True-Crime is typically associated as a subgenre of Dramas or Mystery/Thrillers. Over the years, certain real-life stories have played out in such a way that it is actually exciting for people to learn about. 10 The Shark Net (8)
The Shark Net was actually a mini-series from 2003 that was based on a book. The book, however, is written by Robert Drewe, someone who actually knew the story’s serial killer personally.
Both the movie and the book capture the young Robert’s memories and paint one of the most terrifying pictures of one of Australia’s deadliest killers. Throughout the three-part miniseries, audiences are captivated and horrified as specific details from each crime are explored. Any fan of the true-crime subgenre is going to want to check this one out.
9 The Marcus-Nelson Murders (8)
In 1973, The Marcus-Nelson Murders aired as a made-for-TV movie. The movie itself is based on the Wylie-Hoffert murders, who were two young girls murdered at the same time.
After a young African-American man confesses to the crime, members of the police force begin to suspect that he is actually innocent and being coerced by someone else. The movie portrays a lot of the actual story elements in a very clever manner. While certain things are dramatized, it maintains a rather faithful portrayal of the actual events, making it one of the better true crime stories over the years.
8 Arsenic and Old Lace (8)
Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) is a dark comedy starring Cary Grant as Mortimer Brewster. In the film and the play that it’s based on, Brewster slowly and hilariously learns that his new family is a group of serial killers. Unlike other films on this list, Arsenic and Old Lace is definitely adapted for a wider audience and features very little of what it is based on.
The play and movie pull elements from the real-life story of Amy Archer-Gilligan, one of America’s deadliest serial killers. Though the total number of bodies is unknown, Archer-Gilligan is believed to have killed between 20-100 people. While Arsenic and Old Lace may be a comedy, the events it is based on are far from a laughing matter.
7 The Night of the Hunter (8)
Robert Mitchum stars as Reverend Harry Powell in The Night of the Hunter (1955). Though also not the most faithful adaptation of the true events, The Night of the Hunter is far more loyal to the true story than Arsenic and Old Lace.
Even the names (Harry Powers was the killer in real life) are incredibly similar. Likewise, certain things obviously had to be changed for the sake of the victims as well as the story. However, that doesn’t change the fact that it is still one of the more horrific true crime films, even this many years after the release.
6 Memories of Murder (8.1)
2003’s Memories of Murder is a Korean film revolving around one of the country’s first known serial killers. Directed by Bong Joon-ho, this film follows detectives on the case as they begin to investigate the deaths of several women. The film juggles its pacing well and has a great way of incorporating the actual elements of the case.
With a bit of the supernatural tossed in for good measure, Memories of Murders is a bit different from other true crime films. However, any fan of the sub-genre is still likely to enjoy this lesser-known foreign film.
5 Eight Deadly Shots (8.2)
Widely considered to be one of Finland’s best films in general, Eight Deadly Shots (1972) follows the real-life murder of four Finnish Police Officers and the events leading up to their deaths. As a miniseries, Eight Deadly Shots follows a very wide cast of characters as they focus in on the hardships and motivations of the farmer who shot the officers.
Part of the film’s praise is in its character study. As another lesser-known film, Eight Deadly Shots is going to be perfect for those who like a bit more of an analytical approach to their films.
4 M (8.3)
M (1931) is a German film that focuses on one of the more interesting serial killer stories. In the film, several criminals begin to work with the police in order to help catch a serial killer who has started killing children.
Though the film itself isn’t based on a single serial killer, many believe it to be the story of Peter Kurten, whose similar crimes took place about a decade before the film. To this day, M remains one of the most interesting and well-made true crime dramas. As one of the oldest as well, holding its spot is no easy feat, making this classic ideal for any true crime fan.
3 The Hillside Stranglers (8.4)
Another true crime TV movie that is well worth watching is The Hillside Stranglers (2001). While several versions of this story have been told over the years, IMDB places the 2001 version at the top. As one of the more horrific serial murder cases, real-life Detective, Bob Grogan was so haunted by it that it completely altered his personality.
Furthermore, the case of the two cousins responsible remains one of the longest trials in American history to date. The film itself does an excellent job of going into specifics and paints a haunting picture of the events that transpired, easily landing it among the best within the true crime genre.
2 Psycho (8.5)
Alfred Hitchcock’s famous film, Psycho (1960) is most known as an adaptation of the book by the same name. However, Robert Bloch’s novel is loosely inspired by the killer Ed Gein. Knowing this adds a whole new layer of depth and horror to the classic film.
The fact that Anthony Perkins’ Norman Bates is based off a real killer makes the film all the more terrifying to watch. While certain elements of Psycho don’t exactly hold up today, there is still a lot in the film to appreciate, easily landing it as the 2nd highest rated true crime movie on IMDB.
1 The Silence of the Lambs (8.6)
Much like Psycho, The Silence of the Lambs (1991) is also a dramatization of some real-life events. “Buffalo Bill” is the infamous villain of the film, a killer who captures women in his basement and tortures them, eventually skinning them to wear them as clothes. What some may not realize though is that the character is based on Gary Heidnik, a man who killed 2 women and tortured more during the 1940s.
The Silence of the Lambs is already a terrifying film, with many elements holding up to this day. Therefore, knowing someone has actually committed some of these crimes only makes it more horrifying. Because of this, it is easy to see how The Silence of the Lambs is the top-rated true crime movie on IMDB.
