Over the last few years, Netflix has released some really compelling docuseries that cover true crime topics. They range from the outlandish and unbelievable story of self-professed Tiger King Joe Exotic and his purported murder-for-hire plot to the terrible and heinous story of billionaire Jeffrey Epstein and his alleged pyramid-like scheme for abusing young women.

For those into the true crime genre, Netflix has tons of options that span various types of crimes, from murder to sexual abuse, fraud and embezzlement.

10 Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness (2020) – 86%

This docuseries could have just fallen under the radar. But its release couldn’t have been timed any better.

Telling the bizarre story of Joe Exotic, the eccentric owner of the G.W. Zoo in Oklahoma, and his intense rivalry with the equally odd Carole Baskin, who owns Big Cat Rescue in Florida, every episode was like peeling back another layer of a story so shocking, someone couldn’t believe it was real.

9 The Staircase (2004) – 93%

Novelist Michael Peterson was accused of murdering his wife, who purportedly fell down the stairs while intoxicated and died. The long and winding trial, however, suggested something more sinister: Peterson bludgeoned her to death then tried to cover it up.

The miniseries originally aired in 2004, but as the case developed, another special was made in 2012-2013. Then Netflix made three more episodes with updates on the enthralling case. Now, all 13 episodes can be streamed there.

8 Surviving R. Kelly (2019) – 95%

In the age of the Me Too Movement, brave women come forward in this disturbing docuseries that details the sexual abuse they allege to have encountered at the hands of R&B and hip hop star R. Kelly.

Each account is so troubling, the series might be too much for some to stomach. But the bravery the women show has led to Kelly’s recent arrest and music artists to refuse to collaborate with him. It’s an emotional, heart-wrenching series that provides accounts from alleged victims, their families, those working in the music industry, and Kelly’s own brother.

7 The Keepers (2017) – 96%

The story is presented in seven totally bingeable episodes. It’s about the unsolved murder of Sister Cathy Cesnik, a nun who reportedly uncovered sexual abuse by a priest and was about to come forward about it.

She mysteriously went missing and now, more than five decades later, two of her former students are working with investigators in hopes of discovering the truth.

6 November 13: Attack on Paris (2018) – 100%

On November 13, 2015, six locations in and around Paris were attacked by ISIL terrorists, and 130 people were killed, hundreds more injured. This docuseries explores the events that happened.

It includes interviews with the mayor, French President, and Minister of the Interior. With only a single season of three episodes, it’s a quick watch.

5 The Confession Tapes (2017) – 100%

Another Netflix true crime docuseries to receive a perfect rating, this one examines various cases of false confessions that led to people being convicted of murders they did not commit.

Experts on false confessions are interviewed, along with those who work in the fields of criminal law, miscarriages of justice, and psychology. The series also shows an alternate version of what could have happened in each case.

4 The Innocence Files (2020) – 100%

Another series looking at wrongful convictions, this one focuses on how these instances can impact the people involved with the accused. It’s based on the work of the Innocence Project, an organization that aims to help wrongfully convicted individuals get out of jail and clear their names.

The miniseries includes nine episodes in its first season and has received almost universal acclaim.

3 The Confession Killer (2019) – 100%

Released at the end of 2019, this true crime documentary miniseries includes five episodes in its first season and is about Henry Lee Lucas who, in 1983, confessed to killing over 200 people in the U.S. However, years later, it was discovered that he was lying. It seems the privileges he was being awarded each time he confessed to another murder were enough to convince him to keep going with his hoax.

The series includes interviews with a number of people integral to the story, including detectives, district attorney, Texas Rangers, journalists, and the family of Debra Jackson, who he did in fact murder. The story prompted police to re-evaluate their techniques and learn more about false confessions.

2 Time: The Kalief Browder Story (2017) – 100%

This six-episode documentary miniseries hasn’t gotten much attention but it is highly rated. The series is about Kalief Browder, s high school student who was sent to prison and solitary confinement without even having been convicted of a crime!

The young boy had been accused of stealing a backpack. Yes, just a backpack. But because his family could not afford the $3,000 bail, this is what he was subjected to. Executive produced by Shawn “Jay Z” Carter, it’s an unbelievable story that will have viewers shaking their fists at the justice system.

1 Dirty Money (2018) – 100%

The only series on the list not to involve murder, this one tells various stories of corporate corruption, securities fraud, and creative accounting. There are six episodes in each of the two seasons, each an hour long and each covering a different story.

The series kicks off with the Volkswagen emissions scandal and continues on to delve into topics like Scott Tucker and payday loans in the U.S., HSBC’s money laundering scandal for the Sinaloa Cartel, and alleged ruthless and fraudulent practices at Wells Fargo.
