10 Cancelled Disney Princesses We’ll Never See Movies About

Ever since Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was released, giving us the first ever Disney Princess and Disney’s first full-length animated feature film, there have been a lot of Disney movies that have come out. With each new movie, we’re given a brand new set of characters, often including a whole new princess that the movie focuses on.

But, although there have been a lot of Disney movies that have been released and a ton of brand new characters given to us in those movies, there are also a lot of them that we never actually saw. Despite the fact that it seems like Disney is releasing brand new movies all the time, there are also a lot of movies that they’ve had plans for and then ultimately decided to cancel. This means that there are characters and Disney Princesses that we’ll never see featured in a movie. Some of them have appeared in other movies by other companies while others were shelved altogether.

10 Penelope And The Twelve Months

Penelope and the Twelve Moths was a short film that was planned in the 1940s. Two different plans for the movie were put together, but each one was ultimately cancelled and we’ll likely never see a movie based on the story of Penelope.

The first iteration of this potential film followed Penelope, a young girl who was able to travel through time with the use of a magical grandfather clock. On her travels through time, Penelope would meet a variety of different supernatural creatures. A lot of concept art featuring Penelope at different periods of history and her family members has surfaced, but the plans for the movie were cancelled, leaving us with nothing but these drawings.

9 Odette (Swan Lake)

The Swan Princess was released in the mid-1990s and was produced by a former Disney employee, but one thing that many 90s kids may forget is the fact that this animated film was not actually a Disney movie. But, this film was almost a Disney production by the name of Swan Lake.

The Swan Princess is an animated film that is loosely based on the classic ballet Swan Lake, but it’s not quite the same story. Disney almost produced an animated film based more closely to the original story of Swan Lake, but they ended up cancelling their plans for it, meaning that a Disney version of Princess Odette is something we’ll likely never see come to life.

8 Mary Contrary (Babes In Toyland)

Along with their animated films, Disney has produced quite a few live action movies too. In 1955, Walt Disney announced that he was planning to produce Babes in Toyland as a feature length animated film. Unfortunately, despite having a lot of hype in the world of cinema, the film ended up being cancelled due to filming delays.

Years later, plans for the movie were brought back to life and a live-action version of the movie was released in 1961. Annette Funicello played the role of Mary Contrary in the live-action version of Babes in Toyland, but the fact that the animated version from the 1950s was cancelled means we likely won’t see an animated princess version of Mary from Disney.

7 Princess Academy

Princess Academy isn’t necessarily a cancelled movie about a single princess, but is a cancelled Disney project that we still wish had come to life. This was set to be an animated short that would feature all of our favorite Disney Princesses from past films in one place. The short film was said to be a musical that puts all of the main female characters from Disney’s films into a boarding school together.

Various pieces of concept art featuring a massive number of Disney favorites have found their way online, but that’s all we ended up getting from this short film. Whether or not it would have introduced a new character is unclear, but it was said to give brand new music and it would’ve been nice to see all these princesses in one place.

6 Little Minnehaha

Little Hiawatha is a Disney short that was released in 1937. It features a young Native American boy named Hiawatha who finds himself in a sticky situation when he comes in contact with a ferocious bear. Hiawatha became a feature of other Disney comics and books throughout the middle of the 20th century.

At one point, a sequel to Little Hiawatha, called Little Minnehaha, was said to be in production. The movie was set to feature Hiawatha’s female counterpart, a young Native American girl named Minnehaha, but that’s really all that we know about this cancelled Disney project.

5 Sonja Henie Fantasy

Long before Elsa, Disney had another ice princess in the works. Sonja Henie was a world famous Norwegian figure skater who was renowned for her skating skills and was an Olympic Champion.

In the 1940s, at the height of Henie’s popularity, Disney was working on a film with a main character who was going to be based on her. Not a lot is known about the plot of this movie or just how close to the real-life figure skater their character was going to be, but the movie was said to be compared to a musical like Fantasia.

4 Hansel And Gretel

As early as 1961, Disney apparently had plans to make their own version of the classic fairy tale Hansel and Gretel. The two of them did appear in Disney’s Babes in the Woods in 1932 as part of Disney’s Silly Symphonies, but a full-length movie about the two of them never came to be.

Hansel and Gretel is a classic fairy tale about siblings who find themselves lost in the woods, only to stumble upon the house of a cannibalistic witch who has a taste for children. Even though Disney never made their own version of this movie, the two of them have appeared in several other versions throughout the years.

3 Little Red Riding Hood

In the early 1960s, Disney had plans to create films on quite a few different well-known fairy tales. We all know that a lot of Disney’s most popular films, like Cinderella and Tangled are based on fairy tales, so Disney seeking out others to make films on isn’t that surprising.

At one point, they almost made a movie based on Little Red Riding Hood. There’s not much known about this movie since it was never fully in production, but the fact that the title character almost became a Disney Princess in the 1960s is definitely interesting!

2 Goldilocks And The Three Bears

Another almost-produced fairy tale adaption from the 1960s was Goldilocks and the Three Bears. This potential Disney film is another one that was cancelled really early into the production process, so it’s hard to find any really solid details about Disney’s plans for it.

Despite the fact that Disney cancelled their adaption of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, they eventually did put their own spin on the fairy tale. In 2015, they began airing a series called Goldie & Bear on Disney Junior based on the series. Still, Goldilocks as a Disney Princess is a concept that was shelved and that we’ll likely never see.

1 Which Witch?

In 2003, Disney announced their plans to create their own adaption of Which Witch?, a children’s book by Eva Ibbotson. The story follows a wizard who is tasked with finding a wife before he’s able to retire, so he has witches from all over the world compete to prove they’re the best witch around.

The movie would focus more heavily on the male protagonist, but would no doubt give us a new princess in the process. The movie ended up being shelved, but The Jim Henson Co. picked it back up in 2014.
