Britain has produced many successful and celebrated television shows, with current Netflix hit Sex Education being a prime example. While many popular British shows are still airing, many longstanding favorites ending years ago.

Some popular British shows ran their course and were given huge season finales to see them out, while others have ended more openly, meaning they could easily make a return one day. Some of these completed British shows live on in the public consciousness, but others are undeservedly forgotten gems, with many of them certainly worth revisiting.

10 Skins

Skins focuses on outrageous and rebellious groups of teenagers who are studying for their A levels. It ran for seven seasons between 2007 and 2013. The show was known for pushing boundaries, often showing its young characters partying and doing scandalous and outrageous things.

The show provided a launching point for many upcoming young actors and many of the Skins cast have become highly successful after the show. The show was unique in that it changed its main cast every two series which was a risk that payed off for the most part. Skins is a British show that paved the way for many others and the complex character dynamics and outrageous storylines mean it’s definitely worth a re-watch, even all these years later.

9 Afterlife

Long before The Walking Dead, Andrew Lincoln starred in British TV series, Afterlife. In the series, which ran for two seasons between 2005 and 2006, Lincoln played a university lecturer who becomes involved with ghostly happenings surrounding a medium, Alison portrayed by Lesley Sharp.

This hidden gem can be both heartbreaking and genuinely frightening at times. Lincoln and Sharp both put in stellar performances throughout the show and their dynamic on-screen is pure gold. Robert’s reluctant journey from sceptic to believer and trusted confidant of Alison unfolds beautifully across the two seasons.

8 The End Of The F—ing World

The End of the F—ing World could have easily continued after its second season, but show bosses have ruled out a return for the show. The show focuses on James, who believes he’s a psychopath, and Alyssa, the girl he’s planning to kill.

Over the two seasons, the teens develop a peculiar yet captivating dynamic and encounter many other eccentric characters. The show has a dark and surreal tone; it feels like the real world but not quite which perfectly captures the essence of the original graphic novel it was based on. The End of the F—ing World is filled with dark comedy, awkward moments and shock twists that make it perfect show to rewatch again and again.

7 Sugar Rush

In the 2000s, LGBTQ+ characters were few and far between on mainstream television, so Sugar Rush was quite the revelation when it burst onto British screens back in 2005. The show focused on a teenage girl, Kim, who is a lesbian and in love with her apparently heterosexual best friend, Sugar.

The show was known for its mixture of colorful characters and wacky storylines, but the will-they-won’t-they relationship between Kim and Sugar was genuinely captivating to watch. Many of the hilarious side characters also make this show a joy to go back to. Sugar Rush was truly ahead of its time and paved the way for more diversity on the small screen.

6 Torchwood

Although Torchwood never officially ended, it’s been 10 years since the show last aired, so it seems unlikely that it will return. Torchwood is a spinoff of thr longrunning sci-fi show Doctor Who. While the parent show is geared toward families, Torchwood was aimed at a more adult audience with sexual themes and violence running throughout.

The third season told a single story airing over five consecutive nights, and it’s often considered one of Torchwood’s best ever stories, if not the franchise as a whole. Torchwood’s later time slot allowed it to explore much darker and hard-hitting themes than its parent show and opened up a whole new side of the Whoniverse. This spinoff is a must-watch for Doctor Who fans but can also be enjoyed by new audiences.

5 Broadchurch

Before current Doctor Who showrunner Chris Chibnall took charge of the sci-fi show, he was responsible for dark mystery-drama Broadchurch. The show’s connections to Doctor Who don’t end with Chris Chibnall either, as David Tennant, Jodie Whittaker and Arthur Darvill all star in both shows.

In tone, though, Broadchurch couldn’t be more different from Doctor Who. Each season focuses on a dark mystery within the fictional costal town of Broadchurch. Unlike other dramas within this genre, many of the characters recur across multiple seasons. The character development throughout the show is magnificent, and some of the plot developments are truly shocking and heartbreaking.

4 Merlin

Merlin, which ranran from 2008 to 2012, focuses on the origins of the legendary characters Merlin and Arthur, showing the adventures of the two as young men. Many famous actors appeared on Merlin, and the family show featured fun and magical moments that kept audiences coming back week after week.

Although it did have a tendency to lean toward monster-of-the-week plots, the characters and their relationships with each other truly made the show special. Merlin’s development from apprentice to powerful sorcerer, Arthur’s transition from prince to king, and Morgana’s descent into evil are particularly satisfying character arcs that span the show’s five seasons.

3 My Mad Fat Diary

My Mad Fat Diary is a teen comedy-drama that deals with themes such as body image and mental health, focusing mainly on Rae and her friends. The show also features many familiar faces, including Ian Hart (Professor Quirrell from Harry Potter) and Jodie Comer before her Killing Eve days.

The show ran for three seasons between 2013 and 2015, so it’s easy to binge. It also features a charming cast of characters. At the beginning of the show, Rae’s new friends seem like fairly one-dimensional teens, but as the story progresses they all become fully developed and complex characters. Also, the ’90s setting of the show makes this a nostalgia trip that is certainly worth a watch.

2 Being Human

The main premise of Being Human is: What would happen if a vampire, a werewolf and a ghost shared a house? The early seasons of the show focus on this strange dynamic between the three leads, but over time the plots become more complex, with Satan even being introduced as an antagonist later on.

The show was successful enough to spawn a U.S. remake, but there’s something uniquely gritty yet fun about the British show . By the time the show ended, it had replaced all of its three leads. The early seasons are stronger, but the whole show is still a fun ride nonetheless. Its world-building is excellent, with the rules of the ghost world and the afterlife being particularly genius. The main strength of Being Human is how it takes its supernatural themes and considers how these might impair the very real lives of its characters.

1 Misfits

Misfits is a comedy-drama that ran for five series between 2009 and 2013 and centers on a group of young people who develop superpowers while on community service. Misfits features many fantastic episodes with strange plots covering time travel, zombies, Nazis and even a man who uses his power to control cheese in order to murder.

The running joke of the gang killing their probation workers and the funny one-liners will leave viewers in hysterics. The show does have a similar problem to Being Human in that the early seasons are the best, with the entire main cast being replaced by the end of the show (and the new characters paling in comparison to the originals). That being said, the whole show is definitely worth a watch. When Misfits was at its best, it was one of the strongest British TV shows and perfectly combined the ridiculous with dark comedy and impressive character development.
