10 Characters Who Could Be The Ultimate Villain In Spider-Man: No Way Home

A ton of villains like Doctor Octopus and Green Goblin are appearing in Spider-Man: No Way Home, but who could be the ultimate villain of the movie?

The latest trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home pits Peter Parker against a wide array of villains from all the previous Spider-Man movie franchises. The stakes have never been higher with Doctor Octopus, Green Goblin, Electro, and others all teaming up against the Wall-Crawler. But there may be other villains, and, in fact, someone who is the ultimate villain behind everything.

Lots of speculation has centered around the developments in the two trailers seen so far, and there is some possibility that the multiversal calamity happening in the movie is not entirely accidental. The true culprit could end up shocking audiences when the movie opens in December.

Doctor Strange

A lot of fan speculation about Spider-Man: No Way Home focuses on Doctor Strange’s behavior. It seems unlikely that the Sorcerer Supreme would willingly engage in such a reckless spell to erase people’s memory of Peter Parker, not to mention also dismiss Wong’s strict objections.

It’s equally surprising that he would be distracted by Parker in casting it. Does Doctor Strange have an ulterior motive? Is he attempting to get the Time Stone back, or is there some other reason he would be so willing to take such a huge risk?

What If…? Doctor Strange

Is he even Doctor Strange? It’s a valid question and one fans have been asking. A popular theory about Doctor Strange has his counterpart from the animated What If…? series impersonating him in live-action. That variant of Doctor Strange destroyed an entire universe in acquiring more and more magic and could be doing the same thing here.

The season finale of What If…? left the dark Doctor Strange trapped in what remained of his reality, but he was trapped with six Infinity Stones, meaning he has the power to escape and possibly do more damage.

Baron Mordo

Illusion casting is among Doctor Strange’s strongest powers in the comics, but he’s not the only one who can do it. It’s possible someone is impersonating Strange in the movie, and a likely suspect is Baron Mordo. Fans last saw Mordo at the end of the first Doctor Strange movie, stealing back magic others had used to help people.

Baron Mordo was disillusioned by Strange’s use of magic to alter nature and warned him the bill would eventually come due. It’s possible Mordo’s way of getting back at Strange is by committing a terrible act in his name.

Agatha Harkness

Agatha Harkness is one of the most powerful magicians in the Marvel Universe and clearly has the ability to impersonate someone else. Though Wanda Maximoff left her stranded in Westview at the end of WandaVision, it’s possible that Agatha has since escaped. It could also be she is attempting to access darker and stronger magic, as she did in Westview.

Agatha is definitely coming back to the MCU in her own streaming series, and it wouldn’t be unexpected to see her in Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness. If Doctor Strange isn’t himself, Agatha is a likely culprit.

Venom

It could be that Doctor Strange is simply Doctor Strange. There may be villains beyond what the trailers have shown, and one of the biggest could be Venom. At the end of Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Venom appears to be transported into the MCU through a strange phenomenon that is likely connected to the spell Strange casts in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Venom could end up being the ultimate villain of the movie, especially once he finds out that every other villain is destined to die at the hands of Spider-Man. Eddie Brock isn’t likely to appreciate that.

Mysterio

Magic may not be the art behind Doctor Strange. One thing fans should be looking out for is Mysterio, whose apparent death sparks Peter Parker’s effort to have Strange help him in the first place. It’s possible that Mysterio is alive and is using his highly advanced hologram technology to not only trick Spider-Man but the world.

It would not be out of the realm of possibility for the entire invasion of Spider-Man villains to be some colossal illusion on Mysterio’s part. Quentin Beck did begin his elaborate lie in Far From Home by saying he was from another Earth himself.

Mephisto

Comic book fans know Mephisto is one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe. MCU fans are likely burnt on any speculation about him after WandaVision, but they shouldn’t be. While unlikely, there is reason to suspect Mephisto in the magical quandary of the movie. Mephisto plays a huge role in a comic book storyline which appears to have influenced No Way Home.

In “One More Day,” Peter Parker makes a deal with Mephisto to trade the existence of his marriage to Mary Jane and memory of it for Aunt May’s life. This is virtually the same thing Peter is doing with Doctor Strange, leading some to speculate on Mephisto’s involvement.

Shuma-Gorath

Shuma-Gorath could be manipulating Doctor Strange from another universe. This ancient cosmic being is so powerful that he can mentally manipulate others across dimensions, and given the speculation about the villain’s appearance in Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, it’s possible that everything in No Way Home is all prelude.

Shuma-Gorath may have already appeared in the MCU. A tentacle monster resembling him has made a few appearances in What If…? and the creature could be free now, causing chaos through the multiverse in ways Doctor Strange is barely aware of.

Kang The Conqueror

The MCU has established a major villain connected to the multiverse in He Who Remains. The spell going wrong in Spider-Man: No Way Home could possibly be connected to the fracturing of the Sacred Timeline at the end of Loki. It could also be a product of temporal manipulations by the many powerful variants of Kang The Conqueror that He Who Remains teased.

Kang’s interference in the multiverse could be responsible in some way for Doctor Strange’s spell going sideways, and it could be Kang who emerges at the end as the ultimate villain threatening the entire MCU.

The Scarlet Witch

There is another powerful sorcerer with the power to alter reality and perceive other dimensions. At the end of WandaVision, the Scarlet Witch levels up considerably with the Darkhold. She also hears the voices of her children, likely from another universe. She could either be impersonating Doctor Strange or more likely, be interfering in the spell for her purposes.

The Scarlet Witch needs access to other universes, but may not have the power or ability to do it yet. Once Strange’s spell goes awry, the multiverse seems to flood into the world, allowing her to find her twin sons.
