Clueless is the 1990s retelling of Jane Austen’s Emma. It’s also a cinematic classic that is filled with teenage drama and hilarious one-liners that’ll have you “totally buggin.'” Everything about Amy Heckerling’s epic film still holds up after over two decades since its release and is still highly regarded as one of the best “chick flicks” of all time. It’s right up there with Mean Girls and Heathers, making it an instant classic.

Somehow, Clueless gets better and better with age, like a fine wine. So to honor the movie that blessed us with an abundance of ’90s slang terms, let’s look back at the 1o best quotes from the film.

10 “UGH, AS IF!”

“As if!” is one of the most iconic movie quotes of all time. It is a phrase that is so ’90s it hurts, and perhaps that’s why we love it so much. The vintage flair gives it a nice touch so if you’re feeling nostalgic towards the decade of crop tops, choker necklaces, and boy bands, you can use this phrase to indicate “in your dreams, buddy!”

It’s the perfect thing to say whenever a stranger at the bar gets a little too friendly. Any time a person gives you unwanted attention, you must bring out your inner Cher Horowitz and say “Ugh, As if!”

9 “OH MY GOD, I AM TOTALLY BUGGIN'”

Another epic ’90s quote. In 2019 translation, “I’m totally buggin'” means “I’m freaking out.” So any time you get overly stressed over your workload or romantic life, you just call up your BFF and tell them with complete seriousness that you’re “totally buggin.'”

Can we please bring this saying back? We love this phrase so much that we want it to be printed on all of the T-shirts (and we want to buy one, like, ASAP). That way we will end up looking like a “Total Betty” and we will no longer be “Ensembly Challenged.”

8 “YOU’RE A VIRGIN WHO CAN’T DRIVE”

Another classic Clueless quote said by the glorious Brittany Murphy (may she rest in peace). Tai says this to Cher after the two get into a heated argument over Paul Rudd’s character, Josh.

Later on in the film the two thankfully make amends, but Tai’s insult that was uttered all the way back in the ’90s still somehow burns. Amy Heckerling, writer and director of Clueless, created this line for Murphy’s character because it was personal to her own high school experience where she was a “virgin” who “couldn’t drive.” Plus, Murphy stated in an interview that at the time of filming, she was also a virgin who couldn’t drive. Who knew!

7 “SHE’S MY FRIEND BECAUSE WE BOTH KNOW WHAT IT’S LIKE FOR PEOPLE TO BE JEALOUS OF US”

Dionne and Cher are BFF Goals. Not only are they the most fashionable queens in all of Beverly Hills but they’re also caring individuals who bond over acts of kindness. They set their lonely teachers up together.

They give Tai a killer makeover. They are both named after famous singers from the past who now do infomercials. What more could you possibly ask for in a friendship?

6 “TOTAL BETTY”

Cher says, “Wasn’t my mom a total betty? She died when I was young – a freak accident during a routine liposuction.”

A “total betty” is another phrase that we desperately want to have printed on a t-shirt so we can wear it 24/7. The slang “betty” means “hottie” in 2019 speak, and Cher uses it whenever she thinks a woman is looking absolutely gorgeous. It’s another term that should definitely be brought back to 2019 and can be used as the perfect Insta-comment for your BFF’s latest selfie post. If she’s seen Clueless as frequently as we have, she’ll know exactly what you mean.

5 ROLLIN’ WITH THE HOMIES

Tai gets a minor concussion at a party and Elton helps the poor girl out by asking her if she can sing the words to the Coolio song while doing a swerving wave hand motion. Turns out, she can. Later on, when Tai ends up getting rejected by Elton, she cries as the song comes on at a restaurant because it instantly reminds her of her old “love.”

Now nobody can possibly listen to that tune without instantly being reminded of Clueless.

4 OKAY, OKAY, SO HE’S KIND OF A BALDWIN

Cher says this line when she’s contemplating her feelings for Josh. In 2019 speak, the slang term is meant to indicate a person who is as attractive as one of the Baldwin brothers. (Back in 1995, The Baldwins were total hunks).

It wouldn’t take us the entire length of the movie to realize that Paul Rudd is “kind of a Baldwin,” but in Claire’s defense, she is naturally clueless. When she finally realizes Josh is the one and they share a passionate kiss, it’s all just way too adorable to handle.

3 DO YOU PREFER FASHION VICTIM OR ENSEMBLY CHALLENGED?

Cher and Dionne are the ultimate fashion police and they believe the way you dress speaks volumes about your personality. Whether or not you agree, you can’t deny, they are experts at giving makeovers.

When they give their girl Tai a makeover, they make her go from “emsembly challenged” to a “total betty.” We have to admit though, even before the makeover, Tai was absolutely flawless (and Travis fully agrees with us).

2 “DO YOU LIKE BILLIE HOLIDAY?” “I LOVE HIM”

When Christian asks, “Do you like Billie Holiday?” Cher says, “I love him!” This is another hilarious example of Cher being “clueless.” Clearly, she has absolutely no idea who Billie Holiday is because she mistakes the famous singer for being a man when Holiday is most certainly a woman. As we can see, Cher will do anything to impress Christian. Why? Because he actually knows how to dress.

It takes a whole lot for Cher to be impressed by a high school boy, because according to Cher, “searching for a boy in high school is like searching for meaning in a Pauly Shore movie”. If she can find someone who impresses her, she’ll do anything to win their affection – including pretending to love Billie Holiday even though she’s never heard of her.

1 IT DOES NOT SAY R.S.V.P ON THE STATUE OF LIBERTY

Although most of the quotes in the previous slides were specifically catered towards the ’90s, this quote still holds up in 2019 and is more relevant than ever. Claire says this surprisingly insightful line while in debate class as she presents her stance to the class against Amber.
