10 Best Villains In Marvels SpiderMan Game Ranked

With Marvel’s Spider-Man, Insomniac Games brought the web-slinger to life in a way that rivaled any blockbuster film. Now Yuri Lowenthal’s portrayal of Spider-Man is beloved, but like with any superhero portrayal, he needs a good villain to balance and elevate the story.

Marvel’s Spider-Man features a wide array of villains ranging from iconic names to obscure gems. Which baddies stand out the most across the massive campaign and side missions? This will not be including villains and boss fights from Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

10 Shocker

10 Best Villains In Marvels SpiderMan Game Ranked

This was a perfect starter villain for Marvel’s Spider-Man. He doesn’t have a complex story nor does he send the player on a massive side quest. He’s robbing banks with a new high-tech suit and Spider-Man has to stop him: basic but effective since Shocker is a pretty simple villain.

However, he does start Spider-Man down on the path to figuring out who is leading this new gang of criminals known as the Demons. His boss fight is not going to make players pull their hair out, but Shocker will test reflexes and keep them on their toes.

9 Silver Sable

10 Best Villains In Marvels SpiderMan Game Ranked

Technically, Sable is only a villain at first but that’s because she’s good at her job: security. She’s hired by Norman Osborn to protect him and stop the Demons; unfortunately, this position often puts her at odds with Spider-Man, whom she is fully capable of bringing down to the ground.

The only downside is that there is no boss fight with Sable because she ends up allying with Spider-Man to save Osborn. In the Silver Lining DLC, Sable is trying to stop Hammerhead and redeem herself and shows more growth as a character, helping her become an anti-hero.

8 Electro

As a big bonus, Electro is portrayed by voice actor Josh Keaton, who has provided the voices of many characters over the years. In the sadly short-lived animated series The Spectacular Spider-Man, Keaton was the voice of Peter Parker. However, that’s not all Electro has going for him.

Insomniac’s take on Electro is something unique: he wears a special suit to harness his power over electricity. Fans of the comics might recognize Max Dillon’s star-shaped scar across his face and head as a reference to his more campy design from the comics. Electro also has one of the more memorable boss fights when the Sinister Six break out into the city.

7 Vulture

10 Best Villains In Marvels SpiderMan Game Ranked

Taking notes from the Michael Keaton portrayal of this character, Vulture is given a more mechanized suit with bladed wings. Though he is not as sympathetic as his MCU counterpart, it is shown that using his Vulture suit gave Adrian Toomes spinal cancer and all he wants is to be cured.

Doc Ock promises to remove his cancer as long as he does exactly what he wants, thus giving him a reason to join the Sinister Six; making way for the boss fight he shares with Electro. It’s not much, but it’s enough to make Vulture more than a one-note villain, there is a reason why he returns to villainy.

6 Tombstone

10 Best Villains In Marvels SpiderMan Game Ranked

One of Spider-Man’s most underrated villains; rather than the usual portrayal of a Dick Tracy-inspired rival, Tombstone is given a welcomed upgrade. He’s depicted as a man who became exposed to a drug that gave him stone-like skin and near-indestructibility. Instead of an old-school gangster, he’s the leader of a biker gang.

Tombstone is also given an even meaner streak, smashing a man’s skull with his foot for simply being out of line. He’s an enemy that has an intimidation factor and feels like he’s earned the top spot of his biker gang. Combined with a tough boss fight, Tombstone shines in his short side mission.

5 Rhino

10 Best Villains In Marvels SpiderMan Game Ranked

Mixing old and new, Rhino has the giant superhuman physique but he also wears a mechanized Rhino suit. It’s a perfect balance that retains the aspects of the two most famous versions of Rhino in the comics. However, in a surprise twist, Aleksei Sytsevich does not want to be in his suit.

It’s revealed that Aleksei lives a horrible life, permanently bonded to the Rhino suit, which makes it understandable why he sides with Doc Ock. Rhino’s shining encounter is actually when the player controls Miles Morales in a tense stealth sequence.

4 Norman Osborn

10 Best Villains In Marvels SpiderMan Game Ranked

There is no Green Goblin in Marvel’s Spider-Man. Instead, Norman Osborn is simply a politician whose ambition and ego get the better of him. His whole career and celebrity status was built by pushing and walking over people to get his way, even swindling partners out of an entire company.

Norman Osborn is also responsible for the creation of villains including both Mr. Negative and Doctor Octopus. So while he is not an enemy to Spider-Man per se, he is still a bad guy in the grand scheme because of his blind pursuit for power.

3 Hammerhead

10 Best Villains In Marvels SpiderMan Game Ranked

Across all three DLC stories, Hammerhead is the baddie that ties them all together. He’s a gangster obsessed with the old days when criminals were as respected as they were feared. As a result, he’s willing to bring New York City to its knees to bring those days back.

He retains that Dick Tracy-styled design but in an ironic twist of fate, he becomes so obsessed with his goal that he transforms himself into a cyborg by the end of the third story. To go back to the past, he embraces the technological future and becomes one of the hardest bosses to beat in Marvel’s Spider-Man.

2 Mr. Negative

10 Best Villains In Marvels SpiderMan Game Ranked

It was a bold move to bring in a relatively new rogue from the comics as one of the main threats of a reboot of Spider-Man. In the end, however, it proved to be effective, as Mr. Negative proves to be equal parts intimidating as he is tragic and sympathetic, like many other Spider-Man villains.

Martin Li begins as a good man running a charity organization known as FEAST, and the game instantly makes the player like him. It makes it hard to see Li descend into darkness as a result of a mistake from Norman Osborn that gave him powers but also killed Li’s parents.

1 Doctor Octopus

At first, Otto Octavius is a brilliant scientist trying to help the world and was a perfect new father figure for Peter Parker. Their friendship is believable and even though the player knows that Otto is destined to become Doctor Octopus, the story still makes him likable.

However, Norman Osborn plus the disease Otto is afflicted with drives him over the edge and it breaks Peter’s heart. Doc Ock becomes the main villain of the story who manages to distinguish himself and rival Alfred Molina’s beloved portrayal. It turns the climax into an emotional rollercoaster, especially in the final fight.
