe

Honestly, part of the appeal of Joe is the fact that Patrick Warburton supplies the voice. Joe is a paraplegic cop who has overcompensated to the point of being a superhuman. He is probably the funniest character on the show, owing to his aggressive nature and weird quirks.

He yelled at his unborn child to get out of Bonnie, manages to depress everyone he talks to, and even tries to brag to Chris about having sex with his wife. Sure, a lot of jokes in newer episodes are a bit distasteful but overall, Joe stands as one of Family Guy’s most complex characters.
