Sexy, cool, and dangerous are hallmarks of Angelina Jolie’s most well-known characters and even trademarks of the actor herself. Characters such as tomb raider Lara Croft, vengeful fairy Maleficent, and sociopath Lisa Rowe in Girl, Interrupted are just a few of her iconic roles.

However, fans of the mega-star know her range surpasses her bad girl characters. Never one to be complacent with typecasting, Jolie has gone against the grain and played roles that offer opportunities to show her versatility. While some of her films may not be as appreciated as the big-budget action fare she has become known for, Jolie’s lesser-known characters deserve recognition as the proof of a multifaceted, first-rate performer.

10 Gina Malacici – Love Is All There Is

This ’90s flick that puts a contemporary Italian-American spin on the Romeo and Juliet tale shows a very young Jolie in the beginning of her illustrious career as Gina Malacici, the aristocratic daughter of a rival Italian, Bronx family who falls in love with her blue-collar beau, Rosario.

Despite the film being a box office bomb and critical miss, Jolie showed an innocence necessary to the character of naïve and love-struck Gina as well as revealing Jolie as a more than capable comedic actress.

9 Lola – Shark Tale

Jolie’s first foray into voice acting and animation was 2004’s Shark Tale where she played a gold-digging fish. As odd as this casting choice sounds, it only proved Jolie’s versatility further. Jolie plays the role with great enthusiasm, giving a great voice performance on par with the rest of the star-studded cast that included Jack Black, Will Smith, Robert De Niro, Martin Scorcese, and Renee Zellweger.

While Shark Tale isn’t considered a top-notch animated film, Jolie’s work as lionfish Lola reflected Jolie’s adventurous and fearless approach to roles. Jolie’s willingness to take a risk and be part of an animated movie is a fun example of how game Jolie is as an actor.

8 Julia Russell/Bonny Castle – Original Sin

In one of Jolie’s most seductive roles, she is utterly convincing as a double-crossing mail-order bride. While the film itself was universally panned, Jolie’s performance was singled out as the highlight of the film.

Using her own offscreen Hollywood persona (at the time) to fuel her performance of this aloof and alluring temptress of a character, Jolie is able to make the most far-fetched scenes work to her advantage and actually seem plausible.

7 Christine Collins – Changeling

This Clint Eastwood-directed film displays one of Jolie’s most formidable performances as a mother dealing with loss, manipulation, gaslighting, sexism, and grief. The story is of Christine Collins, who upon having her abducted son returned to her, sees that the boy who came back is actually an imposter. When she pleads her son is still missing, she is labeled insane by the authorities and placed in a barbaric psychiatric hospital.

Jolie plays the distressing subject matter with sensitivity, exhibiting a character with the tenacious resiliency needed to endure the unimaginable pain and suffering Christine faces throughout Changeling.

6 Lanie Kerrigan – Life Or Something Like It

One of Jolie’s few starring roles in a romantic comedy, Life or Something like It places her as superficial reporter Lanie Kerrigan, who reprioritizes her life after a fortune teller alters her that she has one week to live.

With palpable chemistry between Jolie and love interest Edward Burns, it is easy for the audience to root for their characters and see them end up together. Further, this romantic comedy allowed Jolie to show a great level of energy and excitement which differs greatly from her strong but silent type characters that are prolific in her filmography.

5 Fox – Wanted

An exciting and fast-paced action romp, Wanted starred Jolie as a take no prisoners assassin who takes dorky Wesley under her wing and shows him the ropes of a secret assassin society. Silent during many scenes throughout the movie, Jolie creates an elusive figure who seems to always be many steps ahead of everyone, even those who are her superiors in the organization.

Jolie’s characterization of Fox manages to make the character both unattainable and worthy of admiration. Fox is a total badass and it’s easy to see why.

4 Evelyn Salt – Salt

Jolie is in full action-star mode in the film Salt, which casts her as a CIA operative accused of being a Russian sleeper spy. With multiple fight scenes and heavy action sequences, Evelyn Salt was expertly played by a game Jolie, giving a very persuasive portrayal of a woman on the run desperate to clear her name and take down anyone who is in her way.

While she’s more known for action in Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Tomb Raider, Jolie has a criminally underrated action character in Evelyn Salt that rarely gets the recognition that she deserves.

3 Amelia Donaghy – The Bone Collector

This crime thriller starred Angelina Jolie opposite Denzel Washington as officers tracking down a serial killer. As a gifted rookie police officer, Jolie plays Amelia as both dogged in the pursuit of the killer but also hesitant to explore the disturbing world of forensics and murderers.

Jolie is able to showcase many conflicting emotions in Amelia Donaghy, remarking on her remarkable ability to play complex characters. This 1999 film was one of Jolie’s first portrayals of a complicated female character, which would later be one of her most common and beloved character types.

2 Kate Libby/Acid Burn – Hackers

Part of Jolie’s early filmography, Hackers later became a cult classic. However, when one brings up Angelina Jolie’s work, many fail to mention it. The movie stars Jolie as a computer hacker who, along with other anarchic teens, becomes part of a corporate extortion scheme.

With a cyberpunk fashion and a counterculture spirit, Kate Libby is an iconic Jolie character as it cemented Jolie as a pro at playing enigmatic, cool girl characters, Kate Libby being one of the first.

1 Gia Carangi – Gia

Playing a real public figure can be daunting, especially if the person is remembered under tragic circumstances. This was the case for Angelina Jolie in playing supermodel Gia Carangi, who died young from aids-related causes as a result of heroin addiction.

Jolie played the wild, beautiful, fragile, and adventurous Gia Carangi magnificently, making the scandalous tabloid fixture of the ’80s that Gia was, into a living and breathing individual that the public could relate to and feel empathy towards. One of the projects that showed that Jolie was a talent to watch out for, Gia has ultimately become forgotten among Jolie’s work but remains one of her most impressive roles.
