The age of reboots seems to be continuing with the release of Head of the Class on HBO Max. The original series of the same name aired for 5 seasons on ABC but hasn’t reached cult classic status like some other sitcoms of the era have. That didn’t stop HBO Max from reviving the series for a new generation of viewers.

The series centers on a group of overachieving high school students who are all a part of the school’s debate team. After an incident with their original teacher, a young and new teacher, Ms. Adams (Isabella Gomez), finds herself in charge of the class. Head of the Class is a traditional multi-cam sitcom full of laughs and heartfelt moments. With only ten episodes, fans of the reboot have been left wondering what to watch next. Luckily, there are plenty of shows streaming with a similar theme and tone.

10 Alexa & Katie (2018-2020) – Available On Netflix

Despite airing for four seasons on Netflix, Alexa & Katie is still an underrated teen Netflix show. It centers on best friends Katie and Alexa as they navigate high school in the wake of Alexa’s cancer treatments. Through highs and lows, Alexa and Katie remain best friends and partners in crime getting into all sorts of wacky situations.

Alexa & Katie is extremely similar to Head of the Class in both general tone and the style of humor. Both shows also focus on the importance of friendship and supporting one another while in high school.

9 A.P. Bio (2018-) – Available On Peacock

A.P. Bio originally aired on NBC for two seasons and was later moved to NBC’s streaming service Peacock. Now in its fourth season, the series has built up a loyal and devoted fanbase.

Like Head of the Class, AP Bio focuses on a group of academically gifted students who find their learning jeopardized by a new teacher. Jack has just been fired from his job and isn’t thrilled with his new teaching job. The only difference between these two shows is that A.P. Bio takes on a more mischievous tone since Jack uses his students to get back at his rival.

8 Boy Meets World (1993-2000) – Available On Disney+

Boy Meets World is arguably one of the best sitcoms set in a high school and a title it’s held on to for a long time. For seven seasons, fans flocked to the series to watch Cory and his two best friends Shawn and Topanga navigate adolescence while learning life lessons from Mr. Feeny, their teacher.

While Boy Meets World might tackle deeper issues in episodes, it is still extremely similar to Head of the Class. Mr. Feeny and Ms. Adams both want their students to succeed and go out of their way to ensure their success.

7 Diary Of A Future President (2020-) – Available On Disney+

Diary of a Future President centers on Elena Cañero-Reed, a middle schooler who grows up to be President of the United States. While her older self makes appearances, the majority of the series follows Elena through her middle school life as she tries to figure out who she wants to be.

Both Diary of a Future President and Head of the Class center on strong, young female characters who are trying to find their place in the world. While the former might be geared towards a younger audience, there is still a lot of overlap between the shows in the humor department.

6 Drama Club (2021-) – Available On Hulu

Nickelodeon has aired dozens of iconic children’s shows over the years and in 2021 they released their newest original show: Drama Club. Set in a middle school, the series centers on a group of students who are all a part of the school’s underrated and ignored drama club.

The biggest reason these two shows are similar is that they both chose to focus on a specific class in a school setting. While debate and drama club might not seem like there’s a lot of overlap, there actually is since both are often overlooked and bring in an eccentric group of students together.

5 Girl Meets World (2014-2017) – Available On Disney+

Nearly two decades after Boy Meets World stopped airing, the beloved series got a sequel with the release of Girl Meets World on Disney Channel. This time, the series centered on Riley Matthews, the daughter of Cory and Topanga, as she and her friends support each other through the highs and lows of growing up.

With Cory learning from Mr. Feeny, it only makes sense that he became the kind of history teacher who snuck life lessons into his history ones. The same is true for Ms. Adams on Head of the Class as she tries to get her students to see that academic success isn’t everything making them some of the best teachers on tv.

4 High School Musical: The Musical: The Series (2019-) – Available on Disney +

Based on the iconic Disney Channel Original Movies, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series welcomed a new generation to the halls of East High. With the arrival of a new drama teacher, the East High drama department is set to put on the school’s first production of High School Musical: The Musical.

Not only do both shows feature a large, eccentric, and hilarious cast of teenagers but they also both feature new teachers unsure of their teaching abilities. Miss Jenn and Ms. Adams have a lot in common, especially their love for their students.

3 Saved By The Bell (2020-) – Available On Peacock

The original Saved By The Bell aired around the same time as the original Head of the Class which is why it makes total sense that both shows would get a reboot around the same time. The reboot begins after Gov. Zack Morris closes several schools in low-income areas forcing the students to transfer to Bayside High School.

Head of the Class stays a bit more light and fluffy than Saved By The Bell has but the two shows still have a lot in common. Just like the debate club butts heads with the “regular” students, so do the new kids at Bayside High.

2 Schooled (2019-2020) – Available On Tubi

A spin-off of ABC’s hit family sitcom The Goldbergs, Schooled followed Lainey Lewis as she embarked on a new career journey as a high school music teacher at her alma mater. With a little help from her coworkers, Lainey learns that being a teacher isn’t as bad as she thought.

While Schooled does focus more on the teachers than the students, it does have many similarities to Head of the Class. Most notably, Lainey and Ms. Adams go about teaching in interesting ways often deviating from the actual lesson at hand to help their students.

1 The Expanding Universe Of Ashley Garcia (2020) – Available On Netflix

The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia is a multi-cam series that premiered in 2020 but never got the attention it so deserved. The series followed Ashley Garcia, a teenage rocked scientist who moves in with her uncle after she accepts a job working with NASA. While there, she reconnects with childhood friends who are living normal teenage lives in high school.

Ashley and the students in Head of the Class have a lot in common since they’re all high achievers who put pressure on themselves to be perfect. However, they all also crave a normal teenage experience which is where the comedy stems from as they attempt to juggle it all.
