Today, everyone is obsessed with a great crime documentary or drama flick. Serial killers are both utterly terrifying and absolutely intriguing, and every streaming service has had some great success with releasing and promoting some true crime features.

There’s a lot of fictional tropes that appear in these kind of movies, but the best ones are those that are actually based on a true story – and tell the tale of a real-life serial killer. It’s time to step outside of fiction and get binging some movies that are intense, entertaining – and based on real people.

10 My Friend Dahmer (2017) – 6.2

The lowest on the list still deserves a watch, and tells the strange and interesting story of Jeffrey Dahmer – a young man who committed murders and sex offenses on young men in the 1980s.

One of the darkest stories of murder, My Friend Dahmer follows Jeffrey in high school, right before his murderous spree at 18-years-old began. Ross Lynch takes the role, and is directed by Marc Meyers.

9 The Iceman (2012) – 6.8

This crime drama stars Chris Evans, Michael Shannon, and James Franco. Based on the true story of Richard Kuklinski, The Iceman tells a bit different of a story. He’s a contract killer with a family.

This movie is about his life, murders, and his eventual arrest. While it’s not a true ‘serial killer’ flick about a man who is killing for his own enjoyment, it still holds up for being a true story that’s intense and full of crime. Plus, it’s different than most.

8 Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer (1986) – 7.0

Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer tells the true story of Henry, known as ‘The Confession Killer’, a drifter who claimed to have murdered dozens and dozens of people.

Henry’s story isn’t quite like any other, and this terrifying but totally mesmerizing film does an impressive job at telling it. For all fans of this genre, this is a must-see.

7 The Boston Strangler (1968) – 7.1

Directed by Richard Fleischer and starring Tony Curtis and Henry Fonda, The Boston Strangler takes place in the ’60s, when there were over a dozen women murdered in the Boston area. This movie follows the investigators on the case.

This crime mystery is based off of one of the most infamous killers in the United States, and is the best screen adaptation of the story to date.

6 Monster (2003) – 7.3

Charlize Theron certainly deserved her Oscar for her performance as Aileen Wuornos, a sex worker in Daytona Beach. After being sexually assaulted by a client, she sets off to murder the men that hire her for her services.

Monster tells the dynamic and devastating true story of this woman, and how she became known as the ‘first female serial killer’. A highly-profiled case, this movie does every aspect of it justice.

5 Citizen X (1995) – 7.5

Citizen X takes place during the 1980s, and actually follows Soviet authorities as they try and catch a killer, who finds his victims at train stations. This flick is based off the true story of Andrei Chikatilo, or ‘The Butcher of Rostov’.

With politics, murder, and time on their hands, this movie gives a glimpse of every angle involved in the case. Plus, many Americans might not know the true story of this serial killer.

4 10 Rillington Place (1971) – 7.6

This lesser-known movie is definitely a hidden gem, and tells the true story of British killer John Christie, who went on a murder streak of his neighbors. The movie follows two of them, who get caught up in the violence and lies.

With Richard Attenborough and Judy Geeson, 10 Rillington Place is a UK flick that all North Americans will love to be terrified by – and gives a voice to true events.

3 Zodiac (2007) – 7.7

This crime drama is directed by David Fincher and has a star-studded cast including Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo, and Robert Downey Jr. In the late 1960s, the Zodiac Killer makes himself known.

Zodiac follows a cartoonist at a well-esteemed newspaper, who tries to do his own detective work during the murderous sprees. This story is one of the most well-known and mysterious there is, and Zodiac nails it.

2 Psycho (1960) – 8.5

Psycho might just be one of the most iconic movies out there today in general, not just in the serial killer genre. Alfred Hitchcock created a timeless character with Norman Bates, but it turns out, he actually got some inspiration from a real-life killer: Ed Gein.

Like Norman Bates, Gein had an interesting relationship with his mother. He was also sent to a mental institution following his arrest. This movie is as flawless and classic as they come – all while being a fictionalized tale of a true event.

1 The Silence Of The Lambs (1991) – 8.6

The Silence of the Lambs might be the most iconic serial killer flick to ever exist, and it also won a whopping 5 Oscars. Plus, it actually features two serial killers, Buffalo Bill and Dr. Hannibal Lecter, who are both based on real-life murderers.

While this movie isn’t actually a retelling of a true events, it’s still intriguing that Buffalo Bill was loosely based on Ed Gein and Gary Michael Heidnik, while Lecter was inspired by a surgeon, Alfredo Ballí Treviño. For a terrifying and riveting ride, this movie deserves a binge.
