Utilizing its documentary format to the fullest, Last Chance U makes for a heavily motivational watch for sports fans. Thematically, it stands for many of Haikyuu!!’s underlying philosophies, emphasizing the need for leadership, teamwork, and finding life lessons, even in defeat.

Spun out of The Karate Kid movies, Cobra Kai is rooted in the longstanding conflict between two karate enemies. Years later, when they decide to open their own dojos, the relationships between their students also grow complicated.

There are many similarities between the characters of Cobra Kai and Haikyuu!! For starters, the former’s protagonist, Miguel, is the classic underdog who is reinvented after picking up martial arts. Hinata is a similar character who gives it his best to become a volleyball star despite his height disadvantage. Kageyama and Hinata’s constant rivalry and partnership are also comparable to duos like Miguel and Robby in Cobra Kai. Even though these characters eventually stand side by side, they share a constant sense of competition that only drives them further.
