A new version of Electro and the return of classic villains are among the biggest reveals from the new Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer.

The latest trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home continues to build anticipation for the movie with giant reveals about the vast array of villains from across the multiverse that will appear. Not only will Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus and Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin return, but villains from every Spider-Man movie to date are visible in the new trailer.
The trailer also provides some more clues about the story of the film, including some big surprises about the setting of the epic final battle as well as the conflict between Spider-Man and Doctor Strange. That appears to lead to absolute chaos and the possibility of appearances by former Spider-Men Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.
10 The Statue Of Liberty Now Has Captain America’s Shield
One of the most fascinating reveals in the new trailer was a major change to the Statue of Liberty. There are a lot of important versions of Captain America in the comics and MCU, and now it appears one of them will be one of the most iconic pieces of architecture in the world. The statue appears to be going through a major refit to add a shield to her torch hand.
The apparent final battle of the movie takes place at the statue, and the trailer reveals that at some point, the shield falls from the hand, taking most of the scaffolding down with it (and it seems, MJ).
9 Spider-Man Is Trying To Save The Villains
The trailer makes clear part of the plot of the movie is Spider-Man trying to get the villains back to their proper homes in the multiverse. This is over the protestations of Doctor Strange, who says all of them are destined to die at the hands of Spider-Man. This sets up a major conflict between the two, with the heroes fighting over a mysterious cube that has something to do with the villains.
It’s compelling that Peter Parker wants to help villains out to kill him, likely appreciating the possible agency the multiverse allows. Doctor Strange seems beholden to absolute destiny, which may be a result of him losing the Time Stone.
8 Doctor Octopus’ Arms Acquire Stark Nano-Tech
Most comic book fans know Doctor Octopus is one of the smartest and most dangerous Marvel supervillains. In the MCU, Dr. Otto Octavius seemingly becomes even more dangerous when he acquires the nano-tech of the Iron Spider suit. In a confrontation with Peter Parker under the bridge, the Stark-designed suit seems to result in an instant upgrade for Doc Ock’s arms.
The upgrade may be permanent as Doctor Octopus is seen in later scenes with the distinctive red and gold Iron Man colors on his arms. This could possibly alter the behavior of his robotic limbs, which in the Sam Raimi movie, seemed to have a mind of their own.
7 The Green Goblin Returns
The Green Goblin’s return has been hinted at in the previous trailer, but the new one confirms it with a great reveal. The Green Goblin from the original 2002 Sam Raimi Spider-Man movie emerges from a cloud of smoke in the highway battle, appearing much as he did in that movie. Willem Dafoe, who played the character, is also heard in a voiceover later in the trailer.
The Green Goblin’s role in the movie is less clear than Doc Ock’s, though, in the brief audio of Willem Dafoe, he seems to be tempting Spider-Man by pointing how much he’s struggling to have things the way he wants.
6 Harry Osborn Might Appear Too
One of the most unexpected reveals from the trailer is a shot of who appears to be the Harry Osborn Green Goblin from The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The shot goes by too fast to be sure, but the figure looks very close to the design of the character from the Andrew Garfield sequel. It would make sense that he does appear, as nearly every other villain from that iteration of the franchise is coming back.
It remains unclear if Dane DeHaan is returning for No Way Home, or it’s a new actor. Changes to Electro from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 indicate there is some flexibility.
5 Electro May Be Using An Arc Reactor
Electro is also one of the biggest reveals of the new trailer. Long rumored to be appearing, Jamie Foxx is reprising his role from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 with a big twist. The character seems as though he could be harnessing his electrical powers off of an arc reactor similar to that of Iron Man.
Electro’s visual look and power expression have also changed significantly, from the electric blue from the previous movie to a more comic book-inspired yellow. Given the many powerful versions of Electro in the comics, this isn’t too surprising.
4 The Sinister… (Insert Number Here)
The trailer makes it obvious a huge number of villains are joining the fight in the new movie. What isn’t clear is exactly how many. The movie is creating a version of an MCU Sinister Six, but there are hints it’s much more than six. There are many powerful members of the Sinister Six in the comics, and it’s likely many of them will appear.
Also possible to return are the Vulture, played by Michael Keaton, and Mysterio, played by Jake Gyllenhall. They could even be joined by Venom. The post-credits scene from Venom: Let There Be Carnage suggests he could show up in the MCU at some point.
3 Into The Spider-Verse
The trailer ends with an ominous shot of the New York City skyline. Purple and orange energy vines across the sky, reminiscent of the splintering branches of the multiverse at the end of Loki. The effect also echoes the unique animated crackle of Spider-Man: Into The Multiverse, which achieved the same collision of realities.
While it’s unlikely that any animated characters from that movie will crossover into live-action, it’s possible there are some connections, given that both movies are dealing with essentially the same subject matter.
2 Parallels To Past Movies
There are obvious parallels between the animated Spider-Verse movie and No Way Home. There are clear echoes of earlier live-action movies as well. The most obvious example in the new trailer is MJ falling from the scaffolding, replicating harrowing moments from both the Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire movies.
In the Raimi movies, Spider-Man saved MJ from falling. He failed to save Gwen Stacy in the Andrew Garfield movies, a tragic ending to that iteration of the franchise that could possibly be redeemed in this one. There’s also a shot of Peter and one of Green Goblin’s bombs that is similar to one from the Raimi film.
1 Someone Invisible Punches The Lizard
Rumors abound that Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire will appear in No Way Home. While the new trailer doesn’t give anything away on the front, it may have inadvertently hinted at their presence. In an epic shot featuring the Lizard, Electro, and Sandman launching an attack on Spider-Man, the Lizard appears to be struck. But no one hits him.
The Lizard is also not directly charging Spider-Man, but leaping down and away from him. In what could be a sly piece of editing, the trailer could be obscuring the presence of Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire in what would be one of the best Spider-Man moments ever.
